A crypto card usually lets you pay through the ordinary card network while the card provider handles the crypto conversion behind the scenes. The merchant is generally paid in local fiat currency—not in bitcoin, ether, or another cryptoasset. Depending on the card, conversion may happen before you shop, when you load a fiat balance, or when you make a purchase.
What happens when you pay with a crypto card?
- You present the card. You tap, insert, or otherwise use the card credential through the merchant’s normal card-acceptance system.
- The card program determines the funding source. It may draw from fiat you loaded in advance, or it may sell enough of a linked crypto balance to fund the purchase.
- The crypto is converted on the customer or provider side. In a debit-style arrangement, the issuer may sell the equivalent amount of cryptocurrency from a connected wallet. This is a general description; it does not mean every card makes an on-chain sale at the instant you tap.
- The merchant receives fiat through the card network. Visa describes the merchant receiving payment in the local currency in which its business operates. Mastercard likewise describes fiat moving across the card network. The merchant ordinarily does not receive the cardholder’s crypto as payment. Visa’s crypto-linked card explanation and Mastercard Europe’s 2026 explainer describe these mechanics.
When is the crypto converted?
Before the purchase: sell crypto and preload fiat
Some prepaid or preload programs require you to sell crypto first and add the proceeds to a fiat balance. The card then spends from that balance, much like a conventional prepaid card. You may need to manage the conversion and top-up before you reach the checkout.
At the point of sale: fund the purchase from crypto
Other programs let you pay from a linked crypto balance and convert enough to cover the purchase as it is made. The card provider or its partners handle the sale and the card-network payment. Visa documents both pre-conversion and point-of-sale approaches; the timing depends on the program, not on a universal rule for crypto cards. Check the named provider’s current terms to confirm which approach applies.
“Crypto card” can mean different card structures
The label does not by itself tell you whether the card sells your crypto at checkout. Mastercard describes several structures:

- Trusted by 6 million users worldwide (4.9 App Store, 4.8 Google Play) - buy, sell, swap, stake, and spend cryptocurrency directly. The secure offline storage wallet designed for how people actually use crypto wallets
- Debit-style: existing crypto may be sold to fund spending.
- Prepaid: you may need to convert crypto and top up a fiat balance in advance.
- Credit: the card lends fiat; crypto may be offered as a reward rather than used to fund the purchase.
- Secured credit: crypto may serve as collateral for credit. That does not necessarily mean the collateral is sold for each transaction.
In particular, earning crypto rewards on a credit-card purchase is different from paying for that purchase by converting your own crypto balance. See Mastercard Europe’s overview of crypto-card types.
What affects the amount deducted?
Explicit fees and conversion spread
A provider may charge a stated transaction fee, but that is not the only possible conversion cost. The exchange rate used to sell crypto can differ from a market reference price; that difference is called a spread. Mastercard notes that a spread can create a cost even when a provider advertises no transaction fee. Visa says fees are set by the issuing bank or crypto exchange, so check the provider’s fee details and conversion terms rather than treating “zero fee” as proof that conversion costs nothing. Visa and Mastercard explain that fees and pricing depend on the program.

Authorization and settlement
A transaction can be authorized before it is finally settled, and the amount ultimately debited may be affected by the card’s rules during that interval. For example, the OKX card terms published in 2026 say its transactions are authorized and settled in fiat and that the final stablecoin debit can change with exchange-rate movements between authorization and settlement. That is an issuer-specific example, not a rule for every crypto card.
Merchant currency versus card-account currency
Crypto-to-fiat conversion is separate from foreign-exchange conversion. If the merchant charges in a currency different from the one used by your card account, another currency conversion may apply. The applicable rate and any fee depend on the card program and transaction; there is no universal FX fee or rate established for crypto cards.

Which crypto is spent, and who controls it?
Supported assets and spending controls vary. Some programs may let you choose which asset to spend or set a priority order if one balance is insufficient. Custody also differs: an exchange-linked provider may hold and sell assets for you, while a self-custody setup may leave key control and transaction approval with you. These are possible program features, not standard capabilities of every card. Confirm supported assets, spending order, custody, and approval requirements in the provider’s current terms.
