eBay’s move to manage marketplace payments did not mean PayPal disappeared from checkout. Announced in 2018, the change shifted management of the payment flow to eBay, which named Adyen as its primary processing partner. PayPal remained one of the ways buyers could pay in eBay’s official descriptions of the transition.
Did eBay stop using PayPal?
No—not as a buyer payment option in the transition announcements cited here. The change was about who managed the marketplace payment flow, not a declaration that PayPal could no longer be used to pay for an eBay purchase. eBay’s 2018 announcement said PayPal would remain a checkout option, and its 2020 rollout update continued to list PayPal among buyer payment options.

What is eBay managed payments?
Managed payments is eBay’s name for the marketplace payment experience in which eBay manages the payment flow between buyers and sellers. In the former arrangement, PayPal had been a long-time payment partner; eBay’s shift brought payment management into its own marketplace experience, with Adyen named as its primary processing partner. The available sources describe the strategic arrangement and rollout, but do not establish the current technical or contractual division of processing work between eBay and Adyen.

What did buyers and sellers experience?
Buyer checkout
eBay presented the change as a way to support multiple payment options through a marketplace-managed checkout. Its 2020 product update listed credit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay on iPhone and iPad, Google Pay on eBay and its Android app, and selected local services such as Afterpay in Australia and Paybright in Canada. Seller payments and account management
eBay described a consolidated workspace for inventory and finances, including reports, fees, refunds, protections, and payout scheduling. In a 2018 Q&A, eBay said cleared funds for sellers on managed payments would generally be paid daily to their bank accounts, while noting that card brands and banks affect settlement timing. Why did eBay choose this approach?
eBay said it wanted greater control over the marketplace payment process. eBay’s announcements document a staged expansion, but their figures are milestones from specific points in time rather than current totals:

What these announcements do—and do not—establish
eBay’s official timeline supports a clear historical account: it announced marketplace payment management in 2018, named Adyen its primary processing partner, continued to include PayPal among buyer options in its transition communications, and reported managed payments live in all global markets in 2021. The 2020 completion target was 2022.

Those historical statements do not establish which payment methods are available to a buyer in a particular country today, current fees or payout schedules, or the present contractual and technical allocation of processing between eBay and Adyen. For a transaction, sellers and buyers should rely on the payment and payout information shown in their own current eBay account and checkout.
Does PayPal still have a relationship with eBay?
eBay and PayPal finalized a new payments agreement in 2018, separate from eBay’s decision to manage marketplace payments and work with Adyen.
