Google One passed 150 million subscribers in May 2025, up from 100 million in February 2024. Google credited its AI Premium plan with attracting “millions” of subscriptions, but the milestone counts Google One as a whole—not 150 million paid Gemini users. The growth shows how Google used an established storage bundle to sell AI alongside services customers already use.
What the 150 million milestone means
Google disclosed the milestone to Reuters in May 2025. Compared with the 100 million subscriptions it reported in February 2024, the total rose by about 50 million, or 50%, in roughly 15 months. These are reported subscription figures; Google did not publish a detailed methodology defining whether they represent unique people, account holders, or another measure.
Google One is a consumer subscription built around storage for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Plans can also include family sharing and other Google benefits. Some higher tiers add premium AI features. As Reuters noted, lower-priced storage plans did not include most of those AI capabilities.
How Gemini entered the bundle
The 2024 AI Premium plan
In February 2024, Google introduced Google One AI Premium at a U.S. list price of $19.99 per month. It paired 2 TB of storage with Gemini Advanced and Gemini features in Google applications such as Gmail and Docs. That price describes the plan when it was introduced; it is not an estimate of what the average Google One subscriber paid.

Google vice president Shimrit Ben-Yair said the AI tier had attracted “millions” of subscriptions. That is evidence that the offer drew meaningful demand, but Google did not say how many of the 150 million subscribers were on an AI plan or how much of the overall growth came from it.
Why storage and AI can reinforce each other
Storage gives the subscription a practical purpose even when a customer is not using Gemini. AI can make the bundle feel more valuable by adding assistance in familiar tools, while the existing Google account and billing relationship give the company a way to market upgrades to current customers. For someone who already pays for Google storage, the decision may feel less like buying a chatbot from scratch and more like adding capabilities to a service they already use.

This bundling is also strategically distinct from advertising. A paid plan gives Google a direct consumer subscription relationship, complementing its advertising business. Reuters framed the effort as part of Alphabet’s push to diversify revenue as it competes in AI assistants.
What Google One’s growth does—and does not—prove
What the figures support
- Google One grew substantially between February 2024 and May 2025.
- Google’s AI tier attracted millions of subscriptions, according to the executive overseeing Google One.
- Bundling AI with storage and Google app features offers a route to paid consumer AI that does not depend on a standalone chatbot subscription.
What remains unknown
- The number or share of Google One subscribers paying for Gemini features.
- Whether Gemini accounted for most of the roughly 50 million increase.
- Revenue per subscriber, AI-plan revenue as a share of Google One revenue, or profitability after AI computing costs.
- Whether customers would have paid for Gemini without storage and other bundled services.
Subscriber growth is therefore a measure of scale, not a direct measure of revenue or profit. Plan mix, monthly versus annual billing, regional prices, promotions, family-plan behavior, and cancellations can all affect the economics. Other drivers—including demand for storage for photos, video, Gmail, and Drive—may also have contributed to growth.
How the plans have changed since the milestone
The 2025 milestone belongs to the era of the AI Premium name. Google’s consumer offerings have since been reorganized into Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro, and Google AI Ultra. The current U.S. Google One page lists AI Pro at $19.99 per month with 5 TB of storage; Google’s AI plan page lists 400 GB for AI Plus and says AI Ultra starts with 20 TB. These are later plan details, not the configuration behind the 2025 subscriber milestone. Benefits and availability vary by plan and location, so consult Google’s current Google One plans and Google AI plan details for the applicable offer.

The more important business signal is that Google can attach AI to an existing paid relationship rather than asking every customer to adopt a separate product. Storage supplies an ongoing utility; Gemini provides a reason to upgrade or stay. That approach may lower the friction of trying paid AI, especially for customers who already rely on Gmail, Docs, Drive, or Photos.

It also makes the headline number easy to misread. A later Alphabet earnings-call account referred to 350 million paid subscriptions across consumer services, led by Google One and YouTube. That is a combined portfolio figure, not a new Google One count and not a Gemini subscriber total. The broader figure indicates the importance of subscriptions to Google’s consumer strategy, but does not reveal the economics of any one AI plan.
For investors and customers alike, the useful indicators to watch are AI-plan adoption, revenue mix, retention, and the cost of delivering AI—not the total Google One subscriber number alone. Google’s May 2025 disclosure showed that Gemini could help strengthen an established bundle; it did not show that AI by itself drove every new subscription or that the AI offer was profitable.
