For a company holding a fixed amount of Bitcoin, the gross market value of that holding is straightforward: BTC units × BTC price. A 1% change in Bitcoin’s price therefore creates a 1% change in the dollar value of the coins, before considering any change in the number of coins.
That arithmetic does not mean the company’s stock, total equity, cash balance or net income will move by the same percentage. Debt, dilution, operating results, accounting rules, custody arrangements, collateral, derivatives and investor expectations can all change the result.

The basic relationship: price multiplied by quantity
Start with two figures measured at the same date:
- Bitcoin quantity: the number of BTC the company owns or controls.
- Bitcoin price: the market price used for the valuation date and market you are analyzing.
The gross marked value is:
Gross BTC value = BTC held × BTC price
If a company owns 1,000 BTC and the relevant price is $60,000, the gross holding is worth $60 million. If the price rises to $66,000 while the quantity remains 1,000 BTC, the value becomes $66 million—a 10% increase. If the price falls to $54,000, the value falls to $54 million.
| BTC held | Price per BTC | Gross holding value | Change from $60,000 starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $60,000 | $60,000,000 | — |
| 1,000 | $66,000 | $66,000,000 | +10% |
| 1,000 | $54,000 | $54,000,000 | −10% |
With a fixed quantity, the percentage change in the holding exactly matches the percentage change in Bitcoin’s price. The dollar change depends on the starting quantity: a 10% move on $1 million is $100,000, while a 10% move on $1 billion is $100 million.

Quantity can change independently of price
The fixed-quantity rule applies only when the company’s BTC balance is unchanged. Purchases increase units; sales reduce them. Mining, lending, borrowing, staking-related arrangements, donations, or other treasury transactions can also alter the amount economically attributable to the company. A company that buys more BTC during a price decline may show a smaller value loss than a company that holds a fixed balance, while a seller can reduce its exposure even if the market later rebounds.
Always pair a dated quantity with a dated price. Comparing a quarter-end BTC balance with today’s quote can produce a number that never existed on the company’s books.
Why a higher BTC holding value does not make the whole company 10% more valuable
The multiplication gives the value of one asset, not the value of the business that owns it. A company’s equity value is affected by its assets, liabilities and claims on those assets. A simplified relationship is:

Bitcoin may be only one asset. The company may also have cash, equipment, investments, receivables and an operating business. Its liabilities can include debt, convertible notes, leases, payables and obligations connected with Bitcoin financing. If Bitcoin rises 10%, the BTC asset may rise 10%, but the stock need not rise 10% because:
- Debt holders have claims senior to shareholders.
- New shares or convertible securities can dilute each existing share.
- The company may issue equity or debt to buy more Bitcoin.
- Operating losses or profits can outweigh the Bitcoin mark.
- Taxes, transaction costs and liquidity needs can reduce the amount available to shareholders.
- Investors may already have anticipated the price move or may apply a discount or premium to the company’s holdings.
Therefore, “Bitcoin rose 10%” supports a 10% increase in the gross value of a fixed BTC balance, not a one-for-one forecast for the share price or total equity value. Company filings do not establish a universal stock-price formula tied solely to Bitcoin’s daily percentage move.

Dated company examples: separating units, price and cost basis
Public disclosures show why the date and the type of value being reported matter. The figures below are historical company disclosures, not current market quotations.
| Disclosure | BTC quantity | Price or value disclosed | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strategy Inc., holdings as of February 13, 2026 | Approximately 717,131 BTC | Aggregate purchase price approximately $54.5 billion; average purchase price approximately $76,027 per BTC; filing also cited a Coinbase BTC market price of $68,734 | Purchase price (cost basis) and market price are different measures. The cost basis is not the current market value. |
| Strategy Inc., quarterly filing as of April 26, 2026 | Approximately 818,334 BTC | Approximately $64.04 billion using $78,258 per BTC | Multiplying the reported quantity by the dated price produces the disclosed gross value; the quantity was different from the February disclosure. |
| SEC registrant, June 30, 2026 | 12,205 BTC | Fair value of $58,524 per BTC; total fair value $714.293 million | The total is the unit price multiplied by the units on that reporting date. |
| Same registrant, September 30, 2025 comparison | 10,428 BTC | Fair value of $114,068 per BTC | More BTC does not guarantee a higher total value when the market price changes sharply. |
In the last comparison, the company held 1,777 more BTC on June 30, 2026 than on September 30, 2025, yet the reported unit price was much lower. The June 30 total fair value was about $714.293 million, whereas 10,428 BTC at $114,068 per BTC would have represented roughly $1.19 billion before considering any issuer-specific adjustments. Looking only at the unit count would miss the dominant price effect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe Strategy disclosures also illustrate why cost basis should not be confused with fair value. An aggregate purchase price of $54.5 billion describes what was paid for approximately 717,131 BTC; it is not the same as what those coins could have been sold for on February 13, 2026.
Choosing the price: Bitcoin trades continuously
Bitcoin trades around the clock across multiple venues, so there is no single universal exchange closing price. A registrant’s fair-value note describes using a BTC-USD spot price of $59,007.48 per BTC at 23:59:59 UTC on June 30, 2026 from its identified principal market. The filing classified that observable quoted price as a Level 1 input.
That is an issuer-specific policy example, not a rule that every company or jurisdiction must use the same exchange, timestamp or index. When analyzing a filing, check:

How accounting changes the reported effect
Fair-value accounting under ASU 2023-08
For qualifying crypto assets, FASB Accounting Standards Update 2023-08 requires fair-value measurement, with changes recognized in net income each reporting period. Strategy’s filing says it adopted the standard on January 1, 2025. Under this presentation, a Bitcoin price increase can produce an unrealized gain in reported earnings, while a decline can produce an unrealized loss, even if the company has not sold any coins.
The same filing says adoption changed financial results and carrying value and increased earnings volatility because Bitcoin prices are volatile. A reader comparing an earlier annual period with a later period must determine whether both periods use the same accounting rules. Historical cost or impairment presentations from earlier periods may not be directly comparable with fair-value net income after adoption.
Net income is not cash flow
A fair-value gain is an accounting measurement. It does not automatically create cash that the company can use to pay suppliers, service debt or make distributions. Cash is generated when the company sells Bitcoin or obtains financing against it, and those actions introduce transaction costs, market risk and potentially different tax or contractual consequences.
Restrictions, collateral and derivatives can change the economic exposure
A headline BTC quantity may not equal immediately available, unencumbered BTC. Filings can describe coins that are pledged as collateral, loaned to another party, held in custody under contractual restrictions or connected with derivatives and settlement terms.

Two companies could each report 10,000 BTC, yet have very different practical exposure:
- One may hold the coins in unrestricted custody and be able to sell them promptly.
- Another may have pledged them to secure a loan, making a sale subject to the lender’s rights.
- A third may have lent the coins or entered a derivative contract that changes who bears gains, losses or counterparty risk.
These arrangements can affect liquidity and downside risk without changing the reported coin count. Review collateral schedules, borrowing terms, custody disclosures and derivative notes before treating a BTC balance as freely usable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risks and costs that the multiplication leaves out
Bitcoin does not generate contractual interest, dividends or other operating cash flows. A company relying on it for treasury value may need to sell coins or borrow money to meet expenses. The filings reviewed identify several additional risks:
- Market risk: a rapid price fall reduces the marked value and may trigger collateral requirements.
- Liquidity risk: selling a large position can move the market or occur at an unfavorable price.
- Custody risk: safeguarding private keys and arranging institutional custody creates operational responsibilities and costs.
- Cybersecurity risk: theft, unauthorized access or loss of key material can impair control of the asset.
- Counterparty risk: a custodian, lender, exchange or derivative counterparty may fail to perform.
- Financing risk: interest, maturities and covenants can force asset sales during a downturn.
Transaction fees, custody charges, insurance, legal costs and taxes can also make the net economic result smaller than the gross price move suggests.

- Locate the latest filing. Use the balance-sheet date and the accompanying digital-asset or fair-value note, rather than a marketing page or an undated headline.
- Record the BTC quantity. Note whether it is direct ownership, a consolidated subsidiary balance or an amount subject to lending, custody or collateral arrangements.
- Record the valuation price and timestamp. Capture the quoted market, principal market, index and currency.
- Calculate gross value. Multiply the units by the stated price and compare your result with the filing’s total. Investigate any difference instead of assuming a calculation error.
- Separate cost basis from fair value. Purchase price, average cost and unrealized gain or loss answer different questions.
- Read the liabilities and financing notes. Identify debt, convertible instruments, collateral, margin requirements and maturities that could affect shareholders.
- Check the accounting date and standard. Determine whether fair-value accounting under ASU 2023-08 applies and whether the comparison period used the same policy.
- Adjust your conclusion for accessibility. Ask how much BTC is unrestricted and how much cash the company would actually have after selling costs, taxes and debt obligations.

| Comparison axis | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Quantity and date | How many BTC were reported, and on what exact date? |
| Price source | Which market, index and timestamp produced the valuation? |
| Cost versus fair value | Is the number an acquisition cost, carrying amount or current fair value? |
| Accounting policy | Does the period reflect fair-value accounting under ASU 2023-08? |
| Restrictions | Are coins pledged, loaned, held under custody restrictions or otherwise unavailable? |
| Financing and derivatives | What debt, collateral, conversion rights or derivative exposure sits alongside the BTC? |
| Liquidity needs | Could the company be forced to sell or raise capital during a price decline? |
Only after these checks should you compare market capitalization with the value of the Bitcoin balance. Even then, the difference may reflect the operating business, liabilities, taxes, expected future purchases, management policy and investor sentiment—not simply an error in the BTC arithmetic.
What a 10% Bitcoin move means in practice
Suppose a company reports 5,000 unrestricted BTC at a valuation price of $70,000. Its gross BTC value is $350 million. A 10% rise to $77,000 adds $35 million to that asset’s marked value. A 10% fall to $63,000 removes $35 million.
The company’s equity could change by more or less than $35 million. If it has $200 million of debt secured by the coins, shareholders do not own the entire $350 million asset value free and clear. If it issues new shares to buy additional BTC, the asset may grow while each existing share represents a smaller percentage of the company. If the operating business loses $20 million during the same period, that loss offsets part of the Bitcoin gain. If the company sells coins to fund expenses, its BTC quantity falls and the next price move applies to a smaller balance.
The reliable conclusion is narrow but useful: hold the number of BTC constant, hold the valuation convention constant, and a 10% Bitcoin move produces a 10% move in the gross marked value of that BTC. Anything beyond that requires analysis of the company’s capital structure, accounting, operations and treasury arrangements.
The company’s own policy statement
Strategy Inc.’s Form 10-K states: “We view our bitcoin holdings as long-term holdings and expect to continue to accumulate bitcoin.” That sentence describes management’s stated intention. It is not an independent forecast of Bitcoin’s price, a guarantee that purchases will continue or evidence that shareholders will receive a matching return.
