After Nikesh asked whether Sama could return to a demanding work life of long hours and frequent travel, Sama says he began to wonder whether Nikesh might offer him a job at SoftBank.
What happened in Ibiza?
In an excerpt from The Money Trap: Grand Fortunes and Lost Illusions Inside the Tech Bubble, published by Scroll on September 20, 2024, Sama recalls going to Ibiza with his wife, Maya, Nikesh, and friends after Nikesh’s wedding. They went to Pacha after spending the day and evening together. After the club, Nikesh invited the group to his hotel terrace.
At dawn, Nikesh asked Sama: “Alok, do you think you could go back to your old life, work sixty hours a week, on the road all the time?” The line is dialogue as Sama remembers it in his memoir, not an independently recorded interview quotation. Sama says he was unsure and had “been there, done that.” Read the Scroll excerpt.
How did that connect to a possible SoftBank job?
Sama writes that Nikesh’s question prompted him to wonder whether a job offer might follow. Back in their room, he told Maya, “I think Nikesh might offer me a job.” Maya asked whether he would consider working for a Japanese bank. Sama replied that SoftBank was not a bank and described the company and its founder, Masayoshi Son, from his perspective in the memoir.

So the partying did not itself secure Sama a position. In his account, it brought the group together socially; the consequential moment was the later conversation about whether he wanted to return to his former work routine.

The excerpt is Sama’s personal recollection of when he began to consider a possible role. It does not provide the subsequent recruitment steps, the date of an offer, or the exact date he joined SoftBank. It should not be treated as a complete or independently corroborated hiring chronology.
