How George Soros Became a Self-Made Billionaire

George Soros’s fortune came primarily from decades of investment management—not one famous trade. Here’s how his career and 1992 pound bet fit into the story.

George Soros built his fortune primarily by managing investments and investing in financial markets over several decades. His 1992 bet against the British pound brought him worldwide attention, but it was one celebrated episode in a much longer career—not the sole source of his wealth.

How Soros got from Budapest to finance

Soros was born in Budapest and survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary. He emigrated to England in 1947 and studied at the London School of Economics. While there, he worked jobs including railway porter and restaurant waiter; PBS reports that he graduated in 1952. He moved to the United States in 1956 and entered the financial industry, according to the Open Society Foundations biography and PBS.

He built an investment-management business

The foundation biography says Soros launched his own hedge fund in 1970. Other accounts describe a later milestone: Biography.com says the Soros Fund was established in 1973 with $12 million from investors and was soon renamed the Quantum Fund; PBS describes a private investment firm formed in 1973 that evolved into Quantum. These dates refer to different accounts of the business’s early development, rather than establishing one uncontested legal founding date.

The important point for his wealth is the business model: Soros managed investment capital and sought returns in financial markets. Over decades, investment activity—not a single trade—was the central engine of his fortune. Bloomberg reports that in 2011 he returned outside investors’ money and converted the fund into a family office, shifting the structure toward managing family wealth rather than outside capital.

Why the 1992 pound trade became famous

In September 1992, during the United Kingdom’s crisis in the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM), Soros’s fund took a large short position against sterling. A short position is a bet that an asset’s value will fall; it is not itself a measure of profit.

Figure What it refers to Source
$10 billion Reported size of the short position against the pound—not the profit Bloomberg
About $1 billion Profit Soros reportedly made from the trade; it should not be treated as a verified amount personally retained Forbes

The distinction matters: the larger figure describes the scale of the position, while the smaller figure is a reported profit estimate. The trade became known as the episode that “broke the Bank of England,” but it unfolded amid broader market pressure and government policy decisions. Soros himself acknowledged the label in a PBS NOW interview with David Brancaccio: “I’ve been called as a man who broke the Bank of England when I attacked the sterling.” That description captures the trade’s reputation, not proof that Soros alone caused the ERM crisis.

His fortune also supported large-scale philanthropy

Soros began giving in 1979, according to the Open Society Foundations. The organization says that he has given it more than $32 billion from his financial-market fortune. That is the foundation’s cumulative reported giving figure, not a measure of his remaining wealth. His philanthropy grew alongside his investment career and became a major use of the wealth it generated.

Soros has described financial success as giving him unusual independence to take positions on controversial issues. In a Forbes profile, he said: “I occupy an exceptional position. My success in the financial markets has given me a greater degree of independence than most other people. This allows me to take a stand on controversial issues: in fact it obliges me to do so.”

What the public figures do—and do not—show

The commonly cited billion-dollar estimate helps explain why the pound trade is so closely associated with Soros, but it does not establish how much of his lifetime fortune came from that episode. The cited accounts do not provide a definitive allocation of his total wealth to the trade or a single audited lifetime return for Quantum Fund. The more supportable account is that he accumulated wealth through decades of investment management and market activity, with the 1992 sterling position as a particularly prominent success.
