Yes. PayPal is a digital wallet and payment service that lets you link a bank account or card, pay participating merchants without repeatedly sharing your full payment details, and send or receive money. Eligible U.S. customers may also see two different Pay Later products at checkout: Pay in 4 and Pay Monthly. Pay in 4 splits a qualifying purchase into four interest-free payments; Pay Monthly is a fixed-term loan that charges interest.
The terms below reflect PayPal’s U.S. disclosures checked August 16, 2026 (for publication on August 18, 2026). Offers, state availability and eligibility can change.

What PayPal is
PayPal is a digital wallet and payment intermediary, not simply a bank account or a loan. You create a PayPal account, connect funding sources and use PayPal to pay online, transfer money to other users or access separate products such as PayPal Balance, cards, rewards and Pay Later financing. Each product has its own terms.

How PayPal works at checkout
- Create or sign in to PayPal and add a bank account, debit card, credit card or eligible PayPal Balance.
- At a participating merchant, select the PayPal button.
- PayPal authenticates you and displays available funding methods.
- Choose the source, check whether a backup method is listed, and confirm.
- PayPal confirms the transaction to the merchant, which then fulfills the order.
- PayPal charges the selected source under the applicable terms.
PayPal says it supports Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express cards. A backup source may be used if your preferred method is unavailable or insufficient, so review the funding source before clicking confirm. Details are in PayPal’s payment-method help page.
Sending and receiving money
Friends and Family
Use a personal payment for gifts, splitting bills or other noncommercial transfers. In the U.S., sending from PayPal Balance or a bank account is generally free; a card-funded personal payment can incur a fee.
Goods and Services
Use this option when buying an item or service. Eligible purchases may receive PayPal Purchase Protection, and the seller generally pays the transaction fee. Do not send a purchase as Friends and Family because a seller asks you to avoid fees: personal payments are not covered by Purchase Protection, and payments generally cannot be canceled or reclassified afterward. See the payment-type explanation and sending-money instructions.

PayPal Pay in 4
Pay in 4 divides an eligible purchase into four equal scheduled payments over a little more than six weeks. PayPal currently advertises a $30–$1,500 purchase range and no interest, sign-up fee, application fee, late fee or PayPal NSF fee. A returned debit can still trigger a fee from your bank or financial institution.

These are PayPal examples, not guaranteed offers. Each purchase requires a new application. Applicants may be asked for a U.S. address, phone details, date of birth, SSN or ITIN, after-tax annual income and other identity information. PayPal says decisions can consider application data, credit score, PayPal transaction history and account age.
You can pay manually or use autopay from a confirmed bank account or debit card; PayPal Balance can be used for manual repayment, but PayPal’s help page says credit cards are not accepted for Pay Monthly repayments. Early payoff is allowed without a prepayment penalty. A missed payment can still harm your credit, even though PayPal does not advertise a late fee. Do not use Pay Monthly for a backordered item; PayPal specifically says those loans are not recommended.
How to use Pay Later
- Add the item at a participating merchant and choose PayPal.
- If offered, select Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly.
- Read the payment dates, APR, fees and total repayment; for Pay Monthly, read the loan disclosure.
- Submit the application or accept the displayed Pay in 4 plan.
- If approved, confirm the purchase.
- Monitor the plan and make payments in the PayPal website or app under Pay Later.
PayPal says decisions generally arrive within seconds, but the screen and menu labels vary by merchant, device, account, state and product version. Use the actual checkout disclosure, not a remembered estimate.
Eligibility, restrictions and declines
You must generally be at least 18 or the age of majority in your state. Pay Later availability can be limited by the merchant, purchase amount, excluded item, subscription or recurring billing, state, account standing or PayPal’s eligibility decision. PayPal’s current disclosures list Pay in 4 as unavailable in Missouri and Pay Monthly as unavailable in Alaska, Connecticut, Hawaii and Washington; recheck those notices before applying.

If an application is declined, do not repeatedly apply to force approval. Review PayPal’s secure message, then use another payment method or abandon the purchase. A decline does not necessarily prevent ordinary PayPal checkout, and paying off another plan does not guarantee future approval.
Returns, refunds and disputes
Start a normal return or cancellation with the merchant. The merchant’s refund generally travels through PayPal and is applied to the related Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly balance, but a return does not instantly erase a plan. Keep checking scheduled payments until the refund or adjustment is confirmed; stopping autopay alone does not cancel the debt.
For an eligible purchase that was not delivered or was materially misdescribed, Purchase Protection may help subject to its terms and exclusions. Friends and Family payments are not covered. PayPal’s merchant documentation describes standard refunds for both Pay Later products at its installment-payments page.

Fees, safety and funding pitfalls
“Interest-free” applies to Pay in 4’s advertised pricing, not every possible cost. Currency conversion, international transfers, card funding, merchant policies, bank fees and returned payments can change what you pay. Pay in 4 transactions in supported currencies are converted to U.S. dollars before the application.

PayPal says recipients do not receive your full bank or card details. Still use a unique password, multifactor authentication where available, and caution with fake invoices, phishing messages and impersonators. PayPal does not guarantee a refund for every scam, defective item or unauthorized transaction; eligibility and exclusions govern protection. See PayPal’s safety guidance.
Using a credit card to fund Pay in 4
Do not assume this creates a free rewards strategy. Card issuers differ in how they treat BNPL funding, rewards and cash advances, and PayPal may restrict methods for a particular transaction. Rely on the checkout disclosure and your card agreement; PayPal’s comparison is at this page.
When Pay Later makes sense
Potentially reasonable
- The purchase is already budgeted and all scheduled payments fit predictable income.
- You have compared total repayment with paying cash, an existing card or other financing.
- For Pay Monthly, the APR is acceptable and you have a payoff plan for the full term.
Usually a poor fit
- You need borrowing to cover an essential bill or have irregular income.
- Several BNPL plans already overlap with rent, utilities or other fixed expenses.
- You are focused on the monthly figure, the item is discretionary or backordered, or you may return it.
- A lower-cost promotional credit-card offer or cash payment is available.
Before confirming, write down the total price, every payment date, Pay Monthly APR and total repayment, return policy, funding source and what happens if a debit fails. Compare alternatives such as paying in full, an existing card, a qualifying 0% introductory-APR card or retailer financing—but compare total cost, not just installment size.
If a payment fails
- Check the linked account or card balance.
- Confirm the card has not expired or been removed.
- Open PayPal’s Pay Later area and review the plan.
- Make a manual payment if the option is available.
- Contact PayPal promptly if the problem remains.
- Check your bank for a possible returned-payment fee.
A missing PayPal late fee does not make a failed payment harmless, particularly for Pay Monthly credit reporting.
Bottom line
PayPal is the wallet; Pay Later is separate financing offered inside it. Pay in 4 is the shorter, interest-free option for eligible purchases you can repay in roughly six weeks. Pay Monthly can spread a larger cost over as long as 24 months, but its advertised APR can reach 35.99% and the total repayment may substantially exceed the purchase price. Choose only after checking the exact offer, payment dates, restrictions and total cost shown at checkout.
