Tesla’s reputation has fallen sharply as Elon Musk became more politically prominent and harder to separate from the company. Surveys show worsening brand perceptions and purchase consideration, while U.S. registration data show that Tesla’s repeat-buyer loyalty dropped before partly recovering. The evidence supports political entanglement as an important factor—not proof that Musk alone caused Tesla’s troubles.
What does “toxic” mean for Tesla’s brand?
“Toxic” is a metaphor for a reputational problem, not a measurable category. The evidence points to a widening gap between Tesla’s reputation as a company and perceptions of its cars: its standing on character, ethics, and trust deteriorated more than its ratings for products and services.
Tesla built its identity around stylish, high-performance electric cars and a climate-oriented vision. Over time, Musk became closely identified with the company. That connection helped make his increasingly polarizing public profile relevant to how some people viewed Tesla itself. But unfavorable opinions, stated interest in buying, and actual repeat purchases are different measures; none alone establishes why a particular person did or did not buy a car.
How much did Tesla’s reputation fall?
The Axios Harris Poll 100 placed Tesla 8th in 2021, 63rd in 2024, and 95th out of 100 in 2025. These are annual reputation rankings, not sales figures. Axios reported that Tesla ranked last for character in 2025 and near the bottom on ethics and citizenship. In 2024, its relative standing was stronger for products and services, vision, and growth than for character, trust, and ethics. Axios’s 2025 ranking report and its 2024 report describe the results.

A separate national survey captured public impressions at a specific moment. AP-NORC surveyed 1,158 U.S. adults from June 5–9, 2025, using its probability-based AmeriSpeak panel. It found 57% had an unfavorable impression of Musk, about half had a negative view of Tesla, and roughly a third viewed Tesla favorably. The overall margin of sampling error was ±4 percentage points. By comparison, about six in ten viewed Ford and GM favorably, and 72% viewed Toyota favorably. These findings describe U.S. opinion in June 2025, not a worldwide consensus or a forecast of sales. AP-NORC’s survey report provides the details.
Did Musk’s politics affect purchase interest?
The evidence suggests that Musk’s political profile became a liability for some potential buyers, but it does not isolate politics from other influences. Reuters reported that Caliber found 83% of Americans associated Musk with Tesla. In the same reporting, Tesla’s Caliber consideration score—the share indicating potential purchase interest—fell from 70% in November 2021 to 31% in February 2024. Consideration is stated interest, not a completed purchase. Reuters described Musk’s increasingly polarizing persona and political activity as one factor in the decline, while noting that Musk pointed to high interest rates. Reuters’s account of the Caliber findings explains the measure.

Political response was not simply a story of Democratic customers turning away. A July 2025 Semafor report on Slingshot Strategies polling of 8,000 consumers said Republican respondents were 11 percentage points less likely to say they would buy a Tesla than in April, before Musk’s break with President Trump. That is a change in poll-based propensity, not observed purchasing behavior. Pollster Evan Roth Smith said, “What he’s done by wrapping Tesla into his political adventures and, now, misadventures is very dangerous for the brand.” This is Smith’s interpretation, not a neutral measurement. Semafor’s report gives the polling context.
What happened to repeat buyers?
Registration data offer a behavioral measure distinct from surveys about opinion or intent. Reuters reported that S&P Global Mobility’s U.S. household vehicle-registration analysis put Tesla’s loyalty—a measure of households returning to the brand—at a 73% peak in June 2024. It then fell to 49.9% in March 2025 and recovered to 57.4% in May 2025. S&P analyst Tom Libby told Reuters, “I’ve never seen this rapid of a decline in such a short period of time.” The figures show a steep decline followed by a partial rebound, not a permanent collapse. Reuters’s report on the S&P data describes the measure and period.

The timing is notable but does not settle causation. Reuters reported that the decline began in July 2024, after Musk endorsed Trump, and continued through the period when Musk held a government role. The same report cites an aging model lineup, tougher electric-vehicle competition, and several weeks of lost production during factory retooling for the refreshed Model Y. At an April earnings call, Musk said Tesla did not see a demand reduction absent macroeconomic issues. Those factors matter when interpreting registrations and sales; they do not negate the separate evidence of worsening reputation.
Why did Musk’s political profile spill over to Tesla?
The CEO and the company became difficult to separate
When a large share of people associate a company with its chief executive, the executive’s public reputation can influence perceptions of the brand. Caliber’s reported 83% association finding makes this mechanism plausible in Tesla’s case. It does not show that every person who dislikes Musk dislikes Tesla, or that association alone changed buying decisions.

Political identity may have changed the customer fit
Tesla’s climate and technology identity had appeal among environmentally minded buyers. Musk’s support for Trump and increasingly partisan activity risked alienating some consumers who had been drawn to that identity. At the same time, the July 2025 poll suggests a shift in stated Republican purchase interest too; political alignment did not simply create a replacement audience large enough to keep every measure of interest steady.
Reputation is not the same as product quality
Harris Poll rankings separate dimensions such as character, ethics, citizenship, trust, and product performance. Tesla’s relatively stronger 2024 placements for products and services and vision show why a poor overall reputation ranking should not be translated into the claim that consumers broadly consider its cars bad. Buyers can value a product and still object to the company or its leader.

How strong is the evidence that Musk caused lost sales?
The clearest evidence concerns reputation, stated consideration, and repeat-buyer loyalty—not a definitive count of sales lost solely because of Musk. In October 2025, Reuters summarized a Yale economists’ NBER working paper that modeled U.S. sales from October 2022 through April 2025 as 67% to 83% higher—about 1 million to 1.26 million additional vehicles—without an estimated “Musk partisan effect.” The researchers also estimated competitor electric and hybrid sales would have been 17% to 22% higher as buyers shifted. These are unusually large model-based counterfactual estimates, not observed counts of identifiable lost customers or a settled consensus. Reuters’s report on the working paper describes the estimates.
The responsible conclusion is narrower: Musk’s growing political prominence coincided with, and plausibly contributed to, a substantial deterioration in Tesla’s U.S. reputation and some measures of consumer interest. Competition, product cadence, production interruptions, interest rates, and broader market conditions also shaped the commercial picture. The available measures do not establish a single cause or support a complete comparison across countries.
