Allegiant is adding Boeing 737 MAX aircraft while gradually retiring some older Airbus planes—not replacing its entire fleet at once. Its first-quarter 2026 plan forecast 25 Boeing 737-8200s and 99 Airbus A320- and A319-family aircraft in service at year end. Allegiant says the MAX offers better fuel efficiency and reliability, but deliveries and retirement decisions shape the pace. A proposed Sun Country Airlines acquisition also means the combined airline is not expected to be all Boeing.
What Allegiant’s fleet shift means
Allegiant’s move is a phased change in the aircraft it uses, not an immediate switch from Airbus to Boeing. The company began ordering Boeing aircraft in 2022, and its first MAX aircraft arrived in late 2024. Airbus aircraft remained the larger part of Allegiant’s standalone fleet in the company’s latest published fleet plan.
In its first-quarter 2026 plan, Allegiant forecast 25 Boeing 737-8200s in service by year end, alongside 99 Airbus aircraft: 71 A320s configured for 180 seats, two A320s with 177 seats, and 26 A319s. These figures were management estimates, expressly subject to change. Allegiant’s first-quarter 2026 results and fleet plan provide the forecast.
How the transition developed
The 2022 Boeing order
On January 5, 2022, Allegiant announced its first direct Boeing order: 50 aircraft, with options for 50 more. The order covered the 737-7 and the higher-capacity 737-8-200. Allegiant then operated 108 Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft. The order created room for both growth and fleet retirements; it was not an announcement that the Airbus fleet would be replaced immediately. Boeing’s order announcement records the aircraft and order terms.

Deliveries and the 2026 plan
Allegiant’s 2025 shareholder letter said 16 MAX aircraft were in service at the end of 2025, with 33 additional firm deliveries scheduled and 80 options in the order book. The next published fleet plan projected 25 737-8200s by year end 2026. Those are company-reported counts and a forecast, not a guarantee that deliveries or fleet totals will match the plan. Allegiant’s 2025 shareholder letter reports the year-end 2025 figures.
Why Allegiant says it wants the MAX
Allegiant has cited fuel use, reliability, and fleet economics as reasons for adding the MAX. In its 2025 shareholder letter, the company said the aircraft consume roughly 20% less fuel than its A320s and have similar annual ownership costs. It also described them as more reliable. These are Allegiant’s comparisons; the company materials cited here do not provide independent testing to verify them.

The company has also framed the order as a way to gain flexibility for growth and replace aircraft. When announcing the order, then-chairman and CEO Maurice J. Gallagher Jr. said, “Our approach to fleet has always been opportunistic.” Allegiant’s 2025 shareholder letter later said MAX aircraft represented roughly 10% of its available seat miles in 2025. It expected that share to double in 2026 and projected the MAX would account for more than half of standalone flying by 2028. Those are company estimates and forecasts, not assured outcomes.
How Airbus retirements fit into the plan
Adding new aircraft is only one side of the transition. Allegiant’s annual filing said heavy maintenance needs on certain aging Airbus airframes, together with capacity constraints among maintenance, repair, and overhaul contractors, led it to identify aircraft for early retirement. The company said those retirements would coincide with deliveries under an amended Boeing agreement.

That timing matters: a planned retirement does not itself mean an aircraft has left the fleet, and a replacement depends on aircraft being delivered. Allegiant has disclosed that Boeing regulatory review or production limits could affect delivery schedules. The filing for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, describes those risks. Allegiant’s SEC filing discusses fleet and delivery risks.

In January 2026, Allegiant announced a definitive agreement to acquire Sun Country Airlines. The companies said the combined airline would operate both Airbus and Boeing aircraft, and projected a combined fleet of approximately 195 aircraft, with 30 on order and 80 options. Allegiant said the larger operation would be able to use its MAX fleet and order book more fully. The transaction announcement describes the projected fleet.

It is a proposed transaction and a company projection, not a completed merger or settled fleet plan. For Allegiant on a standalone basis, “Boeing-first” describes the direction of incoming aircraft; it should not be read as a claim that the combined airline will operate only Boeing aircraft.
