GSMA says the region reached $1 trillion in 2025, or 5.9% of regional GDP. Its Asia Pacific figures exclude Greater China unless otherwise stated. The headline “surpass $1tn by 2030” reflects an earlier forecast, not the current endpoint.
What does the $1.4 trillion forecast measure?
It is an estimate of mobile technologies and services’ contribution to the regional economy. It is not a forecast of mobile-service revenue, telecom operators’ turnover, handset sales, or the value of a standalone mobile-industry market. The distinction matters: economic contribution describes the wider economic activity associated with mobile, rather than money earned only by mobile providers.
The figures are estimates and projections from GSMA Intelligence, an organization representing the mobile ecosystem. The published summaries establish the headline results but do not provide enough detail to independently reconstruct the complete forecasting model. Treat the 2025 figure as an estimate and the 2030 figure as a forecast, not as observed future results. GSMA’s 2026 report and its 6 August 2026 release give the current headline figures.
How did the forecast change?
The headline’s original $1 trillion milestone came from an earlier GSMA forecast. Later editions moved the projected endpoint higher, while also reporting different baselines. The editions are useful as a record of forecast vintages, but the available material does not explain all the revisions.

| GSMA edition | Baseline and 2030 outlook | What it said about mobile |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 release | Forecast contribution above $1 trillion by 2030 | Projected almost $130 billion in regional economic contribution from 5G in 2030. GSMA, 25 July 2024 |
| 2025 report | $950 billion in 2024 (5.6% of GDP); approximately $1.4 trillion in 2030 (6.6% of GDP). Its chart estimates $1,040 billion for 2025 and $1,390 billion for 2030. | Reported a 6.5% CAGR for 2025–2030 and attributed 28% of mobile-enabled economic growth over 2024–2030 to manufacturing. These are estimates from the 2025 edition, not separately verified 2026 figures. 2025 report PDF |
| 2026 report | $1 trillion in 2025 (5.9% of GDP); $1.4 trillion projected by 2030 | Calls this a 40% increase from the $1 trillion “generated today”; the report landing page separately reports a 6.1% CAGR. The available 2026 material does not explain the baseline, rounding, or growth-rate differences from the 2025 edition. GSMA, 2026 |
The 2025 chart’s $1,040 billion estimate for 2025 and the 2026 report’s rounded $1 trillion baseline are not identical. The report materials do not explain the difference, so it should not be attributed to a particular methodological change. Likewise, the 2025 edition’s 6.5% CAGR and the 2026 landing page’s 6.1% figure should be understood as edition-specific published rates, not combined into a single trend.
What is expected to drive the growth?
More 5G connections
GSMA forecasts 1.5 billion 5G connections in Asia Pacific by 2030, equal to 50% of all mobile connections in the region. It also projects more than $200 billion in operator capital expenditure from 2025 to 2030. Both are forecasts, not completed investment or current connection totals. GSMA’s 2026 release

AI and productivity across industries
The GSMA identifies deeper AI integration alongside 5G expansion as a driver. Its stated economic channels include productivity and efficiency improvements, particularly as advanced mobile technologies are used in manufacturing and services. The 2026 release expects those two sectors together to account for more than half of the economic benefits from advanced mobile technologies. The 28% manufacturing share sometimes cited for mobile-enabled growth is a separate estimate in the 2025 edition, covering 2024–2030; it should not be presented as the 2026 report’s updated sector split. What could complicate that outlook?
The forecast depends on networks and digital services being trusted, secure, resilient, and investable. GSMA’s 2026 release highlights declining digital trust, scams and fraud, cybersecurity, infrastructure resilience, and digital sovereignty as strategic issues. These are challenges to managing the region’s digital development, not quantified deductions from the $1.4 trillion forecast.

The 2025 report also named investment gaps, regulation, and spectrum policy as priorities. Its 2024 forecast described 5G as a source of economic contribution, but those earlier figures are not a substitute for the newer outlook.

For personal-finance readers, the $1.4 trillion figure is regional economic context, not a measure of household income, consumer savings, or a guaranteed return from investing in telecom or technology companies. It indicates the scale of economic activity GSMA associates with mobile technologies and services under its forecast; it does not say how that activity will be distributed among countries, businesses, workers, or consumers.
Rank #4
The appropriate reading is therefore twofold: the $1 trillion-by-2030 headline is an earlier milestone, and the latest GSMA forecast is $1.4 trillion by 2030 for Asia Pacific excluding Greater China unless stated otherwise. The newer number remains a forecast, and published materials do not fully explain how every baseline and growth-rate revision between editions was made.
