In Brad Howell’s later recollection, some Allis-Chalmers employees learned that Deutz had bought most of the company’s agricultural division when they saw Deutz-Allis decals on his tractor at a pull in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The episode took place in late June 1985, according to a 2024 account by Ryan Roossinck; it is a memorable anecdote, not proof that all employees were unaware of the sale.
What happened at the Badger Grand Nationals?
Roossinck’s July 31, 2024, account recounts a story Howell told him during a later conversation about tractor pulling and Howell’s family dealership history. Before Howell and his wife Tammy left for the Badger Grand Nationals, Allis-Chalmers engineering contact Lloyd Sippel called. He said he was sending Howell a new set of decals and a nose badge, and told him that Deutz had bought Allis-Chalmers.
When Howell opened the package, it contained Deutz-Allis decals and a badge. At the late-June 1985 pull in Elkhorn, about 40 miles southwest of West Allis, the markings attracted a crowd Roossinck identifies as Allis-Chalmers employees. They asked Howell about the change in ownership. Roossinck reports that Howell was dumbfounded and often replied, “I’m pretty sure Deutz bought your employer!” That line is Howell’s reported recollection as relayed in the 2024 article, not a contemporary transcript.
Which buyout was it?
The story concerns Deutz’s 1985 acquisition of most of Allis-Chalmers’ agricultural or farm-equipment division. A contemporary UPI report published May 23, 1985 describes Deutz’s acquisition of the farm-equipment operations. Roossinck’s account dates the official purchase of most of the agricultural division to May 25, 1985. The UPI report establishes transaction context; it predates the tractor pull and does not verify what employees knew there.

This was not the separate sale of the compressor business. A 1987 federal district court opinion, Henne, discusses a different transaction involving A-C Compressor Corporation in February 1985.
What the anecdote does—and does not—show
In Howell’s telling, employees noticed the new Deutz-Allis markings, gathered around his trailer, and asked him about the ownership change. That suggests at least some people at the event had not heard the news, or did not recognize what it meant, by then. The account does not establish what notices those employees had received, how many were unaware, or whether management withheld information. It should be understood as one participant’s retrospective recollection, not a company-wide notification record.

What Howell was pulling
Howell brought an 8030 diesel Super Stock tractor to the event. Roossinck reports that he won the Super Stock class that weekend in a large field. The contrast makes the story stick: the freshly branded tractor was visible to people whose employer was part of the transaction it signaled.
