Copper changes the cost of an important input and may also raise the selling prices recorded as revenue. Housing construction can influence demand for building wire, but permits, starts and completions do not translate directly into same-period cable shipments. To judge performance, separate metal-driven sales changes from actual volume, margins, operating costs and cash flow.
How does copper reach a cable company’s earnings?
A cable manufacturer buys copper and other materials, converts them into products, and sells those products to distributors or directly to customers. The earnings effect depends not just on the market price of copper, but on when the company buys it, how its sales are priced, how quickly customer prices adjust, and whether it can preserve its conversion margin—the value it adds by manufacturing and delivering the finished product.

Purchasing costs and customer price recovery do not move in lockstep
Companies may sell using published price lists, metal-index clauses, or negotiated customer terms. Those arrangements determine whether higher material costs can be recovered and how quickly. Belden’s FY2025 SEC filing says most of its products are sold through distribution using published price lists, with announced changes typically taking effect weeks later. Some original-equipment-manufacturer contracts pass raw-material changes through with lags generally ranging from a few weeks to three months.
That timing creates exposure between a change in input costs and a change in customer prices. If copper becomes more expensive before selling prices catch up, the company may temporarily absorb some of the increase. Recovery is not automatic: Belden warns that prices may not be increased promptly or sufficiently, and that raising prices more than competitors can cost the company sales. The outcome depends on contract language, customer negotiations and competitive conditions, not on the copper quote alone.

Higher selling prices can lift revenue while lowering gross-margin percentage
When a manufacturer passes higher copper costs through, the dollar selling price of a cable can rise even if the company ships no additional product. Reported revenue may therefore increase without corresponding growth in underlying volume. At the same time, the copper component can make the selling price larger relative to the profit earned on the product, reducing gross profit as a percentage of sales even when the company has recovered much of the cost increase.
Belden has cautioned that there is no exact company-wide measure of the effect of changing commodity prices: thousands of transactions have different terms and pricing factors. A reported copper impact should therefore be treated as an estimate under the issuer’s definitions, not as precise causal accounting. A revenue increase alone does not show that demand strengthened or that earnings improved.
Falling copper prices can reverse the sales effect, but not on a perfect timetable
If copper costs fall and customer prices adjust downward, nominal revenue can decline even when shipment volumes are steady. The effect on profit depends on the purchase and sales timing, contract mechanics, competitive pricing and inventory on hand. Inventory accounting can matter as well. Encore Wire’s historical filing describes inventory costing and lower-of-cost-or-market adjustments; falling copper prices or a reduction in inventory quantities can affect reported results.

The market price, the company’s actual purchase basis, the material embedded in inventory, the customer’s pricing terms and any disclosed hedging can each affect when a change appears in financial statements and cash flow.

Why can reported sales differ from underlying cable demand?
The clearest way to read a cable maker’s top line is to distinguish sales at current metal prices from sales recalculated using a consistent metal-price assumption. The second measure can help show performance apart from the copper and aluminum value embedded in products, although companies define and label these measures differently. It is not a standardized industry accounting measure.
Nexans shows the scale of the difference in its 2025 results
For FY2025, Nexans reported €7,810 million of sales at current metal prices and €6,098 million of standard-metal-price sales. Its standard-price convention assumes copper at €5,000 per tonne and aluminum at €1,200 per tonne. Against that standard-sales measure, Nexans reported adjusted EBITDA of €728 million, equal to 11.9% of standard sales. The standard prices are Nexans’ reporting convention for this period, not a universal benchmark for comparing all cable manufacturers.

The comparison makes the accounting point visible: the current-metal figure is €1,712 million above the standard-metal figure, but that gap is not additional cable volume or profit. Nor does the difference by itself identify how much of a period’s earnings change copper caused. The company’s definitions and other operating disclosures are needed to interpret the figures.

Not every manufacturer publishes the same metal-adjusted sales figure, uses the same standard price, or defines exposure over the same businesses and period. When comparing issuers, first identify the reported sales basis and the company’s own denominator for margins. Then look for shipments, orders or other volume evidence, and read it alongside operating profit measures. If definitions, currencies, fiscal periods or segment scope differ, apparent differences in metal exposure may not be comparable.

How does housing activity translate into cable demand?
Residential construction uses building wire and related electrical products, so stronger building activity can support demand. But a housing statistic is not the same thing as a cable maker’s orders or shipments. The timing varies with when builders procure materials, how distributors stock products, and whether a manufacturer sells directly or through a channel. No universal lag from a housing indicator to cable-company revenue is established by the available company disclosures.
Permits, starts, construction and completions describe different stages

The Census Bureau’s New Residential Construction release is the appropriate official source for U.S. permits, starts, units under construction and completions. The release page available in July 2026 showed data for that month; figures can be revised, so the latest published vintage matters when relating housing activity to company results.
Company shipment history is evidence of volume, not proof of a housing cause
Encore Wire reported that its copper-wire pounds shipped increased 7.9% in 2022 compared with 2021, after rising 10.8% in 2021 compared with 2020 and declining 5.4% in 2020 compared with 2019. These are company-specific historical shipment figures. They show why volume disclosures are useful alongside reported sales, but they do not establish that housing caused those changes or provide a current housing-to-earnings relationship.
For an observed period, compare the company’s shipment or order evidence with the relevant housing data and the issuer’s explanation of demand. Keep the distinction between a plausible demand driver and a demonstrated cause: other markets, channel inventories, timing and product mix may also account for a change.

When can other markets outweigh residential construction?
Housing is only one possible demand source, and its importance depends on a company’s products and geographic mix. Low-voltage building wire is more directly connected to construction than transmission cable for grid projects, for example. Commercial and industrial building, data centers, utilities, renewable-energy infrastructure and electrification investment can contribute demand through different product lines and project cycles.
Nexans’ acquisition rationale for Republic Wire described sustained demand across residential, commercial and data-center expansion as drivers of the U.S. low-voltage market. It cited a market estimate of about €12 billion from Roland Berger in February 2026. That figure is Roland Berger’s estimate as reported by Nexans, for the stated U.S. low-voltage market scope; it is not Nexans’ own measure of the whole cable market or an estimate of its addressable sales.
Nexans’ H1 2026 results, published on 29 July 2026, also highlighted transmission and grid activity, operational efficiency and high-value solutions. Its CEO, Julien Hueber, said the first-half performance reflected “continued disciplined execution” amid structural electrification drivers. That is management’s characterization of company performance, not independent proof that any one end market caused the result. The practical implication is to examine segment disclosures rather than infer group-wide earnings from residential indicators alone.
How should you analyze a cable company’s earnings?
Use a bridge from costs and customer recovery to volume, margins and cash. This prevents a metal-related change in revenue from being mistaken for stronger demand and keeps housing indicators in context.

- Identify the company’s exposure. Note the relevant product segments, geographic markets and customer channels. Distinguish building wire from grid, transmission, industrial or other businesses that follow different demand drivers.
- Read the metal-price basis. Check whether the issuer reports sales at current metal prices, standard metal prices or another adjusted measure. Record the assumed copper and aluminum prices, the fiscal period and the definition used.
- Check purchasing and pass-through terms. Look for price-list timing, index clauses, negotiated contracts and any disclosed lag. Consider whether the company says competitive pressure limits the recovery of higher costs.
- Separate price from volume and mix. Compare revenue with shipment quantities, orders or other disclosed volume measures. Determine whether the mix shifted toward products, customers or regions with different economics.
- Follow the margin and operating bridge. Review gross margin, conversion economics, plant utilization, efficiency and operating costs. A change in copper’s value does not explain these factors on its own.
- Check cash and accounting timing. Read disclosures on inventory, working capital, hedges and inventory valuation. These can shift the timing or presentation of cash and earnings relative to spot prices.
- Align the comparison period. Use the same fiscal period and geography where possible, and note acquisitions, foreign exchange and changes in capacity or competition before attributing an earnings change to copper or housing.
This approach is more reliable than adding a market copper move to revenue or EBITDA, or treating a change in housing starts as a fixed earnings multiplier. The relevant figures are the ones tied to the issuer’s own contracts, volumes, operating disclosures and accounting presentation.
What do company disclosures establish—and what do they not?
Company filings and results can establish how a particular issuer describes its pricing arrangements, shipments, reporting conventions and named period effects. They do not automatically establish an industry-wide relationship. Belden’s FY2025 pass-through disclosure is specific to its business and contracts; Encore Wire’s shipment data are historical; Nexans’ standard metal prices and exposure effects apply to its own stated periods and definitions.
The available disclosures do not establish a sector-wide coefficient connecting housing starts or copper prices to cable-company earnings. They also do not support a universal timing rule between a permit, a start, a cable order and recognized revenue. Any forward-looking conclusion therefore needs company-specific evidence and should account for shifts in utilization, pricing discipline, competition, product mix, acquisitions, currency and working capital, in addition to commodity prices and construction activity.
