A company can buy Bitcoin with cash generated by its business, but it cannot spend “operating income” as if it were a bank balance. It must first turn its cash-flow forecast into a decision about what remains available after operating bills, taxes, capital spending, debt payments, and an appropriate liquidity reserve. Any funds raised by borrowing or issuing securities are separate financing sources—not operating income.
Operating income is not the same as cash available to invest
Operating income is an accounting measure of business performance. A Bitcoin purchase, however, requires cash. Net income or operating income does not by itself show how much cash the company can safely spend: working-capital movements, capital expenditures, taxes, debt obligations, and non-cash accounting items all affect cash availability.
The closest match to “funding a purchase from operations” is cash generated by the company’s business activities. Even then, the company must consider when that cash arrives and what other claims on it are due. A profitable business can have limited spare cash, while cash already on hand may have come from financing rather than operations.
How a company decides whether operating cash can fund a purchase
A treasury team can treat the decision as a cash waterfall. The objective is to establish what cash is genuinely discretionary, rather than treating a period’s reported operating income or cash flow as an automatic Bitcoin budget.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Forecast operating cash: estimate cash expected from the business over a planning period that matches the timing of its obligations.
- Set aside expected uses: account for payroll, supplier payments, taxes, capital expenditures, debt service, and other known commitments.
- Protect operating liquidity: retain a reserve for routine working-capital needs and plausible disruptions. Strategy has described a policy that considers minimum cash assets and working-capital requirements, but that policy is specific to the company, not a universal standard. Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K
- Apply treasury policy and governance: determine whether cash remaining above the company’s reserve can be allocated to Bitcoin, taking account of its own cash needs, capital structure, and market conditions.
- Record the actual funding source: distinguish operating cash from existing excess cash and from money raised through financing.
The cited filings do not set a universal reserve size, cash-flow ratio, or Bitcoin allocation. A company must base those choices on its own obligations, liquidity needs, and treasury policy.
Funding routes are not interchangeable
| Source | What it means | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Cash generated by operations | Cash from business activities, affected by timing and working-capital movements. | This is the closest fit to the title, but only cash available after operating needs and reserves can be invested. Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K |
| Existing excess cash | Cash already held above operating-liquidity requirements. | A balance alone does not establish whether the cash came from operations, borrowing, or a securities offering. Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K |
| Debt or equity proceeds | Money raised by borrowing or issuing shares, notes, or other securities. | These are financing sources, not operating income; debt carries repayment obligations, while issuing equity can dilute existing shareholders. Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K |
| Sale of mined Bitcoin | A mining company sells some Bitcoin produced by its operations to obtain cash. | This is a mining-specific route, not an example of an ordinary business buying Bitcoin with commercial cash flow. MARA’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K |
| Sale of existing Bitcoin or financing against it | A company sells holdings or pledges them to obtain liquidity. | This monetizes or borrows against an existing asset; it does not explain how the original Bitcoin purchase was funded. Fold’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K |
What company filings illustrate
Strategy: operating cash alongside capital raising
Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says it had previously bought Bitcoin using cash flow from operations, as well as proceeds from capital raises and borrowings. The filing also describes an acquisition policy that considers cash needs, working-capital requirements, capital structure, and market conditions. This is a company-specific account of its historical funding sources and policy, not a recommendation or a template for every business. Read Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K

MARA: selling some Bitcoin produced by mining
MARA’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says that in the second half of 2025 it began selling a portion of Bitcoin produced by its mining operations to fund ongoing operating expenses, and continued those sales through year-end. The cash source here is mined Bitcoin sold by a miner; it should not be conflated with a non-mining company directing ordinary operating cash into a Bitcoin purchase. Fold: possible uses of Bitcoin already held
Fold’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K describes possible future treasury choices: selling Bitcoin for general corporate purposes, pledging or committing Bitcoin as collateral for financing, using it as reserve collateral for operating-business products, or pursuing income-generating strategies. These are contemplated options, not guaranteed outcomes or evidence that the initial Bitcoin holdings were purchased with operating income. Read Fold’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K

How to compare operating cash with other sources
No funding method is universally preferable. A company assessing alternatives should consider how each affects liquidity, obligations, and its Bitcoin exposure:
- Liquidity impact: how much cash remains for operations and upcoming obligations?
- Cost and obligation: debt creates interest and repayment requirements; equity can dilute existing shareholders; selling Bitcoin gives up some exposure, while retaining it has an opportunity cost.
- Source reliability: recurring business cash flow, access to capital markets, and Bitcoin production each depend on different conditions.
- Bitcoin exposure: is the company buying and holding Bitcoin, selling newly mined Bitcoin, or borrowing against Bitcoin already in its treasury?
- Downside flexibility: could a fall in cash flow or a change in Bitcoin’s price leave the company needing to sell assets or meet difficult repayment obligations?
The cited company filings describe their own choices; they do not provide a standardized comparison of the costs or performance of these funding routes.
