Their worth depends on the redemption you can actually make: a transfer to a partner award, a booking through Amex, a statement credit, a gift card, or another option. The practical value is the net value of that specific redemption after required points, taxes, fees, restrictions, and the effort involved.
What Membership Rewards is and who can use it
Membership Rewards is American Express’s points program for eligible, enrolled U.S. products. You need at least one eligible product enrolled in a Rewards Account. American Express may automatically link multiple eligible products, but the products attached to the account can affect which redemption choices are available.

Most card products provide access to the available redemption options. Accounts linked only to certain legacy cards, and accounts linked only to checking products, can have limitations under the applicable terms. If an option is missing from your account, check the exact products enrolled before assuming the program has removed it for everyone.
For eligible purchases on an enrolled card, the Membership Rewards terms describe earning one point per dollar, subject to exclusions, product-specific bonus rates, and other card terms. That base rate is not a promise that every transaction earns one point per dollar. Bonus categories, welcome offers, business-card rules, returns, fees, and excluded transactions can change the result.

Why there is no single value per point
American Express’s FAQ states: “The value of Membership Rewards points varies according to how you choose to use them.” That is the central rule. A point used for one redemption can be worth materially more or less than a point used for another, and the options shown to one cardmember may not be available to another.
Evaluate a redemption rather than assigning a permanent value to your entire balance. For a travel award, compare the cash price of the same itinerary with the points required and the taxes or fees you must still pay. A simple calculation is:
Value per point in cents = (comparable cash price − award taxes and fees) ÷ points required × 100.
For example, if a comparable ticket costs $500 and the award requires 30,000 points plus $11.20 in taxes, the arithmetic is ($500 − $11.20) ÷ 30,000 × 100, or about 1.63 cents per point. This is an illustration of the method, not a published American Express valuation. Use the price and award available for your dates, route, cabin, and traveler count.
For a statement credit, gift card, shopping purchase, or another fixed redemption, use the rate displayed in your Membership Rewards account. Divide the dollar credit or purchase value by the points deducted. Do not carry a travel estimate over to these options unless the account shows the same rate.

A theoretical travel value is not useful if the award is unavailable, requires inconvenient dates, carries high surcharges, or is for a trip you would not otherwise take. A lower but immediate and flexible redemption can be the better choice when it meets your actual need.
Membership Rewards redemption options
American Express describes several broad ways to use points. Eligibility, rates, and availability depend on the linked product and can change.

How partner transfers work
A transfer moves Membership Rewards points into a participating airline or hotel loyalty account. The process has several irreversible checkpoints, so treat it as a transaction to verify, not a way to reserve speculative value.
- Confirm that your product is eligible. Sign in to the Rewards Account and verify that the transfer option and intended partner appear for your account.
- Link the loyalty account. American Express requires a participating partner account. The destination account generally must belong to the cardmember or an eligible Additional Card Member. An Additional Card must have been issued for at least 90 days before it can be linked to that member’s partner account.
- Find the award first. Search the partner’s program for the exact dates, route, cabin, guests, and number of seats or rooms. American Express advises checking availability and the points required before transferring.
- Calculate the complete cost. Record the partner points required, taxes, carrier surcharges, booking fees, and any Membership Rewards transfer fee. Compare that total with the cash alternative.
- Check the displayed ratio and account details. Ratios can differ by partner and can be revised. Make sure the loyalty number and recipient name are correct before submitting.
- Transfer only after the award is available. The Membership Rewards terms say that once points are transferred, the transfer cannot be reversed and the partner loyalty program’s terms and conditions apply.
For U.S. airline transfers, the terms specify an excise-tax offset fee of $0.0006 per point, capped at $99. The cap means a transfer of 165,000 points or more reaches the stated maximum, but the fee still needs to be included in your comparison. The rule applies to U.S. airline transfers; do not automatically apply it to hotel transfers or other redemption types.
Transfer partners and ratios: a dated snapshot
The American Express transfer page accessed on October 10, 2026 displayed 20 participating partners: 16 airlines and four hotels. That is a live-page snapshot, not a permanent count. American Express says participating partners and rewards can change, so confirm the current page and your account before moving points.

A ratio that produces more destination points is not automatically better. Airline and hotel programs price awards in their own currencies, with their own calendars, surcharges, expiration rules, and cancellation policies. Compare what those destination points can buy on your dates.
A practical framework for choosing a redemption
1. Start with the specific use
Decide whether you need a particular flight, hotel stay, statement credit, gift card, or purchase. A transfer is most defensible when you have a defined award and a realistic booking plan. If you only want to reduce a bill, compare the statement-credit rate directly instead of transferring speculatively.
2. Compare like with like
For travel, price the same itinerary, cabin, dates, passenger count, baggage assumptions, and cancellation conditions. A cheap economy fare is not comparable with a business-class award, and a flexible cash ticket is not comparable with a restrictive award without acknowledging the difference.
3. Include every required payment
Subtract award taxes and fees from the comparable cash price when calculating travel value. Add any transfer fee, booking fee, resort charge, or unavoidable surcharge. If a redemption leaves you paying cash for part of the purchase, include that cash in the comparison.
4. Price flexibility and effort
Ask how easily you can change or cancel the booking, whether the award inventory is scarce, and how much time you will spend searching. A transfer cannot be undone, while a simpler redemption may preserve flexibility even if its mathematical rate is lower.

5. Transfer the smallest amount that completes the booking
Do not move a large balance merely because a partner account can receive it. Transfer only the points needed for a confirmed reservation, plus any amount required by the partner’s rules. Leaving points in Membership Rewards preserves access to other options if your plans change.

American Express’s June 2026 update lists several changes:
- Transfers to Etihad Guest Miles ended June 30, 2026.
- Pay with Points at JustGiving ended April 30, 2026.
- Pay with Points at NYC Taxi and Saks Fifth Avenue ended September 15, 2026.
- Effective March 1, 2026, the Cathay Pacific ratio changed from 1 Membership Rewards point to 1 Asia Mile to 5 Membership Rewards points to 4 Asia Miles.
The update itself cautions that its summary may not reflect the most current program status. Use the current Membership Rewards terms, transfer page, and account notices when a decision depends on a partner, merchant, ratio, or redemption category.
Common problems and how to avoid them
The transfer option is missing
Check whether an eligible product is enrolled and whether your account is a legacy-card-only or checking-only arrangement with limited options. Availability can also vary by the product linked to the Rewards Account.

Use the ratio displayed during your current transfer. Published examples and remembered ratios can become obsolete, as the Cathay change demonstrates.

The award disappears after you transfer
That is the key risk of transferring before confirming availability. American Express recommends checking the partner’s award space and points requirement first; because transfers are final, wait until the award is genuinely bookable.
The destination account rejects the transfer
Review the account owner and Additional Card rules. The destination generally must belong to the cardmember or an eligible Additional Card Member, and an Additional Card must have been issued at least 90 days before linking it to that member’s partner account.
The travel value looks high but the trip is not useful
Recalculate using a trip you would actually take. A high cents-per-point result based on an expensive or unavailable itinerary is not a benefit you can realize. Compare a bookable alternative and include the convenience and flexibility you give up.

- Which eligible products are linked to your Rewards Account?
- What exact redemption rate is displayed for this transaction?
- For travel, is the identical itinerary available with the required points?
- What taxes, fees, and U.S. airline excise-tax offset fee apply?
- Are the partner’s cancellation and expiration rules acceptable?
- Could your plans change before you use the points?
- If transferring, have you confirmed the loyalty number, recipient name, ratio, and award inventory?
Membership Rewards points are therefore best treated as a flexible balance whose value must be established at the moment of redemption. Keep the points in the Rewards Account while comparing genuine, available options; transfer only when the specific partner award and its complete cost justify an irreversible move.
