For Indian dividend income, the amount withheld as tax (TDS) is not necessarily your final tax bill. Report gross dividends as income from other sources, then calculate your overall liability under the rules for the relevant tax year and your circumstances. The governing Act also depends on when the dividend was credited or paid: events through 31 March 2026 fall under the Income Tax Act, 1961; events from 1 April 2026 fall under the Income Tax Act, 2025. This guidance reflects official material available on 4 October 2026; check the current rules for your tax year and status.
How are dividends on Indian shares taxed?
Dividends are reported as income from other sources. The notified return form’s Schedule OS asks for gross dividend income and separates certain dividend categories. Report the gross amount rather than treating the amount received after withholding as the income to report. Reconcile the figures with your broker, bank and tax records.

The applicable Act depends on the date the dividend was credited or paid. The Income Tax Department says the Income Tax Act, 1961 applies to such events through 31 March 2026, while the Income Tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026. The provisions have been renumbered and consolidated, so use the reference that applies to the event date. The Department says TDS rates and monetary thresholds were retained under the transition guidance. Income Tax Department TDS Compliance FAQs and its Income Tax Act, 2025 transition guidance explain the change.

No. TDS is tax collected during the year; it does not by itself determine the recipient’s complete liability. Your final calculation depends on your taxable income, applicable regime, residency and other relevant circumstances. Any tax already withheld is considered in settling the final amount.

The Government of India’s Finance Bill, 2026 schedule specifies withholding rates of 10% for the dividend category it identifies and 20% for other dividend income. These are withholding rates under that schedule, not universal final tax rates for every investor. Check the enacted rules and the treatment applicable to your status and payment date. How do tax regime and total income affect your bill?
Your dividend is considered alongside your other taxable income; the TDS percentage should not be mistaken for the rate that applies to your personal tax calculation. For the AY 2026-27 guidance, the Income Tax Department lists these new-regime slabs:
| Taxable income band | Rate listed in AY 2026-27 guidance |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4 lakh | Nil |
| Above ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh | 5% |
| Above ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh | 10% |
| Above ₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh | 15% |
| Above ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh | 20% |
| Above ₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh | 25% |
| Above ₹24 lakh | 30% |
The same AY 2026-27 guidance states that eligible taxpayers under the new regime with total income up to ₹12 lakh may receive a section 87A rebate of ₹60,000. Eligibility conditions matter, and these figures apply to the stated assessment year only; do not carry them into later years without checking the relevant guidance. Where do I report dividend income in my ITR?
Enter gross dividend income in the return’s “Income from other sources” schedule, Schedule OS. The notified form distinguishes dividend categories, so use the appropriate category rather than assuming every dividend belongs in one undifferentiated field. The current notified return form is Notification No. 47 of 2026. Notification No. 47 of 2026.
Which ITR form should I use if I received dividends?
Receiving dividends alone does not determine your return form. The choice depends on your full income profile and whether you meet the form’s conditions.
ITR-1
ITR-1 is limited to qualifying resident individuals who meet its detailed conditions. The AY 2026-27 guidance lists exclusions that include certain capital gains, holdings in unlisted equity shares, foreign assets or foreign-source income, company directors, and total income over ₹50 lakh. Review the current form’s complete eligibility rules before using it. Income Tax Department return-form guidance.
ITR-2
ITR-2 is for individuals, resident or non-resident, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) with income other than income chargeable under “Profits and gains of business or profession.” If you have business or professional income, or otherwise do not meet ITR-1 conditions, check the applicable return guidance rather than choosing a form based only on dividend income. When must you pay tax on dividends?
The dividend payment date, TDS withholding, advance-tax instalments, the return-filing deadline and payment of any balance due are distinct matters. The official material cited here does not establish one deadline that applies to every investor for additional tax or return filing. Confirm the current dates for your taxpayer category and relevant year on the Income Tax Department portal. Do not treat the date you receive a dividend as a universal deadline for paying your final tax.
