What GoFundMe’s gift-card pilot was reported to do
TechCrunch reported on November 4, 2025, that GoFundMe had introduced digital gift cards in a pilot and planned a broader launch after gathering feedback from consumers and nonprofits. Under the reported design, a recipient claims a card and its value goes into that person’s GoFundMe Giving Fund. The recipient can then recommend grants to eligible charitable organizations or leave the funds in the account for later giving. TechCrunch also reported that funds could grow through investment. TechCrunch’s November 4, 2025 report describes the pilot, not confirmed current product terms.
The report said pilot cards started at $5 and included seasonal and cause-themed designs, with examples such as birthdays, Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, animal lovers, cancer fighters, and nature protectors. Those are historical pilot details, not a verified current catalog or confirmation that cards are on sale today.
How a Giving Fund gift differs from a regular gift card
A conventional retail gift card generally gives its recipient purchasing power with the issuing merchant. A GoFundMe Giving Fund contribution instead supports charitable grantmaking. The Giving Fund is an independent 501(c)(3) public charity and donor-advised fund sponsor; it receives, holds, invests, and distributes contributions under its rules. The account holder can recommend grants to eligible charities, but does not retain legal custody or control of the contributed money. The formal guidelines set a $5 minimum for contributions made by credit card or ACH. That is a current Giving Fund contribution rule; it does not establish the complete terms or minimum denomination of a gift card.

What buyers and recipients should check before relying on the offer
- Availability: The sources reviewed do not confirm a public launch. GoFundMe’s newsroom index includes announcements through August 2026, but does not establish that these gift cards are currently available. This is not proof that sales never began; check GoFundMe’s live product information for current availability and terms.
- Irrevocability: Once a contribution reaches the Giving Fund, it cannot be refunded or withdrawn. Do not treat the gift as a cash equivalent or assume the recipient can redirect it to a personal fundraiser.
- Fees: The FAQ says there is no administrative fee to maintain an account, but applicable processing or investment fees and optional tips may apply as disclosed. The guidelines reserve the Board’s ability to change the no-administrative-fee policy with notice.
- Tax treatment: TechCrunch reported that the purchaser receives a tax deduction, while GoFundMe’s current materials discuss tax deductions generally for contributions to the Giving Fund. That does not establish how a particular gift-card transaction will be treated for every buyer. Consult a tax professional about individual eligibility and timing.
- Eligibility: Grant recommendations are limited to eligible charitable organizations under the Giving Fund’s rules. Confirm an intended recipient qualifies before giving if supporting a particular organization is important.
