Dave Bautista has said he went broke after leaving WWE to pursue acting. In a 2019 interview, he described roughly three years with little work, no regular wrestling paycheck, continuing expenses and obligations, and problems with the IRS. In a separate account, he said an IRS lien kept him from selling his house and that he arranged a voluntary foreclosure. Those are Bautista’s retrospective descriptions—not a published audit or a precise accounting of his finances.
How did Batista go broke after WWE?
Bautista explained the hardship as a gap between the steady income he had earned as a wrestler and the uncertain work he found after leaving. Speaking with Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You in 2019, he said he “barely worked” for three years, was hit by the IRS, and went broke. He also described the practical problem: weekly income stopped, but his living costs and the people relying on him did not.
In the interview, Bautista put it this way: “it’s a whole different thing when you got to check coming in, you know, every week, and then all of a sudden you don’t have anything coming every week.” He said he had to start over. His account points to a loss of predictable income combined with ongoing obligations; it does not provide a detailed budget or independently verified financial records.
Why did Batista leave WWE?
Bautista said he left WWE in 2010 to pursue acting, even though he had been earning a good living as a wrestler. He described wanting to prove he could make it as an actor. At Denver Pop Culture Con in 2019, as reported by Sky Sports, he said, “I starved for three years,” and “I went broke. I lost everything. I couldn’t get a job.” Those remarks describe his experience as he recalled it; they are not a separate financial accounting.

Did Dave Bautista lose his house?
In a clip from Running Wild with Bear Grylls, reported by ComicBook.com as supplied by National Geographic, Bautista said he was “upside down” on his house and could not sell it because the IRS had placed a lien on it. He said he arranged a voluntary foreclosure. This is his account of the home and tax situation; the cited coverage does not give a debt amount, house value, or further legal details.
How long was Batista out of work?
In the 2019 Michael Rosenbaum interview, Bautista said he barely worked for three years after leaving wrestling. That is his retrospective estimate of the difficult period, not a verified employment record or a precise count of every acting job during those years.

How did acting change the situation?
Bautista said landing the role of Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy came after years of struggle. After he finished the film, he said, he called WWE chairman Vince McMahon about returning to wrestle for a time. Reports by Sky Sports and ComicBook.com describe this as a turning point in his account, linking the acting role to a possible return to wrestling.

The available accounts establish what Bautista has said about the post-WWE hardship: reduced work, lost regular income, continuing obligations, IRS issues, and a voluntary foreclosure. They do not establish a dollar figure for his IRS debt, losses, earnings, assets, or net worth at the time. “Went broke” is his own description, not a published audit. The material also does not substantiate a separate pre-wrestling financial episode, so it cannot support a full “before and after” financial history.
