Yes—net creations in U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) can add buying demand for Bitcoin, and net redemptions can add selling pressure. But a flow figure is not a price forecast or proof of what caused a move. It covers a defined set of funds and time window, while Bitcoin trades around the clock across spot and derivatives markets. Price moves can also prompt investors to buy or sell ETP shares.
How a spot Bitcoin ETP flow can reach the Bitcoin market
An ETP share trades on a securities exchange, but the fund’s exposure is tied to Bitcoin. When there are net share creations, authorized participants and fund service providers arrange the exposure required by that product’s structure. This can involve acquiring Bitcoin in the spot market, adding marginal buying demand. Net redemptions can lead to Bitcoin being sold.

Arbitrage between an ETP’s share price and its net asset value (NAV) helps keep the shares near the value of their underlying assets. The connection between a reported flow and a Bitcoin trade is mediated by the product’s creation and redemption process, execution timing, arbitrage, and market liquidity. It is not a one-for-one rule: secondary-market trading in ETP shares does not mean the fund buys or sells an equivalent amount of Bitcoin.

The SEC approved the listing and trading of certain U.S. spot Bitcoin ETPs on January 10, 2024; shares began trading the following day. The SEC said its action did not endorse Bitcoin or the custody arrangements of any particular product. Read the SEC chair’s January 10, 2024 statement.

What an inflow or outflow actually measures
A net flow measures net creations or redemptions across a stated set of funds over a stated interval. It is evidence of demand for those fund shares during that interval, and may be consistent with demand reaching the underlying Bitcoin market. It does not, by itself, show how much Bitcoin was bought or sold at a particular moment, establish whether flows came before a price change, or reveal what Bitcoin’s price would have been without those flows.
Share trading volume is a different measure. Investors can trade existing shares with one another without the fund creating or redeeming shares, so volume alone is not a direct measure of fund demand or changes in Bitcoin exposure.

Why price and flows can move in both directions
Flows may affect Bitcoin’s marginal supply and demand, but Bitcoin’s price can also affect ETP flows. Rising prices may attract investors; falling prices may prompt them to sell. A same-day inflow alongside a price rise establishes that both occurred during the measured period—not that the inflow initiated the rise.

The paper’s abstract reports average weekly net flows of 1.4%, and estimates that a 3.4% Bitcoin price change corresponded, on average, to a 0.2% net fund flow, all else equal. Why reported flows are only one part of the picture
Bitcoin trades continuously across global spot and derivatives venues, while U.S. ETP shares trade during securities-market sessions. A daily flow report and a daily Bitcoin return may therefore cover overlapping but differently bounded periods. Comparing a U.S. market-date flow with Bitcoin prices measured at UTC daily closes can change which event appears to come first.
Other activity can amplify, offset, or coincide with flows. Derivatives traders may hedge exposures; leverage, liquidity, investor positioning, macroeconomic news, regulatory events, and the amount of Bitcoin available for sale also affect prices. A flow total cannot reveal all of these forces or capture total global demand.

Useful interpretation requires knowing what the figure covers and when. Consider whether it measures net creations or redemptions rather than share turnover, how its reporting window lines up with the price window, and whether fund Bitcoin exposure actually changed. Read it alongside spot-market liquidity and derivatives positioning rather than treating it as a complete account of demand.
What historical flow and trading data show—and what they do not
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s May 2024 analysis gives a dated launch-period snapshot, not current market totals. It reported the following observations:

Those figures use different measures and windows, so they should not be added together or used as present-day market totals. The Fed authors wrote that Bitcoin ETPs had shown “some potential for greater liquidity and price efficiency,” while noting that their volumes had been lower than other Bitcoin trading products. What the SEC’s approval does—and does not—say about price
The SEC’s January 2024 action addressed listing and trading of specific spot Bitcoin ETP shares under securities-market rules. In its related approval record, the agency discussed the high correlation it observed between spot Bitcoin and CME Bitcoin futures prices, and the role surveillance sharing with CME could play in detecting and deterring fraud and manipulation. That was a market-surveillance rationale; it does not establish that ETP flows control Bitcoin’s price or are its dominant driver. See the SEC approval order.
