For income earned in FY 2025-26, dividends from Indian shares must be included in your AY 2026-27 income-tax return even when the company or broker has already deducted tax. You disclose the dividend in the applicable “Income from Other Sources” section (shown as Schedule OS in the AY 2026-27 validation rules), then claim credit for tax actually withheld. Dividend income by itself does not decide whether you can use ITR-1: your residential status, total income, capital gains, foreign assets, unlisted holdings and loss position must also satisfy the form’s conditions.
Start with the correct year and taxpayer profile
The relevant filing period is AY 2026-27 for income received during FY 2025-26. Before entering any figure, establish whether you are a resident individual, non-resident or another type of taxpayer, and whether the payment came from ordinary ownership of Indian listed shares or from a special arrangement. The resident-individual guidance on the Income Tax Department’s AY 2026-27 eligibility page should not be extended automatically to non-residents, companies, firms or other categories.

Your return should cover the dividend credited or received during the financial year, not merely the amount that reached your bank after withholding. Keep the dividend statement, broker or registrar records and the tax-credit information supplied by the payer so that the income and the credit can be matched before submission.
Does dividend income decide whether you file ITR-1?
No. Dividend is one of the income types that can appear in ITR-1 for an eligible resident individual, but it is only one part of the eligibility test. The department’s AY 2026-27 guidance describes a total-income ceiling of ₹50 lakh and a specified section 112A long-term capital-gains ceiling of ₹1.25 lakh in the relevant ITR-1 context. Those amounts are form-eligibility conditions, not dividend tax rates.

| Check | What the AY 2026-27 guidance indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Residential status | ITR-1 guidance is for an eligible resident individual. | If you are non-resident or have another taxpayer status, use the form-applicability guidance for that status. |
| Dividend income | Dividend is among the listed income types that an eligible resident individual may report in ITR-1. | Include the dividend; withholding does not remove the reporting obligation. |
| Total income | The described ITR-1 eligibility has a ₹50 lakh total-income ceiling. | If your total income exceeds the applicable limit, choose the form prescribed for your facts. |
| Capital gains | The page identifies exclusions for specified capital-gains situations and refers to a ₹1.25 lakh section 112A long-term-capital-gain threshold in the described eligibility test. | Review the complete capital-gains conditions instead of assuming dividend income makes ITR-1 available. |
| Unlisted equity | Specified unlisted-share holdings are listed among ITR-1 exclusions. | Use the appropriate alternative return where the exclusion applies. |
| Foreign connection | Foreign assets or foreign income are listed as exclusions. | Do not use the simple ITR-1 route without checking the form rules for your circumstances. |
| Other exclusions | The guidance also identifies deferred ESOP-tax situations and carried-forward-loss circumstances among restrictions. | Check every condition on the current official page before selecting a form. |
If any exclusion applies, dividend income still has to be reported; only the return form changes. Do not select ITR-1 merely because your only investment income is a dividend.
How dividend is entered and taxed in the return
Report it under the income-from-other-sources section
For AY 2026-27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes validation rules place dividend reporting in Schedule OS (Income from Other Sources). In the return form that applies to you, select the dividend field under that schedule and enter the income for the year. The field labels can differ between forms and utilities, so follow the current form’s instructions rather than copying a label from an older year.
The amount reported is the dividend income itself. Tax withheld by a payer is dealt with separately through the tax-credit section; it is not a reason to reduce or omit the income entry. The return then combines the reported income with your other income and computes the liability under the provisions and rates applicable to your status and tax regime.

Withholding is a credit, not a substitute for disclosure
The department’s ITR-1 FAQ expressly says that income on which tax has been deducted must still be disclosed and that the taxpayer should claim the corresponding TDS credit in the return. Therefore:
- Enter the dividend in the income schedule even if the payer deducted tax before payment.
- Enter or confirm the tax deducted in the TDS schedule using the credit information available for you.
- Claim only the credit that belongs to your PAN and the relevant financial year.
- If the income and credit do not match, investigate the discrepancy instead of deleting the dividend entry.
The exact dividend-TDS rate and threshold for FY 2025-26 should be confirmed from the applicable statute or current CBDT authority before you rely on a number. The official material used for this guide does not establish those figures, so a generic percentage or threshold should not be copied from an earlier year.
Step-by-step filing process for AY 2026-27
- Identify the assessment year. Select AY 2026-27 for dividends earned in FY 2025-26. A return for a different year uses different instructions and potentially different validation rules.
- Confirm your taxpayer profile. Record your residential status, all income sources, capital-gains transactions, unlisted-share holdings, foreign assets or income, carried-forward losses and any deferred ESOP-tax situation. These facts determine whether ITR-1 is available.
- Choose the form before entering dividend figures. Read the department’s current AY 2026-27 form-applicability guidance. If one of its exclusions applies, use the form prescribed for your combination of income and status.
- Collect a complete dividend total. Reconcile all interim and final dividends from Indian shares for FY 2025-26 with broker, registrar and bank records. Separate the income year from the date on which a statement was downloaded.
- Open the current official utility. The department’s Income Tax Returns downloads page lists the AY 2026-27 common offline utility for ITR-1 to ITR-4 and its release information. Utilities and validation files can be revised, so download the latest release shown when you file.
- Enter dividend income in the applicable schedule. Use the Income from Other Sources area; in AY 2026-27 validation material this is Schedule OS. Enter the dividend amount required by the form’s instructions and complete any accompanying classification fields.
- Enter TDS separately. In the TDS or tax-paid section, report the tax deducted that is reflected for your PAN and year. The income entry and the credit entry should reconcile to the payer’s records.
- Review interest expenditure, if any. If you incurred borrowing costs that you believe are directly allowable against dividend income, apply the section 57(1) rules and the AY 2026-27 validation cap described below. Do not insert a deduction merely because the form displays a field.
- Run validation and resolve errors. The utility may flag missing schedules, inconsistent totals or a deduction above the permitted ceiling. Correct the underlying figures and classifications, then validate again.
- Submit and e-verify. Complete the return submission and the applicable electronic verification within the department’s permitted process. Save the acknowledgement and the schedules used so that the dividend and TDS figures can be traced later.
Interest paid to earn dividends: the 20% ceiling
The AY 2026-27 ITR-2 validation rules state that interest expenditure claimed against dividend income under section 57(1) must not exceed 20% of the dividend income. This is a maximum ceiling for an otherwise allowable expense, not an automatic 20% deduction for every shareholder.
Rank #3
For illustration only, if the dividend income entered for the year is ₹1,00,000, the validation ceiling would be ₹20,000. If the qualifying, properly allocated interest is ₹12,000, the ceiling does not turn it into ₹20,000; the claim remains limited to the amount that is legally allowable and supported. Conversely, ₹30,000 of claimed interest would be restricted to no more than ₹20,000 by that validation rule, subject to the underlying legal conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Keep evidence connecting the borrowing to the investment that produced the dividend.
- Allocate only the portion that relates to dividend-earning investments when a loan has mixed uses.
- Do not treat brokerage, portfolio-management charges or unrelated household interest as automatically deductible under this rule.
- Apply the 20% figure as a ceiling, not as a tax rate and not as a guaranteed deduction.
The CBDT document is a validation reference; it does not replace the need to satisfy the substantive conditions for a section 57(1) deduction.
Reconciling dividend records and TDS before filing
A mismatch commonly occurs when a payer’s tax statement covers a dividend that the taxpayer has not included, or when the taxpayer reports income but claims a credit that belongs to another year. Use a simple reconciliation:
Rank #4
- List each Indian company or security that paid a dividend during FY 2025-26.
- Match the gross dividend shown in the dividend advice or broker statement to the amount entered in the return.
- Compare the tax deducted shown by the payer with the credit available in your tax records.
- Check that the PAN, assessment year and deductor details are correct.
- Contact the payer or follow the department’s correction process if a credit is missing or misreported; do not claim an unsupported amount.
Where a payer issued multiple advices or corrected a statement, retain both the original and revised records and use the corrected information in the return. A credit appearing in a tax statement does not authorise you to omit the corresponding income.

You have disqualifying capital gains
Share sales can create capital-gains reporting requirements that fall outside the ITR-1 conditions. The ₹1.25 lakh section 112A reference on the official page is part of a specific eligibility test; it is not a universal exemption or a dividend-related threshold. Review the current capital-gains conditions and select the form that supports those schedules.

You hold unlisted shares
Specified unlisted-equity holdings are listed as an ITR-1 exclusion. This remains relevant even if the only income from the holding during the year was a dividend. Use the department’s form guidance for the return that captures the unlisted holding and related disclosures.

You have foreign assets or income
Foreign assets or foreign income are also identified as exclusions from the described ITR-1 route. Indian-share dividends do not make a return simple if your wider financial profile requires foreign-asset or foreign-income reporting.
You are non-resident or have a complex status
The resident-individual instructions should not be treated as a complete guide to non-resident taxation, treaty claims, special-rate dividends or other cross-border cases. Those situations can require different forms, schedules and supporting documents. Obtain advice based on your status and the specific payment before filing rather than applying the resident ITR-1 workflow unchanged.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Omitting a dividend because TDS was deducted: disclose the income and claim the matching credit separately.
- Choosing ITR-1 solely because you received dividends: run every eligibility test, including status, income ceiling, capital gains and exclusions.
- Using an old utility: download the current AY 2026-27 release from the department’s returns page and revalidate after updates.
- Claiming 20% automatically as interest: treat 20% of dividend income as a ceiling for an otherwise allowable section 57(1) expense.
- Copying a prior-year TDS percentage or threshold: verify the FY 2025-26 figure in the applicable primary authority before entering or explaining it.
- Ignoring a mismatch: reconcile payer records and tax-credit data, then seek correction instead of suppressing the income.
Final pre-submission checklist
- Assessment year selected: AY 2026-27.
- All FY 2025-26 Indian-share dividends included in the income schedule.
- Return form checked against residential status, total income, capital gains, unlisted holdings, foreign assets or income, deferred ESOP tax and carried-forward losses.
- Dividend entered under the applicable Income from Other Sources field, identified as Schedule OS in the AY 2026-27 validation rules.
- TDS credit entered separately and matched to available records.
- Any section 57(1) interest claim supported, allocated correctly and within the 20% validation ceiling.
- Latest official utility downloaded, validation completed and return e-verified.
Following this sequence keeps the central distinction clear: the dividend is income that must be reported, while TDS is a credit to be reconciled against the final liability. The form choice depends on your complete taxpayer profile, not on dividend income alone.
