At launch, checkout covered one item at a time. It was an early, user-confirmed purchase flow—not permission for ChatGPT to spend money autonomously. OpenAI said more Shopify merchants, multi-item carts, and additional regions were planned.
What OpenAI launched—and what it did not
OpenAI’s announcement describes three related parts of a shopping experience. They are not interchangeable:
- Shopping discovery: A user describes what they want, and ChatGPT suggests products. A product appearing in results does not mean it can be purchased in the chat.
- Instant Checkout: For eligible listings, the user can review order details and complete a purchase inside ChatGPT.
- Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP): The technical standard OpenAI says it co-developed with Stripe to pass commerce and payment information between AI agents and merchant systems.
The distinction matters: product suggestions may be broader than the set of listings that support in-chat checkout. OpenAI’s launch announcement is the source for the launch details and its descriptions of the system: OpenAI’s Instant Checkout announcement.
Who could use Instant Checkout at launch?

OpenAI also said that more than one million Shopify merchants were coming soon and named Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori as examples of brands expected to join. That was an announced expansion, not confirmation that every named brand or all of those merchants were immediately live.

How an in-chat purchase works
- Ask for a product. Describe what you need, including constraints such as budget, size, or intended use. ChatGPT can return product recommendations.
- Check whether the listing supports checkout. A recommendation can be shown without an in-chat Buy option.
- Select the product and tap Buy. Review the item and the order details ChatGPT presents, including shipping and payment information.
- Confirm the purchase. The user must explicitly authorize the transaction; the launch was not an unrestricted automatic-buying service.
- The merchant handles the order. The seller can accept or decline it, then remains responsible for payment processing, fulfillment, returns, and customer support.
Check the exact seller, item variant, quantity, final price, shipping cost, delivery estimate, and return terms before confirming. Inventory or order conditions can change, and the merchant may not accept an order. Keep the order confirmation and contact the merchant about fulfillment, cancellations, or returns.
What the Agentic Commerce Protocol is for
ACP is a structured communication layer, not a consumer shopping app or another name for the Buy button. OpenAI says it is an open standard co-developed with Stripe to let AI agents and merchant systems exchange product, order, payment, and fulfillment information. The aim is to connect to existing commerce infrastructure rather than require every merchant to replace its backend.
For merchants, a common protocol could make it easier for an AI interface to request a purchase through existing systems while the merchant retains control of the customer relationship and post-purchase work. OpenAI’s announcement describes the protocol’s intended role; it does not establish how broadly businesses beyond the announced participants have adopted it.

Stripe’s role—and what it does not mean
Stripe helped develop ACP and powered the payment and tokenization infrastructure used for Instant Checkout. OpenAI said Stripe merchants could enable agentic payments with as little as one line of code. Merchants using other processors could participate through Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or ACP’s Delegated Payments Specification, so the announcement did not make Stripe a required processor for every merchant.
OpenAI says payment tokens are encrypted and authorized for specific merchants and amounts. It also says only information needed to complete an order is shared with the user’s permission. These are descriptions of the system’s stated design, not an independent security audit or a guarantee that payment or privacy risks are impossible.
Who handles the transaction, fees, and product rankings?
The merchant remains responsible after checkout
Buying inside ChatGPT does not make OpenAI the seller. The merchant remains responsible for accepting the order and handling payment, fulfillment, returns, and customer service. Before buying, check the seller’s own policies and keep the confirmation details in case you need help.

Free to shoppers; merchant fee undisclosed
OpenAI said Instant Checkout is free for users and that merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases. The launch announcement does not disclose a percentage or a full merchant pricing schedule, so a specific commission rate cannot be inferred from it.
Ranking claims are OpenAI’s, not an independent audit
OpenAI said product results are organic and unsponsored and that checkout availability alone does not preferentially raise a product’s ranking. When several merchants sell the same product, the company said it considers factors including availability, price, quality, whether the merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled. The announcement provides neither a detailed ranking formula nor independent testing, so treat these as OpenAI’s stated policies rather than independently verified guarantees.
What shoppers should weigh
Potential convenience
Conversational search can help turn a specific request—such as a gift within a budget or a product with particular features—into recommendations without opening several retailer pages. If an eligible item supports Instant Checkout, the user can continue to purchase without leaving the conversation.
Limits and due diligence
- Coverage: The launch footprint was limited to U.S. users and eligible products from U.S. Etsy sellers; a result is not proof that checkout is available.
- Market visibility: Recommendations do not establish that ChatGPT displays every relevant seller or the full market.
- Product fit: A conversational recommendation is not a guarantee of quality or suitability. Verify the exact size, color, dimensions, compatibility, and quantity.
- Total cost and timing: Review the final order amount, shipping, taxes, and delivery estimate before confirming.
- Seller policies: Etsy sellers may have different service and return policies. Check the specific seller’s terms rather than assuming a uniform marketplace policy.
- Payment and personal information: OpenAI describes limited, merchant- and amount-specific tokens and permission-based sharing, but users should still review what they authorize.
What merchants should evaluate
For a merchant, appearing in conversational product discovery could create another path to shoppers before they visit a search engine, marketplace, or store. ACP is intended to provide a way for an AI agent to communicate with commerce systems while the merchant retains order and fulfillment responsibilities. That opportunity comes with trade-offs:

- Visibility and control: ChatGPT mediates the initial discovery experience, making the merchant dependent on product selection and ranking behavior it does not control.
- Costs and attribution: OpenAI said merchants pay a fee on completed purchases but did not publish the rate in its announcement. Merchants also need to understand how to attribute conversions and assess the economics of orders originating in ChatGPT.
- Operational readiness: Catalog accuracy, current inventory and pricing, order acceptance, cancellations, returns, and customer support all matter when a purchase starts in an AI interface.
- Customer data and consent: Merchants should understand what information is passed, how consent is handled, and who answers the shopper’s questions after the sale.
- Integration choices: Stripe is central to the launch infrastructure, but OpenAI described routes for merchants using other processors. A merchant should assess the actual integration requirements rather than assume either that Stripe is mandatory or that no technical work is needed.
The announcement gives no conversion-rate results or guarantee of placement. Merchants should not treat participation as a promise of higher sales or automatic visibility.

It is agent-assisted commerce in a limited, practical sense: a user can state a shopping goal in natural language, ChatGPT can identify relevant products, and the system can coordinate a transaction with a merchant. But the launch retained meaningful human control. The user confirmed the purchase, the initial flow handled one item rather than a full cart, and the merchant controlled order acceptance and post-purchase service.
That makes “agentic” a description of the AI’s intermediary role—not evidence that ChatGPT could independently buy arbitrary products, manage an unrestricted shopping list, or spend without confirmation. OpenAI’s announced plans for multi-item carts and wider merchant and regional coverage were future directions, not capabilities to assume from the initial launch.

Why the launch matters for ecommerce
Instant Checkout tested a shift in the purchase path: instead of moving from search to a retailer’s site and then to checkout, a shopper could move from conversational intent to a product recommendation and an embedded purchase. For merchants, that could create a new discovery channel; for shoppers, it could reduce checkout friction on supported listings.
The launch alone does not show that ChatGPT displaced search engines, marketplaces, or retailer storefronts. Its initial merchant, geography, and basket limits make it an early commerce experiment. Its wider significance depends on whether more merchants adopt the protocol, whether shoppers trust AI-mediated recommendations, and how well merchants can manage transactions that begin in a chat.
