BYD’s May 2025 price cuts on more than 20 models intensified China’s auto price war, but they did not wipe out local rivals. BYD still sold 4.6 million vehicles in 2025, yet its growth slowed sharply, and Geely and Leapmotor were among the competitors challenging it in budget cars. The evidence points to a fierce contest that has put pressure on automakers’ profits—not a settled BYD victory.
What BYD’s price cuts did—and did not—show
In May 2025, BYD cut prices on more than 20 models. The move triggered a selloff across Chinese auto stocks, according to Reuters, illustrating how much concern the discounts caused across the industry. It does not, by itself, show that competitors were driven out of the market or establish how much cheaper any particular BYD model became.

The cuts were part of a broader price war that Reuters dates to 2023. In a market with excess production capacity and rising inventory, lower prices can help attract buyers, but they can also make it harder for manufacturers and dealers to protect margins. The reporting available here does not provide a like-for-like comparison of current BYD and rival model prices, so it cannot support a precise claim that BYD is the cheapest choice in a given vehicle class.
BYD kept growing in 2025, but momentum weakened
Full-year sales rose at a slower pace
BYD’s full-year 2025 vehicle sales increased 7.73% to 4.6 million, Reuters reported. That was the company’s weakest annual growth rate in five years. The figure covers total vehicle sales; it should not be confused with battery-electric-only sales or sales in China alone.

Monthly and early-2026 results showed further pressure
Reuters reported that BYD’s total vehicle sales in December 2025 fell 18.3% year over year, extending the decline to a fourth consecutive month. In a separate reporting window, the Associated Press said BYD sold 400,241 vehicles in January and February 2026, down 36% year over year. These figures describe different periods and should not be treated as a single annual result.
BYD’s 2025 financial results also showed the tension between maintaining sales and protecting earnings. The Associated Press reported revenue of 804 billion yuan for 2025, up 3.5%, and profit of 32.6 billion yuan, down 19%. Sales growth alone, therefore, did not mean profit was growing at the same pace.

Geely and Leapmotor are challenging BYD in budget cars
Reuters’ January 2026 reporting identified Geely and Leapmotor as rivals challenging BYD in the budget segment. The Associated Press later described Geely as gaining ground in early 2026. That makes “decimates local competition” too strong: the reports describe a changing contest in which BYD faced pressure even after a large expansion in sales.
The available reporting does not give a comparable current market-share table or model-by-model price test for BYD, Geely and Leapmotor. It therefore does not establish a precise ranking of those companies by market share, nor which brand offers the lowest price for a comparable car. The supported comparison is narrower: rivals were gaining traction in the budget segment while BYD’s domestic demand weakened.
The price war is squeezing the wider industry
The pressure is not unique to BYD. Reuters reported that the median net margin for China’s automaker sector was 0.83% in 2024, compared with 2.7% in 2019. Combined industry inventory reached 370 billion yuan in 2024, more than double its 2019 level. Those are sector-wide figures, not BYD-specific results.
Thin margins and large inventories help explain why discounts can spread: manufacturers have incentives to move cars, while repeated price cuts can make profitability harder to sustain. BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu described the conditions this way in the company’s earnings report, as quoted by the Associated Press: “We also recognize that competition in the NEV (new energy vehicle) industry has reached a fever pitch, and is undergoing a brutal ‘knockout stage’.” That is Wang’s characterization of the market, not an independent finding that rivals have been eliminated.

Exports are growing, but had not offset domestic weakness in the reported period
BYD has been expanding overseas. Reuters reported that its exports rose 65% year over year in January–May 2026. Over that same five-month period, however, the company’s overall deliveries fell by more than 20%. The measures are not interchangeable: export growth concerns overseas sales, while the delivery decline covers BYD overall.

What this means for car buyers and personal finances
A price war can create opportunities for buyers, but a headline discount is not enough to identify the best-value car. The figures cited here do not reveal current transaction prices or the cost of a particular model. Anyone comparing vehicles should check the current price and terms for the specific model and location, then weigh the full ownership cost against alternatives rather than assuming the lowest advertised price is the cheapest over time.
