In India, an employer-paid bonus belongs in the salary-income calculation; interest and dividends are reported as income from other sources; and a profit from selling an investment may be a capital gain. These categories do not share one tax rate. The result depends on the applicable tax year, the type of income or asset, relevant transaction and holding-period conditions, and your full tax circumstances.
Start by identifying what the payment represents
“Investment returns” is not a single tax category. Interest received on a deposit, a dividend paid on shares, and a profit made by selling shares are different kinds of receipts. A bonus paid by an employer is different again: it is considered in the salary-income calculation rather than treated as an investment return.

| Receipt or event | Tax category to investigate | What determines the result |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus paid by an employer | Salary income | Your complete salary and income, the applicable tax year, regime, and circumstances. A separate flat “bonus rate” is not established by the official guidance cited here. |
| Interest received | Income from other sources, with return schedules distinguishing types such as savings-bank and deposit interest | The interest source, tax year, and any deduction for which you qualify. |
| Dividend received | Income from other sources | The applicable law and your circumstances; return schedules also separate certain dividend categories. |
| Profit on selling an investment | Potentially capital gains | The asset, its holding period, transfer date, statutory category, and any qualifying conditions. |
The Income Tax Department’s return schedules distinguish these income categories rather than treating every receipt as a common “investment return.” Classify each amount by what happened: was it paid as compensation, received as interest or a distribution, or earned through selling an asset?

Which tax-year rules apply?
For the current transition, the Income Tax Department describes Tax Year 2026–27 as corresponding to financial year 2026–27 and says that the Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from Tax Year 2026–27 onward. The department also says dues through financial year 2025–26 are dealt with under the Income-tax Act, 1961. The dates matter: guidance or forms for an earlier assessment year are not automatically a complete guide to Tax Year 2026–27.

When preparing a return, use the rules and return schedules for the relevant tax year, not simply the newest page you find or a prior-year example. For investment disposals, record the actual transaction date; for salary, interest, and dividends, keep the dates and statements showing when amounts were received or credited. The tax-year framework and the type of income are separate questions, and both must be established before applying a rate or deduction.
How an employer bonus fits into salary
A normal employment bonus is compensation and should be considered together with the rest of your salary income. It does not receive a universal, stand-alone tax rate just because it is called a bonus. Your final liability depends on the full computation for the relevant tax year, including your other income and the applicable regime. The tax category explains where to start; it does not by itself tell you the amount due.
The Income Tax Department’s regime FAQ says the new regime is the default and refers to a standard deduction of ₹50,000, or salary if lower, under both regimes from AY 2024–25 onward. That is historical context, not a complete statement of Tax Year 2026–27 law. Do not use that older FAQ alone to calculate a current-year bill or to decide which regime applies to you.

When a bonus was paid in advance or arrears
A lump sum received in advance or as arrears can raise a different question from an ordinary bonus paid for the current period. The department’s Form 10E User Manual discusses relief under section 89 for salary or profit in lieu of salary received in advance or arrears, and identifies Form 10E as part of that relief process. It is not a blanket exemption for bonuses, nor does the fact that a payment is called a bonus automatically establish eligibility.
The manual says: “It is advisable that Form 10E is filed before filing Income Tax Return.” If you believe your salary or profit in lieu of salary qualifies for the described relief, check the relevant year’s requirements and file the form before filing your income-tax return. Do not assume the relief applies without checking the payment circumstances and the rules for that year.
How interest and dividends are reported
Interest
The Income Tax Department’s 2026 return schedule places interest under income from other sources and gives separate entries for savings-bank interest and interest from bank, post-office, and cooperative-society deposits. Those entries help identify the kind of income to report; they are not a statement that every interest receipt has the same tax rate or that every taxpayer is entitled to the same deduction.

Collect statements from each institution and match them to the relevant tax year. Distinguish savings-account interest from deposit interest rather than combining them into a single unlabeled total. Whether a deduction is available, and how much, depends on the tax year and your eligibility. The official category alone is not enough to determine either the final tax or a deduction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDividends
Dividends are also shown in the “income from other sources” schedule, which provides separate lines for specified dividend categories. A dividend is a distribution received from an investment; it is not the same event as selling the investment. Keep dividend statements separate from sale records so that a distribution is not mistaken for a capital gain.
The schedule’s classification does not settle the personal tax consequence by itself. Apply the law for the relevant tax year to the dividend category and your circumstances, rather than borrowing a capital-gains rate or treating all investment receipts alike.

How gains from selling investments are classified
A profit on disposal may be a capital gain. The applicable category and rate turn on what was sold, the relevant holding period, the transaction date, and whether statutory conditions are met. “Shares” or “funds” alone is not enough information to select a rate: the official schedules distinguish asset types and specified categories.
The Income Tax Department’s 2026 return schedules list a 20% rate for specified short-term capital gains covered by section 111A. They also list 12.5% for specified long-term capital-gain categories, including qualifying gains under section 112A. These are rates attached to defined categories, not a general rate for all investment returns, all share sales, or all taxpayers. A transaction must meet the relevant statutory conditions before either rate can be treated as applicable.
| Specified category in 2026 schedules | Listed rate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term gains covered by section 111A | 20% | Applies to the specified category, not to every short-term gain or every investment sale. |
| Specified long-term capital gains, including qualifying section 112A gains | 12.5% | Applies to qualifying categories and conditions, including those relevant to listed equity shares, equity-oriented fund units, or business-trust units under section 112A. |
The listed percentages are from the Income Tax Department’s 2026 return schedules. They are not average tax rates and should not be applied to interest, dividends, salary bonuses, or a sale without first checking the asset, holding period, transaction details, and statutory requirements. The schedules do not provide enough information to calculate an individual’s liability from the rate alone.

A practical way to prepare your calculation
Before estimating tax or completing a return, assemble the documents that establish both the amount and its category. Then work through the classifications in order. If you cannot verify a relevant date or condition, resolve that point before relying on a special-rate category.
- Identify the tax year. Decide which year the income or transfer belongs to and use that year’s applicable law and return schedules. For Tax Year 2026–27, account for the department’s stated transition to the Income-tax Act, 2025.
- Collect salary records. Gather payslips and Form 16, including the employer’s record of any bonus. Consider the bonus with the complete salary-income picture rather than calculating it at an assumed separate rate.
- Separate interest and dividends. Use bank, post-office, cooperative-society, and investment statements to identify savings-bank interest, deposit interest, and dividends. Keep each category identifiable for the relevant return schedule.
- Document each disposal. For every investment sold, retain purchase and sale records, the asset description, and the dates needed to establish the holding period and transfer year. Check whether the asset and transaction satisfy the conditions for any specified capital-gains category.
- Review your full circumstances. Residence status, total income, deductions, applicable regime, transaction dates, and eligibility conditions can affect the result. An asset label or receipt category by itself cannot produce a personalized tax calculation.
- Use the correct return schedule and forms. Report each type in its applicable income schedule. If seeking section 89 relief for qualifying salary or profit in lieu of salary received in advance or arrears, review Form 10E requirements and timing before filing the return.
What you can—and cannot—conclude from the category
The category tells you which rules and return schedule to investigate. It does not establish a final tax amount. The official forms separate income categories and specified-rate capital-gains items, but the broad labels in this article do not determine an individual’s residence status, eligible deductions, total income, regime, asset-specific treatment, or satisfaction of statutory conditions.
Accordingly, use the 20% and 12.5% figures only as the specified 2026 schedule rates described above. For a personal estimate, apply the relevant current-year law to your records and circumstances. The material cited here supports the classification framework and those limited schedule rates, but it is not a complete individualized application of all Tax Year 2026–27 provisions.
