GE Aerospace is responding to a growing company backlog with investment in U.S. engine manufacturing, supplier capacity, durable parts and global maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Its backlog reached roughly $190 billion at the end of 2025 and exceeded $210 billion in its second-quarter 2026 reporting. Those figures measure GE’s equipment and services backlog—not total worldwide demand for jet engines—and investment plans do not translate into deliveries overnight.

What GE’s backlog says about demand

GE Aerospace reported that its backlog grew by nearly $20 billion to roughly $190 billion in 2025, describing demand for its engines and services as robust. In its second-quarter 2026 release, the company said its backlog was over $210 billion. GE’s results releases report a company backlog of equipment and services, not a count of engines or a measure of the entire global market.

Program-level figures offer a separate view. CFM International, the GE-Safran joint venture behind LEAP engines, had more than 12,900 cumulative net orders and commitments at year-end 2025, according to Safran’s 2025 operations and 2026 outlook presentation. That figure covers LEAP applications for the Airbus A320neo family, Boeing 737 MAX and COMAC C919; it is not GE Aerospace’s own backlog.

GE has also cited large widebody orders. Its 2026 proxy statement identifies an agreement with Qatar Airways for more than 400 GEnx and GE9X engines as its largest widebody engine order. At the 2025 Dubai Airshow, GE reported more than 500 engine wins, including Riyadh Air commitments for 120 LEAP-1A engines and flydubai commitments for 60 GEnx engines. These order announcements indicate demand for particular programs, not a global industry forecast.

How GE is expanding engine manufacturing

GE Aerospace says it plans to invest $1 billion in U.S. manufacturing in 2026. The stated aims are to increase engine deliveries, scale durable-parts production and support suppliers. The company says hundreds of millions of dollars will go to sites manufacturing and assembling commercial engines, particularly narrowbody CFM LEAP engines, as well as spare parts intended to help reduce MRO turnaround times. GE’s manufacturing investment announcement describes a plan; it does not establish how much additional output has already been achieved.

One site-level example is GE’s Research Triangle Park facility in North Carolina. Axios reported in March 2026 that planned upgrades worth $20 million would include more assembly room for the GE9X. That project illustrates a specific facility investment, not the scale of GE’s company-wide production increase. Axios reported on the North Carolina investment.

How GE is increasing repair and service capacity

New engines are only one part of the response: the installed fleet also needs inspections, repairs and replacement parts. GE reported more than $1 billion invested across its global MRO network in 2025, including a half-billion-dollar investment for LEAP capacity in Brazil, Malaysia, Dubai, Dallas and other sites. Its year-end results also describe an expanded external MRO network. The investment across GE’s own network and the addition of third-party shops are distinct forms of capacity, and should not be conflated. GE’s full-year 2025 results provide the company’s account.

GE’s 2025 annual report describes its teams at Celma, Brazil, servicing CFM56, LEAP, GEnx and CF6 engine lines. For broader production and service flow, GE says it works with suppliers through its FLIGHT DECK operating system to analyze production, improve processes and unlock capacity. These steps address how engines and parts move through the system; the annual report does not quantify a single company-wide increase in output or a specific reduction in turnaround time.

Making engines last longer can ease service pressure

More durable components can reduce the frequency or extent of some maintenance work, complementing added shop capacity. GE’s annual report says that by the end of 2025 its reverse bleed system had been installed in 50% of LEAP-1A engines in service, and nearly 1,500 LEAP-1A durability kits had shipped since certification. Those figures apply to the LEAP-1A fleet and this specific durability initiative; they should not be generalized to every LEAP variant or engine family. GE’s 2025 annual report provides the reported figures.

Why backlog does not become capacity immediately

Manufacturing and service expansion depend on a supply chain that can provide materials, skilled labor and production capacity on time—and meet aerospace safety, quality and performance requirements. GE’s 2025 Form 10-K says these inputs are necessary for both new-engine deliveries and servicing. It also notes that demand for GE equipment and services tends to track commercial air travel, freight activity and government defense funding, so a backlog is not a guarantee of a fixed future delivery pace. GE’s SEC filings describe these operating dependencies.

Expansion also carries costs. In its second-quarter 2026 results, GE attributed some margin pressure to growth in installed engines, including the GE9X, as well as investment and inflation. That is a reminder that added production and service capability requires spending and execution; announced investment alone does not show that output or turnaround times have already improved.
