If you return an item bought with PayPal Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly, the merchant processes the refund and PayPal generally applies it to the loan for that purchase. Keep making scheduled payments while the refund is pending, then check both the refund record in Activity and the plan in Pay Later. These details reflect PayPal’s U.S. guidance; terms and availability can vary by country, account, and loan agreement.
Do you still have to make payments while waiting for a refund?
Yes. An expected refund, return request, or open dispute does not itself pause your installment schedule. PayPal instructs Pay in 4 and Pay Monthly customers to continue making repayments as scheduled until the merchant processes the refund. Contact the merchant to request a refund for a completed purchase.

Do not skip a payment based only on a return confirmation or the merchant’s promise to refund you. Check your plan after the refund has been processed and its balance and schedule have updated.
How PayPal applies the refund
The merchant handles the return and sends the refund to PayPal. PayPal then attempts to apply it to the installment loan associated with the purchase. The effect depends on the refund amount, the remaining loan balance, and whether PayPal can match the refund to the correct plan.

Full refund
If a Pay in 4 refund pays off the remaining balance, PayPal says no further repayments are due. Confirm that the plan shows as completed before treating future installments as cleared.
Partial refund
A partial Pay in 4 refund may reduce the number of payments remaining or reduce the final payment. Do not assume a particular installment amount or due date will change; check the updated schedule in the plan details.

Refund larger than the remaining balance
If the refund exceeds what remains owed, PayPal says the excess is moved to your PayPal balance. When repayments are in progress, this processing may take up to seven days. Check the plan and PayPal balance separately.
When a refund does not reduce the installment balance
The merchant gave you store credit, cash, or a gift card
A remedy paid directly by the merchant is not the same as a refund sent through PayPal to the loan. PayPal says any remaining Pay in 4 balance is still due if the merchant provides store credit, a gift card, or cash instead of refunding the PayPal transaction.

PayPal could not match the refund to the plan
If PayPal cannot identify which plan should receive a merchant refund, the money may be placed in your PayPal balance without reducing the loan. Pay Monthly guidance describes a similar unmatched-refund issue; the loan and any interest remain subject to the agreement. If the balance remains due, check whether the refund is in your PayPal balance and contact PayPal about applying it to the plan.
The refund is marked sent, but the plan still shows a balance
A refund status of sent or completed does not by itself establish that the installment loan is paid off. The refund may be going to a payment method, may be unmatched, or the plan record may not yet reflect the adjustment. Review the refund and the loan as separate records.

How to check the refund and installment plan
- Ask the merchant to process the refund. For a completed payment, PayPal directs customers seeking a refund to contact the seller.
- Keep following the payment schedule. Continue scheduled repayments while the merchant processes the return and refund.
- Check the transaction in Activity. Review the refund status and destination. PayPal’s refund tracker can show processing stages, but timing depends on the original payment method.
- Open the plan in Pay Later. Check the remaining balance, amounts paid, plan activity, and upcoming payment schedule. For Pay Monthly, also review the payment schedule and loan agreement in the Pay Later Hub.
- Reconcile any mismatch. If the refund appears in PayPal balance but the loan has not changed, you may be able to use that balance to repay the plan through the app or website. Contact PayPal if the refund and plan records still do not align.
Pay in 4 and Pay Monthly: U.S. product context
PayPal’s current U.S. product descriptions say Pay in 4 divides qualifying purchases of $10 to $2,000 into four interest-free biweekly payments. Pay Monthly offers three to 24 monthly payments for qualifying purchases of $49 to $10,000. These are PayPal’s product descriptions, not a guarantee that a particular purchase or account qualifies. Check the terms shown in your account and your loan agreement.
