Café Coffee Day’s 2008–09 repositioning tried to solve a two-sided problem: keep its cafés approachable to young customers while giving coffee connoisseurs and more affluent patrons a reason to visit. A December 2025 excerpt from Coffee King: The Swift Rise and Sudden Death of Café Coffee Day Founder VG Siddhartha describes how consumer research, a new visual identity and distinct café formats were used to pursue both aims.
Why CCD reconsidered its positioning
By 2008–09, Café Coffee Day had built a pan-India presence, but competition was increasing. According to the book excerpt published by Scroll.in, CCD brought in CEO Alok Gupta and marketing president Bidisha Nagaraj in 2008, then commissioned Quantum Consumer Solutions to study its customers and future audience. The questions included who the target group was, what the brand meant to them and whom CCD should serve next.
The challenge was to grow without making the brand feel exclusive. Founder VG Siddhartha wanted a café where people could come in everyday clothes, but one that would not be perceived as downmarket. Nagaraj recalled his wish to make coffee connoisseurs feel welcome too. As she put it, he wanted people to be comfortable in their “chappals” and not to feel intimidated by what they were wearing.
How the youth focus shaped the rebrand
The excerpt says Quantum’s research identified youth as the central high-volume audience and reported that 60 per cent of India’s population comprised youth. The excerpt does not give the underlying report or its year, so that figure describes what the book says Quantum found; it is not a current demographic estimate.

CCD’s response was not simply to make the brand younger. The rebrand aimed to shift its image from a comfortable meeting place toward a venue for more evolved conversations while keeping its approachable character. CCD hired Landor for brand strategy and design. The resulting purple-and-red dialogue-box logo was approved after nearly three months of work and, according to the excerpt, unveiled at the Indiranagar outlet in Bengaluru in October 2009 before being introduced across Indian cafés over the following months.
The redesign also removed the coffee leaf from the previous logo. The book excerpt says CCD wanted to present itself as a café business with room to grow beyond coffee, rather than define the brand solely by the drink. Lulu Raghavan, who was involved in the Landor work, called the change “a very progressive step.”

Three café formats, three customer propositions
Rather than ask one café format to serve every customer in the same way, CCD layered higher-end experiences alongside its standard café. In the historical account, each format addressed a different combination of audience, ambience, menu, price and placement.
| Format | Intended audience | Ambience and offer | Price and placement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard CCD café | Youth-oriented customers seeking an accessible place to meet. | Kept the familiar, approachable café proposition. | The excerpt characterizes it as accessible; it gives no price figures or specific placement rules. |
| CCD Lounge | Customers who had graduated from college and wanted a different atmosphere. | Quieter and more upmarket, with a more sophisticated coffee menu and customizable sandwiches. | Higher-priced than the standard café, according to the excerpt; placement helped signal the difference, but specific locations are not stated. |
| CCD Square | Coffee aficionados interested in single-origin coffee. | High-end, private-club atmosphere with a focus on specialty coffee. | Described as a deliberately limited format; the excerpt gives no price figures or specific placement rules. |
The formats were meant to help CCD retain customers as their preferences changed, rather than force a choice between mass appeal and premium cues. The distinction depended on more than menu pricing: a quieter setting, specialized coffee and the placement of a café could help make a higher-end offer legible. But explaining that difference was difficult. K Ramakrishnan, later CCD marketing president, recalled: “It was extremely difficult to communicate that this was something different.”

What the strategy reveals—and what the account establishes
CCD’s approach, as narrated in the book excerpt, was to separate customer experiences while keeping them under one brand. Youth research informed the core audience; the visual identity sought to signal a more contemporary café; and Lounge and Square gave customers distinct reasons to trade up or seek a more specialized visit. The historical account presents these moves as a response to growth and competition, not as evidence that the strategy succeeded by any particular financial measure.
The details here come from a December 10, 2025, Scroll.in excerpt of Rukmini Rao and Prosenjit Datta’s Coffee King: The Swift Rise and Sudden Death of Café Coffee Day Founder VG Siddhartha, published by Pan Macmillan. The excerpt recounts the strategy but does not supply the original Quantum report, independently verifiable company records, or current information about CCD’s café formats. It is therefore best read as a historical account of the brand’s intended positioning, not a guide to present-day operations.
