Alibaba.com is a business-to-business (B2B) marketplace where companies can find products and suppliers, request quotes, negotiate wholesale orders, pay, and arrange shipping. Buyers can search listings or post a sourcing request; sellers list products, respond to inquiries, and quote on requests. Alibaba.com provides tools for those steps, but buyers and suppliers still need to agree on the product, price, delivery, and other order terms.
This guide is about Alibaba.com, not every business operated by Alibaba Group. Its published process explains how the marketplace works; it does not guarantee that a particular supplier or order will meet your needs.
How Alibaba.com works for buyers
A buyer typically moves from finding a product to checking suppliers, agreeing on written terms, arranging payment, and receiving the shipment. The specific options and protections depend on the supplier, destination, and order.
1. Find products or describe what you need
Search by product or supplier, browse categories, or submit a Request for Quotation (RFQ) describing the product and requirements. Sellers can then respond with quotes. Alibaba.com’s buyer guide says listings may be for ready-to-ship products or items that can be customized. Alibaba.com Buyer Central

2. Evaluate suppliers and ask questions
Review company profiles and available verification information, then use the listing inquiry flow to ask about specifications, capacity, price, minimum order quantity, production time, and shipping. Alibaba.com describes two distinct supplier badges:
- Gold Supplier: Alibaba.com says the supplier’s business registration has been verified by a third party.
- Verified Supplier: Alibaba.com says third parties have assessed, certified, or inspected aspects of the company profile, management, production capability, products, and processes.
These badges describe verification steps; they are not a guarantee that a specific product or order will satisfy your requirements. Judge the offer on its own details and the supplier’s answers.
3. Agree on the order in writing
Before committing, document the product specifications, quality standard, quantity, price, delivery date, and shipping arrangements in the order or purchase order. Alibaba.com recommends detailed purchase orders and suggests asking for a sample before placing a larger order. If you receive a sample, compare it with the exact specification you intend to put in the order.

4. Check payment and order protection
Trade Assurance is Alibaba.com’s order protection service for eligible transactions. Alibaba.com describes a process in which buyer and supplier agree on the order, the buyer pays through the platform, payment is held in escrow, and Alibaba.com can help resolve problems, including through refunds or compensation. Its buyer guide lists product quality, on-time shipping, payment security, and dispute resolution among the protections. Alibaba.com Trade Assurance
Do not assume that every supplier, payment, or order is covered. Check whether Trade Assurance applies to the exact order and read its terms before paying. Alibaba.com advises keeping relevant communication and payment on-platform to qualify for protection, subject to its stated wire-transfer exception; follow the payment instructions shown for your order and verify any exception in the applicable terms.
5. Arrange shipping and check receipt
Alibaba.com says it offers logistics services and tracking in most countries and regions. Shipping method, cost, timing, and responsibility for customs or other charges should be confirmed with the supplier as part of the order. The buyer guide states a 30-day protection period after receipt, but the applicable period and eligibility conditions should be checked against the live order terms rather than assumed.
How to compare Alibaba.com suppliers and quotes
A low unit price alone does not establish which offer is best. Compare the terms that affect whether the goods arrive as needed and what the order costs overall:
- Product and sample: Do the specifications, quality standard, customization, and sample match what you need?
- Quantity and total cost: What is the minimum order quantity, and what is the total cost after shipping and other applicable charges?
- Timing: How long will production take, when is shipment expected, and what delivery arrangement is included?
- Supplier information: What verification details are available, and are the supplier’s responses clear and specific?
- Protection: Does Trade Assurance cover this exact order, and are the agreed requirements recorded in the protected order?
These are practical comparison criteria, not a claim that Alibaba.com ranks suppliers using all of them.

Trade Assurance is intended to support eligible orders through platform payment and dispute resolution. Alibaba.com’s description is not a blanket guarantee of product quality, delivery, or a refund in every case. The order’s eligibility, written terms, payment path, and the evidence available in a dispute matter.

Before paying, make sure the order states what was agreed, use the approved platform payment method, and keep relevant messages in Alibaba.com’s Message Center. If the shipment or goods do not match the order, use the dispute process and documentation specified in the live terms. Alibaba.com’s buyer guide also identifies samples, production monitoring, inspections, and logistics as possible sourcing considerations; availability can vary by product, supplier, and destination.

For sellers, Alibaba.com is a channel to present products and company information, answer buyer inquiries, and pursue sourcing requests. Seller Central describes onboarding as a sequence of account setup, business verification, product posting, storefront creation, and responding to inquiries. Sellers can also review buyer RFQs and quote on requests they can fulfill. Alibaba.com Seller Central
An RFQ is a buyer’s sourcing request for sellers to quote on. Alibaba.com’s RFQ page describes sellers selecting suitable requests and sending detailed quotes. That page states “20,000 new requests each day,” but does not give a publication year for the figure, so it should be treated as an undated Alibaba.com claim, not a verified current volume. Seller packages can depend on the seller’s country, so there is no single package or price that applies universally. Alibaba.com Seller RFQ page

The marketplace connects buyers and suppliers and provides sourcing and transaction tools, but it does not remove the need to assess an offer. Buyers still need to define requirements, compare terms, and confirm that the supplier can meet them. A supplier badge is not a substitute for checking the order, and a protection service is not a reason to leave important specifications undocumented.
Alibaba.com Buyer Central describes “over 150,000 manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors” on the platform, but the page does not state when that figure was published. Treat it as an undated platform claim, not an independently audited current count. No dated, independently published overall user count is established by the cited official pages.
