What Greenleaf and the Blue Tree Project did
PerthNow reported that Greenleaf Pharmacies turned its stores blue and set up message trees where customers and community members could write words of support. The report identified the Wanneroo and Herdsman pharmacies as long-standing community locations. Greenleaf managing director Anton Cetinic said the collaboration aimed to make people aware that someone nearby may be willing to talk. PerthNow’s October 10, 2024 report describes the activity and its context.
The Blue Tree Project uses painted blue trees as visible prompts to start conversations about mental health and encourage people to check in with themselves and others. Founder Kendall Whyte told PerthNow: “The Blue Tree Project’s mission is to use these trees to spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling their own mental health challenges.”
What the reported fundraising figures mean
The figures reported by PerthNow refer to specific past periods. They should not be read as the campaign’s current fundraising total.

Both amounts come from the same PerthNow report published October 10, 2024; it does not establish a current total.
How the Blue Tree Project began
According to the project’s About page, the idea traces back to 2014, when Jayden Whyte and a friend painted a dead tree blue on his family’s farm in Western Australia. Jayden died by suicide in 2018, and the Blue Tree Project says it began in 2019. The organisation describes its mission as sparking important conversations and encouraging people to speak up about mental health by reducing stigma.

The project’s trees give people a simple opening question: “Why is that tree blue?” The charity presents the question as a way to start a conversation, not as a substitute for professional support.
Ways to take part
Paint and register a tree
The Blue Tree Project’s painting guide recommends choosing a non-living tree, checking whether permission is required on council land, arranging supplies and helpers, and registering the finished tree. The project says it has an initiative with Wattyl to provide free blue paint in Australia and New Zealand; check its current website for request eligibility and availability rather than assuming paint is always available.

The project also describes fundraising and donations, volunteering, regional events, corporate sponsorship, Mental Health First Aid training and awareness sessions. Dates and availability can change, so check the charity’s About page and homepage for current details. Its homepage also identifies Wattyl as its official paint partner.

The Blue Tree Project says it is not a support service. Its Help Directory announcement, dated April 19, 2024, describes listings intended to help people navigate support options in Australia, including suicide prevention and crisis support, mental-health triage, and resources for groups such as regional and rural communities, Indigenous peoples, veterans, trauma survivors, survivors of violence and immigrants. Use the project’s current Help Directory to find options; do not treat the charity itself as crisis care.
