Tom Wagner built his career in finance: after starting in accounting, he moved into high-yield and distressed-credit trading, then co-founded Knighthead Capital Management, an investment firm. Knighthead’s biography says he co-manages the firm’s assets and investment decisions. His Birmingham City investment came later, through a Knighthead affiliate; available sources do not establish his personal net worth or the income he earned from the firm.
Wagner’s career moved from accounting into credit trading
Knighthead’s official biography says Wagner spent five years at Ernst & Young before joining Credit Suisse First Boston. There, he worked as a high-yield trader and special-situations desk analyst.
He joined Goldman Sachs in 2000. According to the biography, he became a managing director running the distressed and high-yield credit trading desks, and co-managed the Capital Structure Franchise Trading desk. That desk combined credit and equity trading for companies with below-investment-grade debt ratings.
He co-founded Knighthead Capital in 2008
Knighthead Capital Management was founded in 2008. The firm identifies Wagner as a co-founder and co-managing member responsible for co-managing its assets and investment decisions for its portfolio and clients. The documented path to his wealth, then, is specialist finance work followed by helping build and run an investment firm.

That explains his career route, but not a precise personal fortune. The available sources do not disclose his Knighthead ownership economics, compensation, carried interest, realized investment returns, or personal net worth. Knighthead’s assets under management, where reported, are the firm’s assets—not Wagner’s personal wealth.
Birmingham City was a later investment
In May 2023, BBC Sport reported that Wagner’s company, Shelby Companies Limited, had agreed to buy a 45.64% stake in Birmingham City and take ownership of St. Andrew’s, subject at the time to regulatory and stock-exchange approvals. On 13 July 2023, the club announced that Shelby Companies, described as a Knighthead affiliate, had completed the transaction, acquiring full ownership and control of St. Andrew’s and a 45.64% shareholding in Birmingham City Limited. Wagner became chairman.

- Vintage Football Merchandise design. Officially licensed by the United Football League.
- Featuring custom artwork by BreakingT.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
The club purchase happened years after Wagner’s finance career and Knighthead’s founding, so it is best understood as a later investment made through an affiliate—not as the original source of his wealth. BBC Sport reported in February 2026 that the affiliate’s stake had risen to 96.64% in November 2025; that is a dated report, not a guarantee of the current ownership structure.
