That timing matters: an opening balance, a contribution credited during the year, and a withdrawal do not all earn interest for the same number of months. A later passbook entry does not, by itself, mean you lost interest earned for the year.
How is EPF interest calculated?
Paragraph 60 of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 1952 provides for interest on monthly running balances, with the account credit made annually. The Central Government determines the interest rate in consultation with the Central Board. In practical terms, the calculation follows when money is in the account during the year; it is not simply the year’s rate multiplied by the entire balance visible at year-end.

The scheme’s annual calculation accounts separately for the amount carried into the year, money withdrawn during it, and amounts credited after the previous year-end. The eligible months differ for each component. This is why two members with the same year-end balance can have different interest amounts if their contribution or withdrawal timing differed.
Opening balance
The amount standing to your credit on the last day of the preceding year, after adjustment for sums withdrawn during the current year, receives twelve months of interest for the current year. This is the full-year component of the calculation.

Contributions credited during the year
A sum credited after the preceding year-end begins earning interest from the first day of the month after the month in which it was credited. It earns through the end of the current year. For example, a contribution credited in April starts its interest period on May 1, not on the day it was credited in April. If credited in December, its period begins in January of the following year, so it does not earn interest for the current year under this rule.
This makes the credit month—not simply the month a payment was due or expected—important when you are interpreting the calculation. The scheme rule refers to sums credited to the account. If you are checking a particular entry, compare the credited amount and its month in your passbook with the interest period that follows; do not assume that a contribution receives interest for the month in which it is credited.
Withdrawals during the year
A sum withdrawn during the current year earns interest from the start of that year through the last day of the month before the withdrawal month. For a withdrawal in September, the eligible period for the withdrawn sum runs through August. The withdrawal month itself is not included in that component’s interest period.

Monthly timing changes the number of eligible months. The following examples show the interest period, not a guaranteed rupee amount; the applicable annual rate is needed to calculate the money due.
| Account item | When it is credited or withdrawn | Interest period for that item under the ordinary annual calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Opening balance (adjusted for current-year withdrawals) | Already in the account at the preceding year-end | Twelve months |
| New contribution | Credited in April | May through December: eight months |
| New contribution | Credited in December | Begins the following January; no eligible months remain in December |
| Withdrawn sum | Withdrawn in September | January through August: eight months |
To make the month effect concrete, suppose ₹12,000 is credited in April. Its interest period for that year is eight months, May through December. If the applicable annual rate is represented by r, its time-weighted contribution to the year’s interest is based on ₹12,000 for 8/12 of the year at r. This is an illustration of the eligible period, not a statement of the current EPF rate or a substitute for the account’s official calculation.

Likewise, if ₹12,000 is withdrawn in September, that withdrawn sum’s eligible period ends on August 31. A withdrawal earlier in the year has fewer eligible months than one later in the year. The same principle applies across the balance components: the calculation reflects when funds were present, not just the final balance.
These examples are useful for understanding the timing rules, but they are not a complete account statement. To estimate an actual year’s interest, you would need the relevant official rate and the account’s monthly credits, withdrawals, and opening amount. A year-end balance alone does not reveal how long each amount remained in the account.

When is EPF interest credited to my account?
The scheme describes interest as credited with effect from the last day in each year. This is the annual crediting step, distinct from the monthly running-balance method used to determine how much interest is due. Annual crediting does not mean that each month’s contribution receives a full year’s interest, nor does it mean that interest is calculated only once on the final balance.
The scheme also requires the total interest to be rounded to the nearest whole rupee. A fraction of 50 paise or more is rounded up to the next rupee; a smaller fraction is rounded down. The rounding rule applies to the total interest amount, not independently to each month’s contribution in the examples above.
Why is EPF interest not showing in my passbook?
An interest entry may appear in the passbook later than the year to which it relates. In its response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 630156/2023, EPFO stated: “Updating of member passbook with interest is an entry process only, the date on which the interest is entered in the passbook of the member has no actual financial bearing as the interest earned for the year. His monthly running balances is always added to the closing balance of that year.”

In other words, EPFO described the later passbook posting as an entry process and said its posting date does not itself change the interest earned for that year. The response does not establish a current processing schedule or promise when an entry will appear. Check your own record through EPFO’s official Member Passbook and Claim Status portal, and use official EPFO channels if your account has a specific discrepancy.

What rate applies, and what if an account is inoperative?
Paragraph 60 makes the Central Government, in consultation with the Central Board, responsible for determining the rate. The scheme text establishes who determines it; it is not a reliable basis for assuming a particular rate applies to the current financial year. Do not carry forward a rate from an old table or article. For an exact rate, check the official notification for the financial year in question before estimating interest.
The scheme also says interest is not credited from the date an account becomes inoperative under paragraph 72(6). The rule is relevant to account status, but the provision alone does not establish every criterion or exception for determining whether a particular account is inoperative. If this may apply to your account, verify the current scheme text and official EPFO guidance rather than inferring status from inactivity alone.

How final refund claims differ from ordinary withdrawals
The ordinary running-balance description above concerns sums withdrawn during a year. Paragraph 60 has a separate rule for final refund claims: interest is payable up to the end of the month before final payment is authorized. It also provides that if a claim is authorized on or after the 25th of a month, interest through that current month is paid along with the payment after month-end. This authorization-date rule is specific to final claims; it should not be used to recalculate every ordinary withdrawal.
A practical way to interpret the calculation
- Start with the amount carried forward from the preceding year and account for any sums withdrawn during the current year.
- For each current-year credit, identify its credit month; its eligible period begins on the first day of the next month.
- For each current-year withdrawal, identify its withdrawal month; the withdrawn amount’s ordinary interest period ends on the last day of the prior month.
- Apply the rate officially determined for the relevant financial year, then account for the scheme’s whole-rupee rounding rule.
- Distinguish the year in which interest was earned from the date a passbook entry was posted.
This gives you a framework for understanding why timing affects the amount and for checking whether a passbook entry appears to relate to the right period. The official passbook and EPFO account-specific guidance remain the appropriate sources for your own recorded figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is EPF interest calculated?
Paragraph 60 of the Employees’ Provident Funds Scheme, 1952 provides for interest on monthly running balances and an annual account credit. The opening balance, amounts credited during the year, and sums withdrawn during the year have different eligible interest periods. The Central Government determines the rate in consultation with the Central Board.
Do my contributions earn interest in the same month?
Under the ordinary annual calculation, a sum credited after the preceding year-end starts earning interest from the first day of the following month. For example, a sum credited in April starts its period on May 1. The rule is based on when the sum is credited to the account.

Does a late EPF interest entry mean I lost interest?
Not by itself. In its response to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question 630156/2023, EPFO said the passbook update is an entry process and that the entry date has no actual financial bearing on the interest earned for the year. The response does not promise a particular posting date. Check your passbook on the official EPFO portal and contact EPFO through official channels about account-specific concerns.
How does a withdrawal affect EPF interest?
For an ordinary current-year withdrawal, the withdrawn sum’s interest period runs from the start of the year through the last day of the month before the withdrawal month. A final refund claim has a separate authorization-date rule under paragraph 60, so it should not be treated as an ordinary withdrawal.
What EPF interest rate should I use?
Use the official rate determined for the relevant financial year. Paragraph 60 says the Central Government determines the rate in consultation with the Central Board; an old rate table does not establish the rate for a later year. Check the dated official notification before estimating.
The Bottom Line
EPF interest follows monthly running balances but is credited annually. The month a sum is credited or withdrawn affects its eligible interest period, and a later passbook entry does not by itself mean the year’s interest was lost. Check your account through EPFO’s official passbook portal and use the official rate for the relevant financial year.
