How Blockchain Analytics Traces Crypto Transactions and Wallets

Blockchain analytics maps public transactions, groups addresses that may share control, and uses off-chain evidence to attribute them. A cluster or risk score is not proof of identity.

Blockchain analytics traces crypto by reading public transaction records, grouping addresses that may share control, and using additional evidence to connect those groups to services or people. A blockchain can show where funds moved; it usually does not name the person behind an address. That distinction is why an analytics result is a lead or risk signal—not automatic proof of identity.

What blockchain analytics can—and cannot—show

On a public blockchain such as Bitcoin, transactions and their connections are recorded in a ledger that can be inspected after the fact. Analysts and specialist software turn those records into a transaction graph: addresses, transfers, amounts, timestamps, and, on smart-contract networks, contract interactions.

Most addresses are pseudonymous. Their histories may be visible, but an address does not inherently contain its user’s name or other civil identity. To connect an address to a named person or organization, an analyst needs evidence beyond the transaction record. Chainalysis and Elliptic explain this distinction in their blockchain analytics materials; Bitcoin.org’s privacy guidance also describes the public visibility of Bitcoin transactions.

  • On-chain evidence describes what the ledger records and how addresses or transactions relate.
  • Attribution evidence supports a claim about who controls an address or what service it belongs to.
  • Interpretation determines what a particular flow means for a defined investigation or compliance question.

These are separate steps. A plausible address grouping is not itself a confirmed identity, and a risk score is not a finding that a person has done something wrong.

How wallet clustering works

A wallet is software or a service that manages keys and interacts with a blockchain. Analysts usually observe addresses and transactions, not the wallet’s private keys or a definitive list of its owner’s addresses. Clustering is the process of grouping addresses that available evidence suggests may be under common control.

Blockchain model Examples of structural signals What the signal supports
UTXO, used by Bitcoin Addresses used together as inputs in one transaction (co-spending); change-address patterns A possible relationship between addresses, not proof that one person owns them. Chainalysis describes co-spending, and the U.S. Department of Justice’s 2021 practitioner article discusses change-address analysis.
Account-based, such as Ethereum Smart-contract relationships and links involving administrative keys A possible operational or control relationship. Chainalysis describes these as chain-specific attribution or clustering signals, not direct declarations of a human owner.

Clustering depends on heuristics: observable patterns that are useful in some circumstances but can fail in others. Shared inputs or similar behavior can support an inference, but the analyst must consider patterns that weaken it. The result should be treated as a likely relationship with a confidence level and rationale, not as certainty.

How an address cluster gets linked to a service or person

Attribution is the separate step of attaching a label—such as an exchange, payment service, or other entity—to an address or cluster. The blockchain itself does not supply that label. Analysts may combine on-chain patterns with evidence such as:

  • Addresses a service has publicly disclosed.
  • Publicly available information or observed interaction with a service.
  • Information from seized infrastructure or confirmation by a third party.
  • Customer or identity records, such as KYC information, obtained through legal process.
  • Other open-source intelligence (OSINT) that supports or challenges the proposed link.

Each source has limits. A published address may be outdated; an address can be used by a service on behalf of many customers; and information from an investigative source must be assessed for reliability and context. Chainalysis’s wallet-attribution explainer describes the use of off-chain evidence, while Elliptic’s analytics materials distinguish blockchain data from labels and other intelligence. A strong attribution claim depends on the evidence supporting it, not merely on the presence of an analytics label.

How investigators follow funds

Once analysts have a graph and relevant labels, they can follow transactions toward a defined question—for example, the source of a deposit, later destinations, or a possible point where funds reached a service. Tracing backward and forward can reveal connections, but it does not automatically establish who initiated a transfer or why.

Set a scope

A transaction graph can extend indefinitely. Investigators choose which transfers, time period, assets, and destinations matter to the question. A trace is more useful when the scope and stopping rules are explicit.

Account for pooled funds

When funds enter a service or wallet that combines many customers’ deposits, the ledger may show a later outgoing payment without identifying which particular incoming deposit funded it. Analysts must choose a method for deciding which outflows count as carrying the traced value. More than one method may be reasonable, so a defensible analysis records its assumptions and allows another analyst to reproduce the result. Elliptic’s blockchain-forensics explainer discusses this methodological issue.

Treat risk screening as triage

Analytics platforms can flag exposure to known entities or patterns and use scores to prioritize compliance review. Elliptic describes scoring as a way to direct review, not as a verdict that every flagged transaction is suspicious. Chainalysis also notes potential false positives, outdated labels, and emerging obfuscation techniques. A reviewer should check the underlying transactions, labels, dates, and context before drawing conclusions.

Why tracing can become uncertain

Following transparent transfers on one blockchain is not the same as proving a continuous path of ownership. Several common features can make a trace harder or less conclusive:

  • Pooling: A service may combine funds from many users, making it difficult to assign a later payment to one earlier deposit.
  • Mixing and peel chains: Transactions may be structured to obscure relationships or break a straightforward path. The DOJ’s May 2021 practitioner article warns that some mixing can make tracing highly impractical; that does not mean every attempt is impossible or every technique is defeated.
  • Chain hopping: A bridge, exchange, swap, or other service may move value between networks. Each blockchain records its own side of the transfer, and the two events may not have a transparent transaction-to-transaction link. Connecting them can require additional evidence.
  • Privacy-enhanced systems: Some chains or services are designed to reveal less transaction information, limiting what can be inferred from public records.
  • Wallet privacy leaks: Privacy can depend on wallet software as well as the blockchain. Bitcoin.org notes that some lightweight wallets send all of a user’s addresses to a server to retrieve their associated transactions, which can reveal address associations to that server.

As a result, an apparent gap in a trace does not establish that funds disappeared, and a plausible connection across a service or network is not automatically conclusive. The method and supporting evidence matter.

What this means for crypto users

Assume that transactions on a public blockchain may remain visible and linkable, even if an address is not labeled with your name. Reusing addresses or revealing an address publicly can make it easier to associate activity; wallet design and service records can add further links. This does not mean every observer can identify every user: identity attribution generally requires evidence that connects activity to a person or service.

For an individual reviewing a transaction, a blockchain explorer can show ledger events, but it cannot by itself validate a commercial analytics label or establish the real-world identity behind an address. If a platform, investigator, or compliance team makes a consequential claim based on an analytics result, the relevant questions are what transactions and labels support it, when those labels were current, how the trace handled pooled or cross-chain funds, and whether a qualified human reviewed the conclusion.

How analytics is used professionally

The main uses described by Chainalysis and Elliptic are investigations, compliance monitoring, risk screening, and tracing funds across networks. Professional platforms ingest and organize blockchain data, apply labels and analytic methods, and support workflows for monitoring or investigation. They are specialized software and data services—not a physical device an ordinary crypto holder needs to buy.

For legal proceedings, an analytic output may need explanation and corroboration. The DOJ’s May 2021 article cautions that proprietary methods can create challenges when presenting analysis in court. Evidentiary standards and legal treatment depend on the jurisdiction and case; a tool’s output should not be mistaken for a universal legal conclusion.
