Credit card interest can accrue day by day, while your minimum payment is an account-specific amount that usually pays down only part of what you owe. The exact cost and payoff time depend on each balance’s APR, the issuer’s calculation method and minimum-payment formula, when payments post, and whether you add charges or fees. Your statement and cardholder agreement—not a universal rule of thumb—provide the figures needed to understand your account.
How interest is calculated on a credit card balance
Your APR is an annual rate, but an issuer may calculate interest daily. It may convert the APR into a daily periodic rate and apply that rate to a daily balance, or use an average daily balance for the billing cycle. The agreement defines which method applies, including whether interest compounds.

A daily periodic rate is the rate used for each day’s balance. Issuers may calculate it by dividing the APR by 360 or 365; the denominator depends on the issuer. Do not assume APR divided by 365 is universal. The CFPB’s explanation of daily periodic rates describes this 360-or-365 distinction, while its credit card contract definitions illustrate daily and average-daily-balance methods, including variations with and without compounding.

In practical terms, an APR alone is not enough to determine the interest on a large balance. You also need to know which balance the rate applies to, how the issuer measures that balance during the cycle, and how the account treats accrued interest. A statement may show a balance and an interest charge, but the agreement explains the underlying method. Two cards with the same APR can therefore have different account terms, and two balances on the same card can accrue interest at different rates.

Why payment timing matters
The balance can change during a billing cycle as purchases, payments, credits, and fees post. With a daily-balance method, a payment that posts earlier can reduce the balance used to calculate interest on later days. Under a compounding method, previously accrued interest may be added to the balance used for a later day’s calculation. The effect depends on your account’s terms and when transactions are credited; a payment’s initiation date may not be the date it is credited.
For how interest can relate to the period between a billing date and payment, see the CFPB’s explanation of interest timing when a balance is paid by its due date. If you are trying to understand a specific charge, compare the statement’s billing-cycle dates and payment crediting information with the method described in your agreement. A payment made earlier may help reduce later interest, but it does not erase interest that has already accrued or guarantee a particular savings amount.
Different types of balances may have different rates
Purchases, balance transfers, cash advances, and promotional balances may be tracked separately and charged at different APRs. Your statement should group balances by rate, and the agreement describes the applicable rates and calculation method. A purchase grace period, when available, generally applies to new purchases and may be lost while you carry a balance. Check your terms rather than assuming every transaction receives the same rate or grace period. The CFPB explains these distinctions in its guide to how card issuers calculate interest.

- Find the balance-by-APR section. Note each balance category, its balance, and its APR. Keep promotional, purchase, transfer, and cash-advance balances separate. If a transaction category is unclear, check the agreement’s definitions rather than assuming it is treated as a purchase.
- Record the minimum due and due date. These are the amount and deadline for the current cycle. Paying at least the minimum on time helps avoid late fees and other consequences described in your agreement. Check how and when the issuer credits payments, especially if you are scheduling one close to the deadline.
- Read the repayment disclosures. Covered statements generally show an estimate of how long repayment would take and the total cost if you make only minimum payments. When applicable, they also show an estimated monthly payment, total cost, and savings for a 36-month repayment plan.
- Check the agreement for calculation and allocation rules. Look for the daily periodic rate, balance method, compounding terms, minimum-payment formula, and rules for allocating payments among balances. These details help explain why the payment may not reduce every balance in the same way.
- For promotional balances, confirm the end date and conditions. Identify whether the offer is deferred interest, what amount must be paid by the deadline, and how payments are allocated before that deadline.
The statement disclosures are estimates, not a guarantee of your actual payoff date. The required repayment estimate generally assumes that you add no new balance; exceptions apply. New purchases, fees, changes in rates, and payment timing can make your real result differ. The CFPB’s Regulation Z statement requirements and explanation of the three-year repayment box describe how to interpret these disclosures.
The three-year amount is a comparison point, not a required payment and not a promise that the account will be paid off in three years if you keep using it. The statement estimate is based on specified assumptions, including no additional balance being added. If your planned payment is lower than that estimate, compare the likely time and cost with the minimum-payment estimate; if it is higher, the actual result still depends on your card’s rates, fees, and terms.

Your issuer sets the minimum-payment formula. It may use a percentage of the balance, a fixed floor, interest or fees, delinquency, or special balance terms. There is no single formula that applies to every card. The account agreement and statement control what you owe in a given cycle.
For example, the CFPB’s current regulatory sample uses a minimum equal to 2% of the outstanding balance or $20, whichever is greater. That is an example used for repayment-disclosure calculations, not a standard formula or a claim about what issuers generally charge. The CFPB’s Appendix M2 sample calculations show the example, and Appendix M1 sets out requirements for repayment disclosures.
A minimum payment keeps your account current when paid on time, but it is not designed to clear a large balance quickly. If your balance is accruing interest, paying only the minimum can stretch repayment over years and cost more in interest than paying more. Regulation Z requires a minimum-payment warning on covered statements. Its required wording begins: “Minimum Payment Warning: If you make only the minimum payment each period, you will pay more in interest and it will take you longer to pay off your balance;”

The minimum is a floor for the current billing cycle, not an amount that guarantees a particular rate of progress toward paying off principal. Depending on the formula, part of the payment may go toward interest, fees, or other amounts before it reduces the balance. When a large balance is involved, even a payment that looks substantial in dollars may leave a significant balance accruing interest. Use the account’s disclosed formula and payoff estimates rather than assuming that the minimum is a fixed share of principal.
What happens when you pay more than the minimum
Paying more than the minimum generally reduces the balance faster and lowers interest compared with making only minimum payments, assuming other factors are unchanged. If you have balances at different APRs, the allocation rules matter: the amount you pay above the minimum generally must go first to the balance with the highest APR. The issuer generally decides how to allocate the minimum-payment portion. Review your agreement and statement if you want to know how a payment will affect each balance.
This distinction matters when you have a low-rate promotional balance alongside a higher-rate purchase or cash-advance balance. Paying more than the minimum generally targets the highest-rate balance first, but you should not assume that the minimum portion is allocated the same way. If you are comparing two payment plans, look at the amount above the minimum and which balance it will reduce, as well as the rates attached to all remaining balances.
When weighing a payment amount, compare it with the 36-month payment estimate on your statement, if one is provided. That figure is a useful reference, not an individualized guarantee: the estimate generally assumes no new charges, and your actual outcome depends on rates, fees, payment dates, and account terms.
How deferred-interest offers can create a surprise charge
A deferred-interest offer is not necessarily the same as an offer where interest simply stops accruing. Under a deferred-interest arrangement, failing to pay the required balance by the stated deadline can trigger interest accrued during the promotional period, subject to the offer’s terms. Before relying on a promotional rate, identify the payoff deadline, the amount that must be paid, and how the issuer allocates payments. The CFPB explains this risk in its guidance on credit cards promising no interest if paid in full within a set period.

Do not treat the promotional APR or a low minimum as evidence that the offer will be cost-free. Confirm the exact payoff date and the balance that must be cleared to meet the offer’s terms, then consider how payments are applied while the offer is active. If you have other balances on the card, ask the issuer how payment allocation works rather than assuming that your payment will go entirely to the deferred-interest amount.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to estimate your own payoff responsibly
A tailored payoff estimate requires more than your total card balance. Gather each balance and APR, the issuer’s minimum-payment formula, the payment amount and posting date, and assumptions about future purchases, fees, and rate changes. If your issuer offers an online payoff tool, verify that its inputs reflect the same terms and assumptions.
- Separate every balance with a different APR or promotional condition.
- Use the minimum-payment formula in your agreement rather than assuming a fixed percentage.
- Decide whether you will add charges, incur fees, or make payments earlier than the due date.
- Compare your planned payment with the statement’s 36-month estimate where available.
Without those inputs, a precise payoff date or interest total would be misleading. The CFPB’s $1,000 example is a regulatory worked example—not a typical balance or a population statistic—and should not be treated as a prediction for your account. No named, current official statistic establishes a typical amount of interest paid or payoff time for people carrying large balances.
For a useful comparison, hold your assumptions steady: use the same future-spending assumption and payment timing when comparing possible payment amounts. If the assumptions change—because you add purchases, pay earlier, encounter fees, or the APR changes—the estimate changes too. The statement’s repayment disclosures can orient you, but they do not replace an estimate built from your actual balance categories and account terms.
If the required payment is becoming difficult
Prioritize making at least the minimum by the due date when you can, and contact your issuer if you expect trouble paying. If you need outside help, look for a reputable credit-counseling provider and verify its credentials, fees, and services before enrolling; do not assume a provider is endorsed by a government agency. The information here explains card terms, but it cannot determine which assistance program is appropriate for your circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does my credit card company calculate the amount of interest I owe?
Many issuers calculate interest daily using a daily balance or average daily balance method. Your account may have separate purchase, transfer, cash-advance, and promotional balances at different APRs. Check the agreement for the calculation method and your statement for balances grouped by rate.
What is a daily periodic rate on a credit card?
It is the daily rate used to calculate interest against a daily balance. Issuers may divide the APR by 360 or 365, so APR divided by 365 is not a universal rule. Your card terms specify the method.
How is my minimum payment calculated?
The formula depends on your account and may involve a percentage, a fixed minimum, interest or fees, delinquency, or special balance terms. The CFPB’s sample of 2% of the outstanding balance or $20, whichever is greater, is an example for regulatory repayment disclosures—not a standard formula. Check your statement and agreement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will paying only the minimum pay off my card?
It can, but repayment may take years and cost more in interest than paying more when the balance is accruing interest. Covered statements generally estimate payoff time and cost at minimum payments and, when applicable, show a 36-month comparison. Those estimates assume no additional balance is added and are not a promise if you keep using the card.
How are payments applied if I have balances at multiple APRs?
The portion of a payment above the minimum generally goes first to the balance with the highest APR. Issuers generally choose how to allocate the minimum-payment portion. Check your agreement and statement for account-specific details.
Can a no-interest offer still cost interest?
Yes. With deferred interest, failing to pay the required balance by the deadline can trigger interest accrued during the offer period, subject to its terms. Confirm the deadline, payoff amount, and payment-allocation rules with the issuer.
The Bottom Line
There is no single interest calculation or minimum-payment formula for every credit card. Read the balance-by-APR table, due date, repayment estimates, and agreement; pay at least the minimum on time, and compare any larger planned payment with the 36-month estimate. Your actual payoff depends on payment timing, new charges, fees, rates, and the terms for each balance.
