ASML did not take control of chipmaking as a whole. It built an unusually strong position at one crucial step: lithography, the process that projects patterns onto silicon wafers. Its clearest strategic bottleneck is extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. ASML says it remains the only manufacturer of EUV systems, while Canon and Nikon still compete in deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography.
That position grew over decades, through successive improvements to lithography platforms, close work with customers and suppliers, and the difficult industrialization of EUV. The chessboard metaphor fits a company that became indispensable to part of advanced chip production—not one that controls every tool, supplier, or decision in semiconductor manufacturing.
What ASML makes—and what its machines do
ASML sells lithography systems and related products and services to semiconductor manufacturers. In lithography, light and precision optics project a pattern onto a wafer coated with light-sensitive material. Shorter-wavelength light can help print smaller features, but a lithography machine is only one part of a complex manufacturing flow; it does not make a finished chip on its own.
ASML’s business extends beyond scanners. Its 2025 annual-report materials describe a broader portfolio that includes metrology, inspection, computational lithography, and support. These capabilities help customers measure and optimize the wider patterning process rather than treating the scanner as a standalone tool.

How a precarious venture built a platform
1984: a venture with a long road ahead
Philips and semiconductor-equipment company ASM International formed ASM Lithography in 1984 to develop lithography systems. Philips’ wafer-stepper work contributed to the venture’s starting point. ASML’s official history describes its early years as a fragile period: the young company had few customers and needed continued investment to establish itself.
The PAS 5500 helped win customers
In the 1990s, the PAS 5500 platform combined productivity and resolution in ways that helped ASML win important customers. That customer base mattered beyond the success of one product: it gave the company a foundation on which to improve and scale later systems.
Platform improvements changed the contest
In the 2000s, ASML developed immersion lithography to improve resolution and TWINSCAN dual-stage technology to raise productivity. It also pursued what it calls “holistic lithography”: combining scanners with measurement and process optimization. The strategic effect was cumulative. Rather than relying on a single breakthrough, ASML expanded the performance of its systems and the surrounding process capabilities.
Why EUV became the strategic bottleneck
EUV promised a way to print smaller patterns, but turning that promise into a dependable production technology required an unusually difficult engineering and industrialization effort. ASML says EUV took more than two decades to develop and that it invested more than €6 billion in EUV research and development over 17 years. It began shipping EUV prototype tools in 2010; ASML says customers began ordering production-ready NXE:3400 systems in batches in 2016.

The light itself creates a distinctive engineering challenge. EUV light is absorbed by ordinary materials, so the system uses mirrors rather than ordinary transmissive lenses. ASML’s partner account describes optics built from more than 100 layers of precision-engineered materials. Producing and integrating a light source, optics, scanner, and manufacturing-ready system made EUV a long-running industrial program, not simply a matter of designing a machine with a shorter wavelength.
A capability assembled across companies
ASML’s position was not built by ASML alone. Carl Zeiss SMT is a key optics partner, and Cymer contributes light-source technology. ASML acquired Cymer in 2013 to accelerate light-source development. Its official history also documents a long-standing Zeiss partnership and broader collaboration with research and industrial partners.
This supplier network is part of the explanation for why EUV leadership is hard to reproduce. The capability resides not just in an individual scanner design, but in specialized components, years of process learning, supplier coordination, and customer-site experience. That is an interpretation of the documented chronology, not a claim that no other company could ever develop a competing system.
What the market figures do—and do not—show
The European Commission’s 2026 staff working document reports market figures for 2023. They show the scale of ASML’s position in that market year, not a current 2026 market-share measurement.
| Measure | Reported value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ASML share of lithography sales | 92% | European Commission figure for 2023; not a 2026 share estimate. |
| ASML share of EUV lithography | 100% | European Commission figure for 2023; ASML’s 2025 annual report separately says it remains the only EUV-system manufacturer. |
| Global lithography sales | USD 25.1 billion | European Commission figure for 2023. |
The figures support a claim of overwhelming strength in lithography and exclusivity in the EUV segment for the stated year. They do not mean ASML makes every semiconductor production tool, that every fab uses only ASML equipment, or that it has no lithography competitors. ASML’s SEC filing identifies Canon and Nikon as DUV competitors. EUV leadership and competition across the broader lithography market are different claims.
How the roadmap keeps the position in motion
ASML’s 2025 reporting describes continued development across its EUV and packaging portfolio. It reports the NXE:3800E EUV system, the first full-specification TWINSCAN EXE:5200B shipment to a customer, and its first advanced-packaging product shipment. The EXE line is part of the move toward High-NA EUV, a next system generation whose optics ASML is developing with Carl Zeiss SMT.
A roadmap is strategically important because the advantage is not permanent by definition. ASML and its suppliers must continue developing systems, while chipmakers must decide how and when to use them in production. The company’s reporting describes products and shipments, but those milestones should not be mistaken for a guarantee of future demand or technical success.

Customer concentration
ASML’s 2025 annual filing identifies customer concentration as a business risk: it sells to a relatively small number of customers. That makes customer investment decisions important to the company, even when its technology occupies a critical place in chip production. The filing identifies a risk, not a forecast of a particular customer’s spending.

Export licensing
The same filing says EUV systems, specified DUV immersion systems, and some other products require export licenses under applicable Dutch, U.S., and other laws. The relevant requirement depends on product category and applicable rules; it should not be collapsed into a blanket statement that all ASML sales to a particular country are prohibited.
Demand and execution
ASML’s annual report also discusses market-demand and technology-development risks, including the need for continued progress by ASML and its suppliers. A critical supplier can still face changing customer demand, difficult development work, and constraints in the specialized supply chain on which its products depend.
The strategic lesson
ASML’s rise was a long accumulation of advantages: an early platform that won customers, productivity and resolution improvements, broader process integration, and the sustained work needed to industrialize EUV. Partnerships with specialized suppliers helped make that system possible, while customer collaboration gave the technology a path into production. The result is a strategic bottleneck in EUV—not ownership of the entire chipmaking chessboard.
