Re:

How Automation and Robotics Are Transforming Jobs and the Future of Work Globally

Automation will change far more jobs than it eliminates outright—but some roles will disappear, entry-level pathways may narrow and job quality will depend on how employers and governments manage the transition.

Automation is more likely to change the tasks inside most jobs than to eliminate every job in an occupation. Machines and software are taking over repetitive physical work, data processing, inspection, scheduling and other predictable tasks. At the same time, they are creating demand for technicians, engineers, supervisors, safety specialists, data workers and people who can redesign human-machine workflows.

That does not make the transition painless. Some jobs will disappear, entry-level opportunities may shrink, and workers may face more surveillance, faster work rhythms or weaker bargaining power. The outcome will depend not only on what technology can do, but also on how employers, governments and workers distribute its gains and manage its risks.

The short answer: transformation is the dominant pattern

There is no reliable single number for how many jobs “robots will take.” Forecasts differ because automation does not happen to job titles in the abstract. It happens to particular tasks, workplaces and business processes.

A factory robot may weld, paint or move materials while people operate equipment, maintain systems, handle exceptions and improve production. An AI system may draft a report while a professional checks evidence, interprets context and takes responsibility for the recommendation. A warehouse robot may reduce walking and lifting while increasing the need for monitoring, troubleshooting and rapid response.

The most defensible global conclusion as of August 2026 is that automation is changing the task mix inside occupations, while some roles disappear, new roles emerge and many jobs are reorganized around technology.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that structural labour-market changes could create 170 million jobs and displace 92 million by 2030, for a net increase of 78 million. This is an employer-expectation-based projection using ILO employment data—not a guarantee, and not a forecast attributable to robots alone. The same report estimates that robotics and autonomous systems could produce a net decline of about 5 million jobs, also based on surveyed employer expectations.

Automation, robotics and AI are not the same thing

These terms overlap, but they describe different technologies and labour-market effects:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Automation is the use of technology to perform tasks with reduced direct human intervention. It can involve machines, software or both.
  • Robotics involves automated or semi-automated machines that interact with the physical world.
  • Industrial robots are programmable machines used for welding, assembly, painting, packaging and material handling.
  • Service robots operate in settings such as logistics, healthcare, hospitality, agriculture, cleaning and retail.
  • Software automation includes scripts, workflow systems, robotic process automation and back-office tools.
  • Artificial intelligence refers to systems that perform tasks involving prediction, classification, perception, language or decision-making.
  • Generative AI creates text, images, audio, video, software or other content.
  • Autonomous systems sense their environment and make operational decisions with limited direct control.
  • Augmentation means technology increases a worker’s capabilities instead of removing the worker from the process.

A physical robot, a document-processing system and a generative-AI assistant may all automate work, but they require different investment, infrastructure, skills, safety controls and regulation. They should not be treated as one trend.

Why task exposure is not the same as job loss

Most occupations combine routine and non-routine work. A bookkeeper may enter and reconcile data, explain unusual transactions and advise a client. A nurse may document care, monitor a patient, make judgments and provide reassurance. A delivery worker may follow an optimized route but still handle exceptions, customers and unexpected conditions.

Technology may automate only one part of that work. The result can be:

  • Machine-only tasks: predictable activities a system performs independently.
  • Human-only tasks: work requiring trust, accountability, empathy, dexterity or judgment.
  • Shared tasks: activities where software recommends and a person reviews or decides.
  • New tasks: supervision, maintenance, auditing, exception handling and workflow redesign.

The International Labour Organization’s 2025 generative-AI analysis finds that roughly one in four workers globally are in occupations with some degree of generative-AI exposure. Its methodology examines nearly 30,000 tasks across hundreds of occupations. An exposure score indicates technical potential, not that employers will dismiss everyone in those occupations. The ILO’s conclusion is that most affected jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant because human input remains necessary for many tasks.

Adoption also depends on more than technical feasibility. Employers consider the cost of equipment, reliability, maintenance, integration, labour availability, regulation, safety, customer acceptance and the consequences of failure. A task can be technically automatable yet economically or legally impractical to automate.

Which jobs are most exposed?

Clerical and routine office work

Software and AI are particularly suited to predictable information work, including:

  • Data entry and document processing
  • Routine bookkeeping and basic accounting
  • Scheduling and transcription
  • Standardized customer-service interactions
  • Summarization and routine research
  • Template-based content production
  • Basic coding and software-maintenance tasks

The WEF expects clerical and secretarial roles to be among the largest declining categories by 2030. Cashiers, ticket clerks, administrative assistants, executive secretaries, printing workers and some accounting roles are among the faster-declining occupations identified in its employer survey. This does not mean every person in these roles will be replaced. It means the routine portion of the work is under pressure and staffing models may change.

Physical work suited to controlled environments

Robotics is most effective when tasks are repetitive, standardized and performed in predictable surroundings. More exposed activities include assembly, welding, painting, machine tending, packaging, quality inspection, warehouse picking and pallet movement. Agriculture, commercial cleaning, mining and some food preparation may also see greater automation.

Physical automation is harder in unstructured environments. A robot that works reliably in a controlled factory cell may struggle in a crowded hospital, changing construction site, irregular farm field or cluttered home.

Jobs that are harder to automate completely

Care work, social work, teaching, skilled trades, negotiation, leadership, conflict resolution and relationship-based sales all involve qualities that are difficult to reproduce consistently in machines. High-stakes roles also require accountability, cultural judgment and trust.

“Harder to automate” does not mean “unaffected.” Scheduling systems, documentation tools, diagnostic support, monitoring software and algorithmic performance scoring can still change these jobs substantially.

Which jobs are likely to grow?

Some growth will come directly from technology. Potentially important roles include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Robotics, automation and controls engineers
  • Mechatronics technicians
  • Robot installation, repair and calibration specialists
  • Industrial data analysts
  • AI implementation and product managers
  • Cybersecurity professionals
  • Human-machine interaction designers
  • AI governance and model-risk specialists
  • Occupational-safety experts
  • Workforce trainers and reskilling leaders

Many workers will not need to become AI engineers. New demand will also arise for people who use, supervise, maintain, audit and integrate technology within a particular industry.

The WEF identifies big-data specialists, fintech engineers, AI and machine-learning specialists, and software and applications developers among the fastest-growing roles by 2030. It also expects growth in project management, general and operations management, delivery driving, social work and several green-transition occupations. Demographics, infrastructure investment and environmental change can create jobs even when the roles are not primarily technical.

How major industries are changing

Manufacturing

Robots can improve consistency, throughput and workplace safety, and may make production in high-wage locations more competitive. They can reduce demand for routine production work while increasing demand for technicians, process engineers, programmers and maintenance staff.

This can produce labour-market polarization: more high-skill technical work, continued demand for hands-on roles and fewer middle-skill routine positions. Automation can also bring production closer to customers without restoring the number of jobs that existed before automation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warehousing and logistics

Autonomous mobile robots, conveyor systems, machine vision, inventory software and route optimization can reduce walking, lifting and search time. They can also increase pace pressure, monitoring and the consequences of system downtime.

Employers and workers should ask whether automation reduces injuries or shifts them, who controls the work pace, whether workers understand recovery procedures and whether fewer jobs become more demanding.

Healthcare

Robotics and AI can support surgery, imaging, medication delivery, logistics, patient monitoring and documentation. Healthcare remains highly dependent on human communication, physical care, trust and judgment.

Agriculture

Autonomous tractors, drones, precision-agriculture systems and harvesting machines may address labour shortages and improve resource use. Adoption is constrained by weather, terrain, crop variety, seasonal economics and the difficulty of handling delicate produce.

Retail and hospitality

Self-checkout, inventory automation, chatbots, kitchen robotics and scheduling software can reduce routine labour requirements. Workers may instead spend more time on customer recovery, exceptions, service and system supervision—or face fewer hours if employers use technology mainly to reduce staffing.

Transportation

Autonomous vehicles and delivery systems could affect drivers, dispatchers, warehouse staff and fleet managers. Deployment is limited by safety validation, insurance, infrastructure, weather, regulation and public acceptance.

Offices and professional services

Generative AI and workflow automation can change legal research, marketing, accounting, software development, consulting, finance and administration. The near-term effect is likely to be a reallocation of junior tasks, review duties and output expectations rather than immediate full automation of entire professions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why entry-level workers face a special risk

Routine tasks are often assigned to junior workers because they provide a way to learn an occupation. If those tasks disappear, organizations may retain senior employees who provide judgment and client relationships while reducing entry-level hiring.

The IMF reported in January 2026 that one in 10 job postings in advanced economies and one in 20 in emerging-market economies required at least one newly demanded skill. It also cited evidence that generative-AI adoption may reduce entry-level hiring when tasks can be automated. This is an emerging risk, not proof that career ladders are disappearing everywhere.

The danger is an experience bottleneck:

  • Fewer junior tasks mean fewer opportunities to learn on the job.
  • Employers may demand experience for roles that used to provide it.
  • Young workers and career changers may be affected disproportionately.
  • Training systems may need to provide supervised practice and apprenticeships.

Employers that remove junior roles without creating alternative learning routes may weaken their own future talent pipeline.

Skills that matter in an automated economy

“Learn to code” is too narrow. The most useful skill combination depends on the industry and the worker’s existing expertise.

Technical and digital capabilities

  • Data literacy and statistical reasoning
  • AI-tool use, verification and evaluation
  • Cybersecurity awareness
  • Spreadsheet and workflow automation
  • Basic programming or scripting where relevant
  • Robotics operation and troubleshooting
  • Process mapping and improvement
  • Systems thinking

Human-centred capabilities

  • Communication and collaboration
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Leadership and negotiation
  • Creativity and adaptability
  • Empathy and relationship management
  • Ethical judgment and accountability

The WEF identifies AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technological literacy among the fastest-growing skill areas while also emphasizing human-centred capabilities and human-machine collaboration. The IMF reports that job postings containing newly demanded skills tend to pay about 3% more in the United Kingdom and United States, with larger premiums for postings requiring several such skills. These are correlations in vacancy data, not a guarantee that completing a course will produce a particular raise.

The global divide

Automation will not affect every country in the same way. Adoption depends on wages, labour shortages, demographics, manufacturing concentration, infrastructure, capital, education, labour law, informal employment and domestic technology capabilities.

The WEF reports that around 80% of industrial-robot installations are concentrated in China, Japan, the United States, South Korea and Germany. It also reports a global average of 162 industrial robots per 10,000 employees in 2023—approximately twice the level seven years earlier. These figures describe uneven industrial deployment, not the automation level of every workplace.

  • High-income, ageing economies may have stronger incentives to automate labour shortages.
  • Manufacturing exporters may adopt robots quickly while restructuring production employment.
  • Emerging economies may gain productivity but face risks to labour-intensive development paths.
  • Low-income economies may have less local adoption but remain exposed through global supply chains and digital services.
  • Regions with weak training systems may struggle to move displaced workers into new roles.

Technology can be concentrated in richer countries while its labour-market consequences spread through trade, outsourcing, reshoring and changes in global demand.

Safer, better work—or more intense work?

Employment totals do not capture job quality. Automation can remove people from dangerous, dirty or repetitive work, but it can also create new risks:

  • Human-robot collisions and unexpected machine movement
  • Poorly designed interfaces and inadequate training
  • Cybersecurity failures affecting physical systems
  • Repetitive work performed at machine-determined speed
  • Stress from constant monitoring
  • Reduced autonomy and fewer opportunities to challenge decisions

The OECD identifies risks including loss of agency, bias, discrimination, privacy breaches and lack of transparency. The ILO’s work on AI, digitalization, robotics and occupational safety emphasizes both the potential to improve health and the need to manage human-robot interaction and algorithmic-management risks.

A useful test is to ask what the system is designed to do: remove danger, eliminate drudgery and increase capability—or intensify work, reduce staffing and monitor people more closely.

Productivity does not determine who benefits

Automation can increase output without increasing employment in a particular process. The central distributional question is who receives the gains:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Shareholders through higher profits
  • Consumers through lower prices
  • High-skill workers through higher wages
  • Workers through better pay or shorter hours
  • Governments through tax revenue
  • Communities through investment

Productivity gains do not automatically become wage gains. Ownership, competition, bargaining power, taxation, labour institutions and public policy influence the result. The WEF frames augmentation and reskilling as choices shaped by investment and policy, not as purely technological inevitabilities.

What workers can do now

  1. Map your tasks. Separate routine, judgment-heavy, physical, relationship-based and exception-handling work.
  2. Learn the tools used in your industry. Industry-specific knowledge is more useful than chasing every new job title.
  3. Build evidence of outcomes. Show how you improved accuracy, reduced errors, saved time or managed a system.
  4. Develop complementary human skills. Communication, negotiation, judgment and trust become more valuable when routine work is automated.
  5. Seek workflow projects. Experience with quality control, system supervision, process redesign or recovery procedures can be valuable.
  6. Do not rely on certificates alone. Check whether training includes realistic practice, recognized assessment and a connection to actual vacancies.

An online course cannot guarantee protection from automation. Workers may also need employer-paid time, income support, childcare, transport, recognized credentials and access to real vacancies.

What employers should do

  • Automate tasks rather than removing people where augmentation is viable.
  • Involve workers before deployment and use their knowledge of exceptions and failure modes.
  • Measure defects, injuries, customer outcomes and job quality—not only speed.
  • Provide paid training during working hours.
  • Create internal mobility and supervised learning pathways.
  • Preserve entry-level opportunities or replace lost learning routes with apprenticeships and structured practice.
  • Audit automated systems for bias, error and security weaknesses.
  • Maintain human escalation channels and clarify liability when systems fail.
  • Give workers meaningful control when they remain responsible for automated decisions.

What governments should do

  • Fund lifelong learning, adult education and technical apprenticeships.
  • Modernize unemployment insurance and portable benefits.
  • Support workers during job transitions, including income, childcare and transport assistance.
  • Improve labour-market data and track job quality, not only employment totals.
  • Enforce safety, privacy and anti-discrimination rules.
  • Require transparency and appeal processes for high-impact automated decisions.
  • Help small firms afford training and safe implementation.
  • Invest in broadband, electricity and digital infrastructure.
  • Encourage competition so a small number of technology suppliers do not control essential capabilities.
  • Use public procurement to reward decent-work and worker-participation practices.

Common mistakes in automation projects

  • Automating a broken process instead of redesigning it
  • Ignoring exceptions and unusual cases
  • Underestimating integration and maintenance costs
  • Treating a vendor demonstration as production evidence
  • Removing human oversight too quickly
  • Failing to train workers on recovery procedures
  • Measuring speed while ignoring defects, injuries and customer outcomes
  • Leaving humans responsible without giving them meaningful control
  • Eliminating junior roles and weakening future talent pipelines
  • Using algorithmic scores without an appeal route
  • Assuming a system trained in one country will work fairly in another
  • Confusing technical capability with economic viability

How to interpret the major forecasts

Several figures are useful, but they answer different questions:

Finding What it measures What it does not prove
WEF: 170 million jobs created and 92 million displaced by 2030 Employer expectations combined with ILO employment data A guaranteed outcome or a robotics-only forecast
WEF: about 5 million net jobs displaced by robotics and autonomous systems Expected technology-related job change in its employer survey Actual future layoffs
ILO: roughly one in four workers in occupations with some GenAI exposure Task-level exposure to generative AI One in four jobs being eliminated
IMF: nearly 40% of global jobs exposed to AI-driven change Potential for AI-related change Full automation or observed job loss
OECD: about 28% of jobs in OECD countries at the highest risk of automation OECD-country average risk estimate Certain displacement
WEF: 162 robots per 10,000 employees in 2023 Global average industrial-robot density Robot use in every sector or country

Conclusion: technology changes possibilities; institutions shape outcomes

Automation and robotics will eliminate some tasks, reduce demand for some roles and create new work. But the central story is not a simple contest between humans and machines. It is the redesign of work: which tasks are delegated, which remain human, who is trained, who carries responsibility and who receives the productivity gains.

Workers can improve their position by combining domain expertise with digital fluency, judgment and relationship skills. Employers can make automation safer and more productive by involving workers, preserving learning pathways and measuring job quality. Governments can reduce avoidable harm through training, social protection, competition policy and enforceable standards.

The future of work is therefore not merely discovered in a technology demonstration. It is designed through business decisions, labour institutions and public policy.
