A salary change changes the wage amount used to find the schedule row; it does not automatically change your contribution-rate category. Your age and EPF membership category matter too, and a backdated increment is counted in the month the arrears are paid.
What changes when your salary changes?
For each wage month, the employer uses the wages due for that month and applies the Third Schedule that covers it. When salary rises or falls, the wage amount may move into a different schedule row or across a threshold that changes the employer rate. Your employee rate is determined by your applicable category, not simply by whether your pay went up or down.

That distinction matters because the schedule is not always the same as multiplying salary by a headline percentage. For monthly wages up to RM20,000, KWSP directs employers to use the schedule table. The table gives the contributions for the relevant wage band and category. If a contribution calculation includes cents, the amount is rounded up to the next ringgit. For wages above RM20,000, the schedule specifies calculation using the stated percentage of monthly wages, followed by rounding up the total contribution to the next ringgit. Check the current KWSP Third Schedule rather than estimating an amount from a general rate.

Which contribution rates apply?
The rates below summarize the categories relevant to salary-change calculations. The schedule and KWSP eligibility guidance control the actual contribution amount; these percentages do not replace the schedule where it must be used.

KWSP’s contribution eligibility and rates page explains the categories. Do not assume two employees on the same salary have the same contribution: age, citizenship or member category, and in some cases the date of an earlier election or registration can change the applicable row.
How to work out the effect of a normal salary change
- Identify the wage month. Determine which month the wages are due for, then use the Third Schedule effective for that month. A payment date alone does not tell you which schedule applies; for arrears, see the separate rule below.
- Confirm the member category. Check the employee’s age and citizenship or EPF membership category, including any relevant historic election or registration date. Do not select a row solely from the salary amount.
- Establish the monthly wages for that month. Use the wages due for the relevant month. If the month contains a salary revision, determine whether it is a normal month at the new salary or includes additional arrears paid later.
- Check the thresholds. Note whether wages are at or below RM5,000 or above it, and whether they are at or below RM20,000 or above it. The first threshold changes the employer-rate category for the common under-60 category; the second affects whether to use the table or the stated percentage method.
- Read the schedule row. For wages up to RM20,000, take the employee and employer amounts from the applicable Third Schedule row. Apply the schedule’s rounding instruction; do not substitute a hand-calculated exact percentage.
- Check for a separate voluntary election. If an i-Topup election is active, distinguish that extra contribution from the statutory amount. KWSP says the selected voluntary excess rate remains in place until a cancellation notice is submitted.
For an employer, KWSP also describes its e-Payroll service as a tool that calculates EPF and supports monthly, weekly, and daily wages. Whatever calculation method is used, the relevant wage month, schedule version, and employee category still need to be correct.

Worked comparison: salary rises from RM4,900 to RM5,100
Assume the employee is in the common under-60 category, each figure is the monthly wage for an ordinary month, and there are no arrears or voluntary excess contributions. Compare the row for RM4,900 with the row for RM5,100 in the Third Schedule effective for each respective wage month.

The example shows why a pay rise can have two effects: it increases the wage base and, when it crosses RM5,000, moves the common-category employer share to a different rate category. The employee’s rate category remains 11% in this example. The exact ringgit contributions should come from the correct schedule rows; do not publish or rely on a hand-calculated percentage estimate for these wages.
If the salary change does not cross a rate threshold, the applicable category may stay the same while the schedule row changes. A decrease works the same way in reverse: use the wages due and the applicable row for that month, then check whether the change crosses a threshold. A salary change by itself does not alter age, citizenship, membership history, or an existing voluntary election.

How a backdated salary increment is treated
A retroactive wage revision is not treated as though each past month had been paid at the revised salary for EPF calculation purposes. Under the EPF Act, wage-revision arrears are included in the wages for the month in which those arrears are paid, in addition to that month’s other wages due. The month of payment can therefore have a larger wage base than an ordinary month at the new salary.

Example: new salary plus arrears in one payment month
Suppose a revised salary takes effect earlier, but the arrears are paid together with a later month’s salary. For the later wage month, account for that month’s wages and the arrears paid then, and apply the schedule to the resulting amount in accordance with the Act and KWSP guidance. Do not silently spread the arrears back across prior months or treat the payment month as an ordinary month at the new monthly salary.
The applicable contribution can depend on the total wages in the month that includes arrears. That is particularly important if the combined amount crosses a wage band or a threshold. For a specific payroll case, check the applicable schedule and the EPF Act 1991 legal framework.

What changes for non-Malaysian employees?
Do not apply one non-Malaysian rate to every employee. KWSP’s listed member categories include some non-Malaysian members under 60 in the common 11% employee category, and a separate 2% employee and 2% employer category for non-Malaysians registered as EPF members from 1 August 1998. Age and membership history can therefore matter alongside the wage amount.
Mandatory contributions for covered non-Malaysian employees began for wages from October 2025, with the contribution month in November 2025. KWSP’s announcement sets out the eligibility conditions and excludes domestic servants; consult that announcement and the current schedule for the employee’s circumstances. The start date is a coverage rule, not a reason to apply the same rate to every foreign worker.

An employee, employer, or both may elect to contribute above the statutory rates through i-Topup. This is optional and should be treated separately when comparing the statutory deduction before and after a salary change. KWSP says the chosen rate continues until a cancellation notice is submitted, so an existing election may affect the amount actually contributed even though the statutory category has not changed. See KWSP’s i-Topup guidance for the current process and terms.

How to check a changed contribution or payroll result
If the EPF amount on a payslip differs from what you expected, check the inputs in a consistent order rather than comparing the deduction with a simple percentage of salary.
- Wage month and schedule: verify the month being processed and the schedule effective for that month.
- Correct wages: confirm the wages used for that month, including any wage-revision arrears paid during it.
- Employee category: check age, citizenship or membership category, and any qualifying registration or election history.
- Threshold and schedule row: confirm whether the wages cross RM5,000 or RM20,000, and for wages up to RM20,000 compare the result with the actual schedule row.
- Rounding: account for KWSP’s instruction to round up where contributions include cents, and its stated method for wages above RM20,000.
- Voluntary excess: determine whether an i-Topup rate remains active in addition to the statutory contribution.
These checks also make before-and-after comparisons meaningful. Keep the employee category constant, compare the appropriate schedule rows for the two wage months, and separately identify any arrears or i-Topup amount. If the inputs are right but the recorded contribution still differs from the schedule, ask payroll to show the wage amount, category, schedule row, and any voluntary excess used in its calculation.
