Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Depreciation is the part of an electric vehicle’s purchase cost you do not recover when you sell it. It can outweigh savings on energy and routine maintenance, so compare EVs and gas-powered cars using the same ownership period, vehicle class, mileage, financing assumptions, and resale estimate. There is no single depreciation rate that predicts what a particular EV will be worth.
How does depreciation affect the cost of owning an EV?
Depreciation is the difference between what you pay for a car and what you receive when you sell or trade it in. It is an ownership cost, even though you do not pay it as a monthly bill. For a vehicle you buy for $40,000 and later sell for $20,000, the unrecovered $20,000 is depreciation before considering financing, running costs, incentives, taxes, or fees.
A useful personal calculation is:
Ownership cost over your period = purchase and financing costs + operating expenses − resale proceeds − applicable incentives, adjusted for taxes and fees.
Operating expenses may include electricity or fuel, maintenance, insurance, and other costs. Studies do not all count the same items, so check the components and assumptions before comparing published totals. The International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies depreciation as a major total-cost-of-ownership factor. Its 2026 five-year country comparison includes capital, financing, maintenance, and fuel costs, but excludes financial support and subsidies. It also uses annual mileage assumptions ranging from 6,500 km to 17,500 km, depending on the country. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026

How much does an EV depreciate?
There is no dependable single percentage for all electric cars. Resale retention varies with geography, period, vehicle age, model, and the comparison method. The IEA’s 2026 report presents year-end market-level retention rates; these figures describe broad markets, not the likely resale value of a particular make or model.
| Market and period | Reported retention pattern | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| China, 2024 | Three-year-old electric cars retained about 46% of value, compared with around 55% for the broader used-car market. | A comparison for that market and vehicle age, not an individual-car forecast. |
| China, late 2025 | Average BEV and PHEV retention was 42%; the broader used-car market was just above 50%. | The IEA says the percentage-point declines were similar. These are market averages. |
| Five European markets, 2022–2025 | BEV retention fell from a peak of about 50% in 2022 to about 35% in 2025. Overall used-car retention fell from around 60% to 50%. | A regional trend across the markets covered, not a rate for every European country or model. |
| United States, end of 2025 | BEV resale values were about 25 percentage points below the overall used-car market. | The IEA labels 2025 U.S. values as estimates because data were limited. |
The IEA notes that its chart cannot adjust for the average age of vehicles sold, which limits direct comparisons. These historical figures can help explain market conditions, but they should not be applied mechanically to a car you plan to buy or sell. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026

Do electric cars lose value faster?
Not as a timeless rule. In its 2024 discussion, the IEA described faster EV depreciation than for comparable internal-combustion vehicles in the period it analyzed, and said that this increased EV total ownership costs. That was a dated assessment, not a guarantee about later years or every market. The IEA’s 2026 figures show that retention patterns differ across regions and periods. What can make an EV’s resale value rise or fall?
- Age and mileage: Buyers generally weigh how old a car is and how much it has been driven when judging its remaining useful life and price.
- Model appeal and local supply: Demand for a particular model, the number of similar used cars for sale, and the availability of alternatives vary by market.
- New-car price changes: A reduction in the price of a new EV can make a used example less attractive at its previous price.
- Newer range or battery technology: Buyers may prefer newer vehicles if they offer improvements they value.
- Battery-health confidence and repair concerns: Questions about battery condition and the possibility of major repairs can affect used-car demand. This does not mean a particular EV will need a battery replacement; assess the individual vehicle rather than assuming one is inevitable.
- Incentives and policy: Support for new or used vehicles can change prices and the relative appeal of cars in a specific market.
The IEA points to rapid technology progress and concerns about battery health and major repair costs as factors behind weaker retention for three-year-old electric cars in China in 2024. It does not establish that any one used EV requires a battery replacement. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026
How should you compare EV ownership costs?
Use the same period and a similar vehicle class, then make the assumptions visible. A comparison that uses different mileage, ownership length, or resale expectations can make one powertrain look cheaper for reasons unrelated to the car itself.

- Set the comparison: Choose the ownership period, annual mileage, location, and vehicle class. Compare a new EV with a similar new gasoline vehicle, or compare used cars with used cars.
- Use the actual acquisition costs: Include the price you expect to pay, financing costs, taxes and fees, and incentives for which you qualify. Do not assume an incentive is available in every region or year.
- Estimate operating costs over that same period: Include electricity or fuel, maintenance, and insurance using assumptions appropriate to your driving and location.
- Estimate resale proceeds: Use evidence relevant to the model, age, mileage, and local market. Treat broad retention figures as context, not a vehicle-specific appraisal.
- Test a range of resale outcomes: Recalculate with a higher and lower resale estimate. If the result changes substantially, depreciation uncertainty is central to the decision.
- Check what any published TCO figure includes: For example, the IEA’s 2026 five-year comparisons include capital, financing, maintenance, and fuel costs, use country-specific annual mileage assumptions of 6,500 km to 17,500 km, and exclude subsidies and financial support. Other studies may use different components. IEA, Global EV Outlook 2026
Lower energy or routine maintenance costs can offset some depreciation, but they do not by themselves prove that an EV costs less overall. The result depends on the purchase price, financing, resale value, usage, and market-specific costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a used EV cheaper to own than a new car?
It can be, but a used-EV comparison is different from comparing a new EV with a new gasoline car. A used vehicle’s lower purchase price may reduce the amount at risk from future depreciation; its age, mileage, condition, remaining warranty, and expected resale price also differ. Compare the used EV with a similar used alternative over the same period and account for those differences.

A University of Michigan Center for Sustainable Systems study analyzed 260,000 U.S. vehicle listings collected from January through December 2024. In its comparison, buying a three-year-old BEV midsize SUV instead of a new midsize SUV produced estimated seven-year total ownership cost savings of about $13,000. The study reported different results for other powertrains, so this figure applies to that specific analysis—not to every used EV, buyer, or market.
