Re:

How Do I Calculate My College Credits and GPA?

Calculate GPA by dividing total quality points by GPA credits—but degree, transfer, and financial-aid credits use different rules.

“Credits” can mean different things on a college record. If you mean calculating your GPA, multiply each included course’s credits by the grade-point value for the grade earned, add those quality points, then divide by the GPA credits included. If you mean credits earned toward a degree or financial-aid progress, those are separate totals governed by your school’s rules.

How to calculate GPA from course credits

  1. Check the grade-point scale and rules. Use the scale and course-inclusion rules published by your institution; grade values and exclusions are not universal.
  2. Calculate quality points for each included course. Multiply the course’s credit hours by the grade-point value assigned to the grade you earned.
  3. Add the quality points and GPA credits. Include only courses and hours that your school counts in the GPA.
  4. Divide total quality points by total GPA credits. The result is your GPA for those courses.

Formula: GPA = total quality points ÷ GPA credit hours. For each course, quality points = course credits × grade-point value.

Illustrative example: Suppose, using your own institution’s scale, a 3-credit course earns a grade worth 4.0 points and a 4-credit course earns a grade worth 3.0 points. Together they contribute 12 + 12 = 24 quality points across 7 GPA credits, for a GPA of 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43. This example is arithmetic only; use your school’s grade scale and inclusion rules.

Why you should not simply average your grades

Credits weight a course’s grade in the calculation. Averaging course grade-point values without accounting for credits can produce the wrong result when courses have different credit values. A 4-credit course affects the GPA more than a 1-credit course, assuming both are included under the same rules.

What “attempted,” “earned,” and “GPA” credits mean

These labels describe different totals, and a transcript may report more than one. GPA hours are the credits used in a GPA calculation; earned hours generally relate to credits successfully completed. Attempted hours may include courses that were started but not completed successfully, depending on institutional definitions.

SUNY Morrisville, for example, distinguishes GPA hours from earned hours and shows 40 quality points divided by 18 GPA hours as a 2.22 GPA. That illustration is specific to its terminology and records; it is not a universal rule for what counts as attempted, passed, or earned. See SUNY Morrisville’s grading-system definitions.

Other meanings of “calculate my credits”

Credits earned toward a degree

For degree progress, count the credits your program accepts toward its requirements—not just every credit listed on a transcript. Your degree audit, program catalog, or registrar can show whether a course satisfies a requirement, counts as an elective, or does not apply to the program.

Transfer credits

A receiving college decides whether and how prior coursework transfers. Acceptance, credit value, and application to a particular program can differ by institution. A general GPA or credit formula cannot determine how a specific course will transfer. Ask the receiving school to evaluate the course against its current transfer policy.

Financial-aid completion rate

Financial-aid progress is not a GPA. In the archived Maryland policy excerpt, the completion-rate measure is completed credits divided by attempted credits within that policy’s context. It should not be treated as a current or universal formula: check your institution’s current satisfactory academic progress policy for its definitions and requirements. Read the archived University of Maryland policy excerpt.

Which credits should you use?

First decide what question you are answering, then use the corresponding record total and rules.

Question What to count Where to verify
What is my GPA? Quality points and GPA credits for courses included under your school’s rules Transcript, grading policy, or registrar guidance
How many credits have I completed? Earned credits recognized by your institution Transcript or degree audit
Will a course transfer? Credits the receiving institution accepts and applies Receiving institution’s transfer evaluation
Am I meeting financial-aid progress requirements? Attempted and completed credits as defined by the current policy Your institution’s current financial-aid or satisfactory academic progress policy

Where to get an official calculation

Use your transcript to identify grades and credit hours, then check your institution’s current catalog or registrar guidance for the GPA scale, exclusions, repeats, transfer treatment, and rounding rules. Institutional examples show why those details matter: Georgian Court cautions that transfer courses and certain other courses may not apply to its GPA, while the University of Hartford lists marks excluded under its own rules. Neither school’s policy should be assumed to apply elsewhere. Georgian Court GPA guidance and University of Hartford GPA calculation guidance.
