How BlackRock Became the World’s Largest Asset Manager—and What $10 Trillion Means

BlackRock’s $10 trillion milestone reflects decades of risk-focused investing, technology, acquisitions, ETF growth and client flows. Here’s what AUM measures and how the firm expanded.

BlackRock reached $10.0 trillion in assets under management (AUM) at December 31, 2023, by combining investment and risk-management expertise, proprietary portfolio technology, acquisitions, expanding demand for index funds and ETFs, and continuing client inflows. That milestone is dated: BlackRock reported $14.0 trillion at December 31, 2025. AUM measures assets the firm manages for clients—not money BlackRock owns or the company’s market value—so it is more accurate to call BlackRock the world’s largest asset manager than the biggest company under every measure.

What BlackRock’s $10 trillion figure measures

Assets under management are investments that clients entrust to an asset manager, including assets held in funds and accounts. The figure is not BlackRock’s revenue, balance-sheet assets or market capitalization. AUM can rise when clients add money, when the value of their investments increases, or through acquisitions; it can also fall when clients withdraw assets or markets decline.

BlackRock’s 2023 Form 10-K reported $10.0 trillion in AUM at December 31, 2023 (2023 Form 10-K). The milestone was not the end of the story: its 2025 Form 10-K reported $14.0 trillion at December 31, 2025 (2025 Form 10-K). EFE, in a July 15, 2026 report published by Cinco Días, put AUM at $15.34 trillion at June 30, 2026, citing company results (Cinco Días). AUM changes over time, so each figure belongs to its reporting date.

How BlackRock built its scale

It began with fixed-income investing and risk analysis

BlackRock was founded in New York in 1988 by eight colleagues to manage fixed-income assets. Its early focus on analyzing portfolios and their risks shaped the firm’s development of Aladdin, a technology platform for investment management and risk work. The company’s history says its initial name became BlackRock in 1992 (BlackRock’s history).

It turned internal technology into an external business

Aladdin began as a tool to support BlackRock’s own portfolio and risk-management work. The firm’s careers timeline says it began selling the platform to outside clients in 1999 and launched BlackRock Solutions in 2000 (BlackRock careers timeline). That helped build a technology-services business alongside investment management. BlackRock’s 2025 Annual Report recorded $2 billion in technology revenue for 2025, up 24% from 2024 (2025 Annual Report).

CEO Larry Fink described the platform’s role this way in the same annual report: “Our Aladdin technology has always been at the center of the firm, supporting BlackRock’s growth alongside our clients’.” That is the CEO’s characterization; Aladdin is one part of a broader growth story, not a standalone explanation for the firm’s AUM.

Acquisitions broadened its products and reach

Deals gave BlackRock capabilities and distribution it would have taken time to build itself. The 2006 acquisition of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers extended its retail distribution and international presence. In 2009, BlackRock acquired Barclays Global Investors (BGI), adding iShares ETFs and systematic investing capabilities. BlackRock says the BGI deal made it the world’s largest asset manager (BlackRock careers timeline; BlackRock’s history).

Later acquisitions added or expanded personalized investing and private-market capabilities, including Aperio and eFront. BlackRock’s 2025 Annual Report describes the completed acquisitions of HPS, Preqin and ElmTree as additions to its private-credit, data and real-estate capabilities (2025 Annual Report). Acquisitions widened what the firm could offer; they were not the only source of AUM growth.

ETFs and client demand supported continued inflows

Index funds and ETFs made it possible for investors and institutions to access diversified market exposure through products designed to track an index. BlackRock’s iShares business gave it a major platform in ETFs after the BGI acquisition. The firm reported $527 billion in ETF net inflows during 2025, within total net inflows of $698 billion that year, according to its 2025 Annual Report. These are company-reported flows for 2025, not a guarantee that future inflows will continue at the same rate.

Why AUM grows for more than one reason

It would be misleading to attribute BlackRock’s expansion only to acquisitions, ETFs or Aladdin. AUM reflects a combination of client decisions and market outcomes. In its 2025 Form 10-K, BlackRock identifies net market valuation gains, net inflows, realizations and acquisitions as contributors to growth. It reported a 10% compound annual growth rate in AUM over the five years through December 31, 2025 (2025 Form 10-K).

  • Net inflows: Client contributions add assets; withdrawals reduce them.
  • Market valuation: The value of investments BlackRock manages can rise or fall with markets.
  • Acquisitions: Buying another business can bring its managed assets and capabilities into BlackRock.
  • Realizations: The 2025 Form 10-K includes realizations among the factors affecting AUM growth.

These factors interact. Strong inflows do not guarantee that AUM rises if markets fall sharply, and market gains can lift AUM without a corresponding increase in the number of clients or amount of new money invested.

What the growth means for individual investors

BlackRock’s scale can make it an important provider of funds and investment services, but firm-wide AUM is not a measure of whether a particular fund is suitable, low-cost or likely to outperform. AUM also does not belong to BlackRock’s shareholders in the way corporate cash or property would. An individual choosing an investment should assess that fund’s objective, holdings, fees, risks and fit with their own circumstances rather than treating the asset manager’s size as a recommendation.
