For shoppers, that can mean finding clothes that fit while measurements are still changing. For retailers, it creates a planning challenge—not a uniform shift in demand or proof that any size range is disappearing.
What GLP-1 use means for clothing purchases
In the United States, 23% of households used GLP-1 medications as of September 2025, according to Circana in 2026—four percentage points more than in 2024. In a Circana survey of GLP-1 users, 80% expected to need new clothing because of size changes, while 55% said they had already bought clothing or footwear primarily for that reason. A separate PwC survey found that 73% of current GLP-1 users surveyed reported a meaningful clothing-size change. PwC’s May 2026 survey included 3,089 respondents and was designed to compare GLP-1 user groups, not to represent all consumers. Its spending analysis is a separate measure: PwC reported that 26% spent more on clothes overall and that apparel spending was up 9.9% after six to eight months. Why the retail effect is not one-directional
Some shoppers need new sizes, but the evidence does not establish how much of the apparel market’s movement is caused by GLP-1 use, how long a person typically shops between sizes, or a universal direction of demand. Circana describes early signals that include wardrobe purchases tied to size change and shifts in bra-size mix. It also reports higher indexing among users in their first year of treatment, compared with before treatment, for active shorts, casual pants, jeans, bras and dresses. Those are directional findings, not a retailer revenue forecast. Retailers also report different experiences. Torrid chief commercial officer Ashlee Wheeler said, “We have not seen any appreciable shift in our size-selling data across customer cohorts that would indicate our customers are sizing out of our brand.” That is Torrid’s account of its own sales data, not evidence that no change is occurring elsewhere. What retailers can change to help shoppers through fit transitions
Offer more fit flexibility
Adjustable waistbands, ties and other adaptable construction can make a garment more forgiving as fit needs change. Vogue Business reported that 81% of its survey respondents said they would pay more for a garment designed to fit more comfortably, including adjustable elements; 47% cited adjustable elements as a feature they value. The article’s exact survey year was not confirmed, so these are best read as responses from that survey rather than a current market-wide estimate. Vogue Business on sizing and shopping

For shoppers, adjustable-waist jeans, ties and similar details are options to consider when a fixed fit is uncomfortable. A tailor may be useful for occasionwear that is worth altering. These are practical choices, not a guarantee that a garment will remain suitable through every size change.
Make fit information and size availability useful
Torrid described using live models for fitting decisions and stretch fabrics in its clothing. Such approaches can help shoppers assess how a garment sits and moves, but they do not replace access to a range of sizes. Retailers need to consider both fit flexibility and which sizes are actually available in stores and online; a strategy for one customer group should not be mistaken for a universal solution.

Support exchanges, styling and temporary wardrobes
PwC says uncertainty about where a shopper’s size will settle can lead some people to delay buying a full wardrobe. It identifies flexible fits, exchanges, alterations, styling support and loyalty approaches as possible ways for retailers to respond. These are recommendations, not proven results. Retail TouchPoints also points to Stitch Fix styling guidance and Nuuly monthly clothing-rental swaps as examples of services that may help during a transition. Plan for eventwear on a shorter timeline
Bridal clothing shows how fit uncertainty can intersect with firm event dates. Axios reported that David’s Bridal introduced a Fit Guarantee. The company said 20% of its bridal customers had shifted to shorter shopping timelines, rush orders had risen 50% over the prior year, and alterations within three weeks of an event were up 8%. These are company-reported figures in Axios’s May 12, 2026, story, not independently audited industry statistics. David’s Bridal CEO Kelly Cook told Axios, “The anxiety around fit has always been there. What shoppers can do while their fit is changing
- Choose adaptable details—such as adjustable waistbands or ties—when they suit the garment and your comfort.
- For expensive or date-sensitive clothing, ask about alteration timing, exchange windows, return costs and any fit-guarantee conditions before buying.
- If you are buying fewer items because your future size is uncertain, consider whether a styling or rental service fits your budget and needs; compare its actual terms rather than assuming swaps are free or unlimited.
- Use size charts and garment measurements as a starting point, and prioritize how an item fits now. No source establishes how long any individual will remain between sizes.
What retailers should avoid assuming
A changing customer’s fit needs do not mean that plus-size shoppers have disappeared or that demand is moving in one direction across every brand. Torrid’s reported data is a reminder that customer patterns differ. Retailers can monitor their own size curves and customer feedback while preserving access across size ranges, offering adaptable designs and making exchange or alteration policies clear. The available figures support a wardrobe-transition challenge for some consumers; they do not establish a single industry-wide response or outcome.
