Bristol City reported £35.9 million in staff costs for 2024/25, against revenue of £40.3 million. That put staff costs at 89% of revenue and ranked the club 14th among 20 Championship clubs with wage data in Salary Sport’s comparison. The ranking uses clubs’ latest filed accounts, so it is indicative rather than a like-for-like comparison of one season.
What Bristol City reported in 2024/25
Salary Sport’s Championship accounts comparison lists Bristol City’s 2024/25 revenue as £40,337,817 and its staff costs as £35,915,560. The resulting staff-cost-to-revenue ratio is 89%. Its table also records a £19 million pre-tax loss for the club. Salary Sport’s comparison identifies Bristol City’s season as 2024/25.
A separate dashboard from Kinnaird Sports Intelligence gives broadly similar rounded revenue and wage figures, but reports an £18.6 million loss after tax and a sixth-place league finish. The loss figures use different tax bases: £19 million is pre-tax, while £18.6 million is after tax. They should not be treated as interchangeable. Kinnaird’s dashboard attributes its figures to published club accounts and Kinnaird Analytics.
Where Bristol City ranks on wages to revenue
By staff costs as a share of revenue, Bristol City is 14th in Salary Sport’s ordered list of 20 clubs for which it has wage-bill data. In that subset, 13 clubs have a higher ratio and six have a lower one. The ranking is about the proportion of revenue accounted for by staff costs—not the size of the club’s payroll in pounds.

The distinction matters: a club with greater revenue can spend more in absolute terms while using a smaller share of its income. Conversely, a high ratio signals that staff costs take up a larger portion of reported revenue, but it does not by itself establish whether a club is financially healthy, efficient or successful on the pitch.
How to read the comparison
- Absolute staff costs: Bristol City’s reported 2024/25 figure is £35,915,560. The comparison’s 14th-place ranking is not a ranking of absolute staff costs across every Championship club.
- Staff costs as a share of revenue: The club’s ratio is 89%, placing it 14th among the 20 clubs with wage data in the Salary Sport list.
- Reporting periods and coverage: The page includes revenue figures for 24 clubs but wage data for 20. It compares each club’s latest filed accounts, not a single common season. For example, its rows show Watford and Preston North End for 2023/24, Portsmouth for 2021/22, and Bristol City for 2024/25. These figures are not necessarily current-season budgets or current squad payrolls.
Salary Sport says the 24 clubs in its revenue dataset recorded £1.08 billion in turnover, while staff costs for the 20 clubs with wage data totalled £905 million. Those totals describe the page’s mixed-year dataset; they are not a synchronized set of accounts for one Championship season.

What “staff costs” means
The £35.9 million figure is best described as reported staff costs, not as first-team player wages alone. Salary Sport’s Bristol City detail page separates wages and salaries from social security and pension costs, showing that the accounts-based total covers more than a clean player-only payroll. The Bristol City detail page presents those cost categories separately.
Agent fees are another distinct expense. The Football Association’s 2024/25 disclosure lists Bristol City’s net agent fees at £1,305,087; that amount is not part of the staff-cost figure and should not be added to it as wages. The FA publishes the figures under its Football Agent Regulations and disclaims warranties of accuracy, reliability and completeness. The FA’s agent-fees disclosure explains the published figures.
