Larry Ellison did not receive $100 billion in cash on September 10, 2025. Oracle’s stock surged after the company announced quarterly results and an ambitious cloud-infrastructure outlook, rapidly increasing the estimated market value of the Oracle shares he already owned. Reports put the one-day increase in his estimated wealth at different levels—from $89 billion to about $100 billion or $101 billion—depending on the wealth tracker and when it measured the move.
Why Ellison’s estimated wealth jumped
Ellison’s fortune is heavily tied to Oracle because he owns about 40% of the company, according to the Associated Press. When Oracle shares rose sharply, wealth trackers marked his holding at the higher market price. That can produce a huge change in estimated net worth without the owner selling a single share. The estimate is not cash in a bank account; turning shares into cash would require selling them, or borrowing against them.
The move followed Oracle’s September 9, 2025, announcement of its fiscal 2026 first-quarter results. The next morning, Oracle shares rose by more than a third in early trading. The Associated Press estimated that the surge added about $100 billion to Ellison’s net worth in little over half an hour after the market opened. Bloomberg Law’s headline put the gain at $89 billion, while other contemporaneous coverage used figures around $100 billion or $101 billion. These are time-sensitive estimates, not interchangeable records of a cash transaction. (Associated Press; Bloomberg Law; Forbes)
Oracle’s shares gave back part of their gain later in the day. Ellison briefly moved ahead of Elon Musk in Bloomberg’s wealth ranking, but Musk was ahead again by the close. The ranking reflected changing estimates of two fortunes, not a lasting transfer of money from one person to another. (Bloomberg Billionaires Index)

What investors saw in Oracle’s results
Oracle reported $14.9 billion in total revenue for the quarter, up 12% in U.S. dollars year over year. Cloud revenue was $7.2 billion, up 28%, while cloud infrastructure revenue was $3.3 billion, up 55%. The most striking forward-looking number was remaining performance obligations (RPO): $455 billion, up 359% year over year. RPO represents contracted work that has not yet been recognized as revenue; it is not cash already earned or a promise that every contract will convert on schedule.
The quarter’s earnings measures were mixed. Oracle reported GAAP earnings per share of $1.01, down 2% year over year, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.47, up 6%. Axios reported that FactSet’s consensus estimates were $15 billion in revenue and $1.48 in non-GAAP earnings per share, putting Oracle slightly below those estimates on both measures. The market reaction therefore was not simply a response to a headline quarterly beat: investors appeared focused on the scale of contracted demand and the prospect of faster future cloud growth. Backlog and forecasts are not realized sales
Oracle CEO Safra Catz said the company signed four multibillion-dollar contracts with three customers during the quarter. The release also laid out management’s infrastructure-revenue expectations: $18 billion in FY2026, then $32 billion, $73 billion, $114 billion and $144 billion over the next four years. Those are forecasts, not reported revenue. Oracle’s release describes projections as expectations and includes forward-looking-statement qualifications; actual results can differ.
Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison said in the release, “MultiCloud database revenue from Amazon, Google and Microsoft grew at the incredible rate of 1,529% in Q1.” That is Oracle’s reported growth figure and Ellison’s characterization of it, not an independent evaluation of future performance.

Where financial engineering fits—and where it does not
Buybacks can change the ownership math over time
When a company buys back and retires shares, continuing shareholders can own a larger percentage of the company even if they do not buy additional shares. Repurchases also return capital to shareholders and can affect per-share measures. Forbes reported that Oracle had repurchased $142 billion of its shares since 2011, a long-term feature of the company’s capital-return history that helps explain the context around a large continuing stake.
That history does not establish that buybacks caused the September 10 rally. Oracle’s release recorded $95 million in common-stock repurchase payments in the Q1 FY2026 quarter, compared with $150 million in the year-earlier quarter. The sharp price move followed Oracle’s results and outlook. Available reporting does not establish a precise repurchase count across every relevant period or independently quantify how much buybacks changed Ellison’s ownership percentage. (Forbes; Oracle)

Market expectations can move prices before revenue arrives
A large backlog and management’s growth plans can lead investors to reassess what a company may be worth before the associated work appears as recognized revenue. That repricing can sharply lift the value assigned to a major shareholder’s stake. But the share-price response is the market’s changing expectation, not proof that forecasts will be met. Deutsche Bank analyst Brad Zelnick captured the surprise on Oracle’s earnings call: “We’re all kind of in shock in a very, very good way.”

The headline describes a mark-to-market change: an estimate based on the quoted price of a large shareholding. It does not mean Ellison was paid that amount, that Oracle distributed it, or that the full value could be realized immediately without consequences. A concentrated stock position can make a person’s estimated net worth rise or fall dramatically with one company’s share price. The same concentration that magnifies a rally also magnifies a decline.
