Why this is not a full league ranking
The published comparison covers 19 League One clubs, but provides a staff-cost or wage figure for only 14. It also mixes accounting years. A club’s number may refer to a different season from Charlton’s, and the measure is not necessarily defined identically across every entry. The table cannot establish a precise, like-for-like ranking of all League One clubs’ player wage bills.
Even within a common season, total staff costs and first-team wages answer different questions. Staff costs include more employees than players, while the club’s revenue base also matters when judging how affordable a payroll is.

What do player-wage estimates say?
