Dead Space debuted at No. 2 on the U.S. best-selling games chart for January 2023, behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. It was the month’s highest-ranked new release, but it did not lead the chart.

How did Dead Space perform in January 2023 sales?

The 2023 Dead Space, published by Electronic Arts, entered the all-platform U.S. monthly chart at No. 2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II held No. 1. These rankings are from January 2023 and were reported by GamesBeat on February 13, 2023, citing figures attributed to The NPD Group.

Among other new releases in the listed top 20, Fire Emblem Engage ranked fifth, Forspoken seventh, and One Piece Odyssey ninth. The chart therefore places Dead Space ahead of those new entries for the month.

What did January’s overall U.S. game spending show?

Content spending included physical and digital full games, downloadable content and microtransactions, and subscriptions across several platforms; mobile spending figures were provided by Sensor Tower. NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said the shortfall was driven by drops in mobile content, physical console content, and gamepad spending. He also said that increased spending on PlayStation 5 and Switch hardware was offset by declines on other platforms.

Piscatella described January 2023 as the first year-over-year decline in the U.S. video-game market since September 2022, when consumer spending was 4% below September 2021 levels. The figures and his statements are reported in Rachel Kaser’s February 13, 2023 GamesBeat report; they describe that month’s U.S. market, not current sales.

What the chart can—and cannot—tell you

The chart establishes monthly rank, not unit sales, revenue for an individual game, profit, or the size of the gap between titles. It shows that Dead Space was the second-ranked game in the U.S. for January and the highest-ranked new release in the reported top 20; it does not show that the game outsold the No. 1 title or led the market overall.

The same report notes that The Last of Us: Part 1 returned to the top 20 and that Monster Hunter: Rise moved from No. 68 to No. 13. It suggests the HBO series may have contributed to the former and the game’s PlayStation and Xbox releases may have contributed to the latter. Those are proposed explanations, not causes established by the ranking.
