How do dividend stocks perform during market corrections? Dividend-growth stocks have often held up better than the broad U.S. market in months when the S&P 500 fell, but they are not a guaranteed shield. In S&P Dow Jones Indices’ analysis from December 29, 1989, through February 28, 2025, the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats beat the S&P 500 in 66.67% of down months, with an average excess return of 0.87 percentage points. Yet during the 2020 pandemic plunge, the Aristocrats fell 35.2%, slightly more than the S&P 500’s 33.8%.
The practical conclusion is that dividend income and dividend growth can improve a portfolio’s resilience, but a stock’s price can still fall sharply and its dividend can still be reduced. The outcome depends on the strategy’s rules, sector exposures, valuation, time period and whether the comparison uses total returns.

What the long-run evidence actually shows
The most directly relevant comparison is between the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats and the S&P 500. The Aristocrats are not simply the highest-yielding stocks. They are S&P 500 companies that have increased their annual dividends for at least 25 consecutive years. The monthly-rebalance version is equally weighted, so the index’s results reflect both the dividend-growth screen and its portfolio construction.
S&P Dow Jones Indices’ March 2025 report examined total returns in U.S. dollars from December 29, 1989, through February 28, 2025. A “down month” was any month in which the S&P 500 had a negative return. In that conditional sample, the Dividend Aristocrats outperformed the S&P 500 in 66.67% of months. Their average excess return was 0.87 percentage points.

| Measure | Dividend Aristocrats | S&P 500 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share of S&P 500 down months in which Aristocrats outperformed | 66.67% | Not applicable | Based on negative-return months for the S&P 500, December 29, 1989–February 28, 2025 |
| Average excess return in those down months | 0.87 percentage points | Benchmark | An average relative result, not a promise of a positive return |
| Market beta over the analysis period | 0.8 | 1.0 by definition for the benchmark | Historically, the index moved less than the market on average, but beta is not a floor on losses |
| Maximum drawdown | -44.1% | -50.9% | Total returns in U.S. dollars over the report’s period |
The maximum-drawdown figures suggest a shallower worst peak-to-trough decline for the Aristocrats over that window. However, the index launched on May 2, 2005. Results before launch are hypothetical, back-tested index history rather than live performance. Back-tested data can differ from results an investor could have obtained at the time, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
Why “outperformed” does not mean “rose”
If the S&P 500 lost 8% in a month and the Aristocrats lost 6%, the Aristocrats outperformed even though investors still lost money. The 0.87-point average is a relative statistic calculated only in months when the broad market was down. It does not say that the Aristocrats were positive in those months, that every constituent beat the benchmark, or that the same relationship will hold in the next correction.
Do dividend stocks hold up better when the market falls?
Often, dividend-growth indexes have shown relative resilience, but the answer changes with the type of decline. A short, rapid correction driven by a single sector can affect a dividend strategy very differently from a broad recession, an interest-rate shock or a technology-led sell-off.

The 2020 pandemic plunge is an important counterexample
From the S&P 500 peak on February 19, 2020, to its low on March 23, 2020, the S&P 500 fell 33.8%. The Dividend Aristocrats fell 35.2% over the same episode. That result contradicts any claim that dividend stocks always lose less.
The two indexes then gained about 52% from March 23 through August 12, 2020. A strategy that appeared more defensive during one part of the episode did not necessarily provide better results over every subsequent period. The episode also shows why a month-by-month statistic and a peak-to-trough correction statistic answer different questions: the former counts many individual negative months, while the latter captures one continuous market decline.
A recent provider-reported example
S&P Dow Jones Indices’ 2026 commentary reported that the Dividend Aristocrats outperformed by almost 7% during the S&P 500’s first-quarter 2026 drawdown. That is a single, provider-reported episode, not evidence of a universal premium. The commentary does not by itself establish how much came from dividend income, sector allocation, valuation, constituent changes or other factors.

Why dividends can cushion total returns without stopping price declines
A stock’s total return combines its price change and distributions. If the share price falls 10% while a 1% dividend is received during the measurement period, the total return is approximately -9% before compounding and taxes. The payment cushions the loss; it does not prevent it.

Dividend strategies may also have characteristics that historically reduced volatility, such as profitable, mature businesses and equal weighting. Those characteristics are not identical to the dividend itself. A high-yield company with weak cash flow can be riskier than a lower-yield company with a long record of increases.

Dividend continuation is a different risk from share-price performance
Investors often ask two separate questions: “Will the stock price fall?” and “Will the company keep paying?” A company can continue paying a dividend while its shares decline, and a stock can hold up temporarily before a dividend cut is announced.
What the financial-crisis evidence says
New York Fed research on U.S. bank holding companies during the 2007–09 financial crisis found that many large institutions continued paying dividends as market conditions deteriorated, losses accumulated and emergency capital and liquidity support was provided. At the same time, larger bank holding companies were more likely overall to reduce or eliminate dividends.

It should not be generalized to every listed company, every sector or every market correction. It does show why a long payment history is not an unconditional promise: management can preserve a distribution for a time, then cut it when capital requirements, earnings or cash flow change.

“Dividend stocks” covers several different strategies
The phrase can describe portfolios with very different risks. Before using performance statistics, identify which category is being measured.
| Strategy type | Typical selection idea | Correction-related consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend-growth strategy | Companies with long records of annual increases; the Aristocrats require at least 25 consecutive years | May tilt toward mature, profitable firms, but can still be exposed to economically sensitive sectors |
| High-yield strategy | Stocks offering relatively large current yields | Yield can be high because the share price has fallen or because the payout is at risk; yield alone is not downside protection |
| Broad dividend-payer strategy | Companies that pay dividends, without necessarily requiring growth or a long record | Includes a wide range of financial strength, payout policies and sector exposures |
| Broad-market index | Market-capitalization exposure across the market | Useful benchmark for an apples-to-apples total-return comparison |
S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 as selecting above-median-yield companies using dividend growth, return on equity and free-cash-flow-to-debt criteria. That is a different design from the 25-year increase requirement and equal weighting used for the Dividend Aristocrats. Results for one index should not be presented as results for all dividend funds.
How to evaluate a dividend strategy before a correction
- Check the return convention. Use total returns when comparing an income strategy with the S&P 500. A price-only comparison omits distributions from one or both series.
- Match the dates. Compare the same start and end dates, especially for a peak-to-trough correction. A down-month analysis and a full-drawdown analysis are not interchangeable.
- Separate live history from back-tested history. For the Aristocrats, data before May 2, 2005, are hypothetical. Mark that limitation whenever quoting the long-run figures.
- Measure both relative and absolute loss. Record excess return versus the benchmark and the strategy’s own drawdown. Beating a falling market can still leave a substantial loss.
- Inspect dividend durability. Review payout ratios, free cash flow, debt maturities, earnings cyclicality and management’s stated policy. A 25-year record is useful context, not a guarantee.
- Look at concentration. Sector weights, equal weighting, company size and valuation can explain more of a correction’s outcome than the dividend label.
- Include taxes and reinvestment assumptions. A distribution received in a taxable account is not the same as a tax-deferred reinvestment, and headline index returns may not reflect an individual investor’s tax result.
Common mistakes when interpreting correction performance
- Treating yield as safety. A high yield may reflect a collapsing share price or expectations of a cut.
- Assuming every dividend payer is a Dividend Aristocrat. The Aristocrats are a specific S&P 500 screen with a 25-year increase requirement.
- Confusing lower beta with no losses. A beta of 0.8 is an historical average relationship, not a maximum-loss limit.
- Ignoring constituent changes. Index rules can remove companies after dividend cuts or other eligibility changes; an individual holder may experience the cut before an index rebalances.
- Using one crisis as a rule. The 2020 plunge produced worse performance for the Aristocrats, while other periods favored them.
- Comparing unlike data. Mixing price returns, total returns, different currencies or different dates can create a misleading ranking.
What investors can reasonably expect
A diversified dividend-growth allocation may provide three potential benefits during corrections: cash distributions, a historical tendency toward lower market sensitivity and exposure to companies that have demonstrated an ability to raise payouts. None is assured in every downturn. Prices can fall more than the broad market, payouts can be frozen or cut, and a strategy can lag sharply when non-dividend sectors lead a recovery.

Use the Dividend Aristocrats’ record as evidence about one rules-based index, not as a promise about an entire asset class. The strongest conclusion supported by the available history is conditional: over the measured long period, the Aristocrats more often than not outperformed in S&P 500 down months and had a smaller maximum drawdown, but the 2020 experience proves that they can decline as much as or more than the market in a particular correction.
