How Flight Price Alerts Work—and When Airfares Are Most Likely to Change

Flight alerts can flag fare changes, but they do not lock in a ticket. Learn how tracking works, what past fare patterns suggest and how to judge whether to wait or book.

Flight price alerts track a route, selected dates or a specific itinerary and notify you when the service detects a relevant fare change. They can help you decide when to recheck a price, but they do not hold a seat or guarantee that the fare will still be available when you book.

What a flight price alert actually tracks

The tracking scope determines which price changes you hear about. Google Flights lets you track a route for chosen dates, flexible dates using “Any dates,” or a specific flight itinerary. If exact flights matter, tracking that itinerary is more targeted than tracking a broad route. Expedia also offers flight alerts to signed-in users when its system has enough route data matching the search.

An alert is a notification generated by the service, not a reservation or ticket. Fares can change while you are deciding, and availability is confirmed only when the booking is completed. Neither Google nor Expedia publishes a universal polling interval, exact notification delay or numerical threshold for a “significant” change, so do not assume an alert will arrive instantly or after a specific percentage drop. Google’s flight-tracking help and Expedia’s price-tracking page describe their respective features and limits.

How to set up useful tracking

  1. Choose a route and dates. In Google Flights, search the origin, destination and dates, then turn on price tracking. For an exact itinerary, select the flights and track that itinerary instead.
  2. Widen the search if your schedule is flexible. Use “Any dates,” the date grid or the price graph to compare alternatives. Google says “Any dates” tracking can email you when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month; if it does not, it sends regular emails with the best available flight prices.
  3. Recheck the live itinerary when an alert arrives. Open the current result and confirm the dates, airports, stops, times and fare class before deciding. The notification is a reason to look again, not proof that a particular fare remains bookable.
  4. Compare the total cost, not just the headline fare. Check baggage, seat selection and other charges that matter to your trip. Expedia notes that its price-history graph is based on the lowest fare matching the search criteria and filters, and generally excludes paid add-ons such as checked bags and seats unless the search criteria account for them. Its lowest automatically sorted results are often basic economy; apply the fare-class filter before setting an alert if you want to compare a different product.

Google says it may also alert users when a tracked route is likely to get more expensive or when a current fare is close to expiring and the replacement is likely to cost more. Expedia delivers alerts as push notifications when relevant price changes occur; a quiet period can mean the price was stable or that a change did not meet its alert criteria.

When fares have tended to be lower—and why the dates are not rules

Historical booking windows can help frame a decision, but they are not a calendar that predicts every trip. In an August 31, 2022 analysis, Google examined average round-trip fares observed from August 1, 2017 through August 1, 2022 for 6–9-day and 13–16-day trips departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. Holiday analyses used trips spanning the holiday. The findings describe those U.S. market data, not all routes worldwide. Google’s 2022 analysis reported these patterns:

Trip type or choice Historical pattern reported by Google
Domestic U.S. fares Usually lowest 21–60 days before departure, with an average low 44 days out.
Domestic Thanksgiving Usually lowest 36–74 days before departure, reaching a low 52 days out.
Domestic Christmas In the 2022 analysis, lowest on average 22 days before departure; lower-price periods spanned 20–88 days before departure.
U.S. to Europe Usually lowest 129 days before departure, with lower prices across a 50–179-day window.
U.S. to Mexico or the Caribbean Lowest on average 59 days before departure, within a 37–87-day window.
Departure day Monday–Wednesday departures averaged 12% cheaper than weekend departures (20% when international destinations were excluded).
Nonstop versus connecting Nonstop fares averaged 20% more than fares with stops.
Day of purchase Buying Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday rather than Saturday or Sunday was only 1.9% cheaper on average.

Later Google figures show why those booking windows should not be treated as timeless. For data it described as covering August 2018–December 2019 and January 2021–July 2023, its 2023 analysis found U.S. Christmas fares averaged their low 71 days before departure, commonly in a 54–78-day window; its 2022 post had found a 22-day average low. For U.S.-to-Europe trips, the later analysis reported average prices lowest 72 or more days before departure. Google’s 2023 analysis provides the later figures.

For practical planning, use route- and date-specific context where it is available rather than applying one of these averages to every itinerary. Google says its “cheapest time to book” insights appear when it has enough historical data and are tailored to the origin, destination and selected dates. Its price tips can also show historical low, typical or high prices, while date comparisons, flexible-date graphs and alternative-airport options can reveal trade-offs. Google cautions that price predictions use historical trends and future fares may not behave as expected. Google’s 2024 guidance explains these booking insights and comparison tools.

Should you wait for a fare to drop?

Waiting is a calculated choice, not a guarantee of savings. It may make sense when your dates are flexible, route-specific information suggests room for lower fares and you are comfortable with the possibility that prices rise instead. Booking sooner can be reasonable when plans are fixed and the current fare is acceptable to you. Google’s “prices unlikely to drop” and “prices likely to increase” signals can inform that decision, but Google says future prices may not follow the prediction. Expedia likewise warns that predictions are not fully accurate in a rapidly changing global market and that a fare is not guaranteed until ticketing is complete. Google and Expedia both describe these limitations.

Srubambi Battery Operated Small Alarm Clock: Compact Cordless Design
  • Battery Powered Clock For Rooms Without Outlets: End hunting for outlets or stretching power strips across small rooms. If you want a small clock that simply stays on by your bed or on a shelf without a plug, this battery-operated clock is for you. It runs on 4×AA batteries(not included) and keeps the display lit so the time stays visible even where outlets are scarce.
  • Compact Cordless Design For Small Spaces: Compact and lightweight, this clock fits on small nightstands, shelves, bathroom counters, or kitchen corners without crowding the space. The cordless design keeps surfaces tidy, and it’s easy to move between rooms or slip into a bag for hotels, offices, or dorm rooms. (Size: 2.32 × 4.88 × 1.22 in; Weight: 0.23 lb.)
  • Energy Saving Circuit With Auto Dimming: The LED display and low-power circuit are built for stable around-the-clock use, not just a brief flash and then darkness. The energy-saving design helps 4×AA batteries last longer than many always-lit clocks, so you replace them less often. An ambient light sensor and 3 brightness levels keep the screen comfortable as the room gets darker, without harsh glare at night.
  • Clear Digital Display Easy To Read: You shouldn’t have to lean in or squint just to check the time. Clear, high-contrast digits are easy to read from typical bedside or across-the-room distances while you’re lying in bed, cooking, or working. They stay visible in bright daytime light and in softly lit rooms—clearly readable from up to 5 meters in daylight—so a quick glance is enough.
  • Always Visible Time Brings Peace Of Mind: This is not just another little screen that lights up for a few seconds. It’s a quiet, steady presence in the room: the time is there whenever you glance up, whether you wake at night or rush through busy mornings. Seeing the time at a glance brings comfort and a sense of control to daily routines without reaching for a phone or relying on a TV box clock.

Does booking on Tuesday get you a cheaper flight?

Not as a dependable rule. In Google’s 2022 historical U.S.-market analysis, buying on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday rather than Saturday or Sunday was only 1.9% cheaper on average. That modest average difference does not establish a best purchase day for a particular route or fare. Google’s James Byers put it plainly: “There isn’t much value in purchasing your tickets on a certain day of the week — sorry, Tuesday!” It can be more useful to compare travel dates, departure days, stops, nearby airports and fare types than to wait for a particular weekday to buy.

Use alerts as one part of the fare decision

  • Track a broad route when your dates are open; track a selected itinerary when the exact flights matter.
  • Use flexible-date comparisons to see whether shifting the trip changes the options or price.
  • When a notification comes in, reopen the result and verify the live fare and complete itinerary.
  • Compare like with like, including fare class and relevant baggage or seat costs.
  • Treat historical averages and forecasts as context for a decision, not a promise about what your fare will do.

Google also notes that booking-link rankings can change dynamically. Review the booking option and itinerary details rather than choosing solely by the lowest displayed headline price. Google Flights help explains its tracking and search features.
