An airline credit is not the same as a refund, and its rules depend on why it was issued and how the airline classifies it. Before you accept or spend one, check whether you are entitled to a refund, when the credit expires, who can use it, which flights it covers, and what happens to any unused balance.
What an airline credit is—and why its label matters
An airline credit is a balance or voucher the airline issues after a ticket is canceled or travel is disrupted. The credit may be tied to a passenger, a reservation, a fare, or a particular set of eligible flights. Its name alone does not tell you all the rules: airlines can divide credits into different products with different redemption terms.

For example, American Airlines distinguishes between Flight Credit and Trip Credit. Its published Flight Credit terms specify eligible itineraries and restrict what the credit can pay for. That is a reason to read the terms attached to your particular credit rather than assume that an airline balance works like cash or can be used on any ticket.

A refund returns money through the applicable refund process; a credit is value to use toward eligible future travel under its conditions. If you have a choice between the two, the distinction affects how much flexibility you retain: a credit may have a deadline or limits on passenger and itinerary, while the refund question depends first on why your original trip changed or was canceled.

First determine whether you can choose a refund
The key first question is who changed the trip. A voluntary cancellation of an unchanged flight is not automatically refundable; the fare rules and airline terms govern what happens. A cancellation or qualifying significant schedule change made by the airline is different. Under U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) consumer guidance, if the airline cancels a flight or makes a qualifying significant change and you choose not to travel or accept an offered credit, you are entitled to a refund.
A credit offered instead of that refund must not obscure the refund choice. Do not treat the first option shown in a message or account as proof that it is the only option. Review the airline’s notice, look for the refund route, and contact the airline if the choices or eligibility are unclear. DOT guidance explains the refund right; it does not mean that every passenger who cancels for personal reasons can demand a refund.
Use this decision sequence
- Identify who initiated the change. Was the flight canceled or significantly changed by the airline, or did you decide to cancel an otherwise unchanged trip?
- Read the airline’s notice. Record the original itinerary, what changed, and the options the airline offered.
- If the airline made a qualifying change, check the refund option before accepting a credit. If you choose not to travel or accept the credit, DOT guidance says you are entitled to a refund in this situation.
- If you canceled voluntarily, check the ticket’s fare rules and the credit offer. Do not assume that the refund protections for airline cancellations apply.
- Save the outcome. Keep the cancellation or schedule-change notice, refund request, credit confirmation, and any terms provided with the credit.
How long airline credits last
There is no single expiration period that applies to every ordinary airline credit. The deadline depends on the credit type, how it was issued, the airline’s terms, and any applicable federal protections. The broad claim that all airline credits expire after one year—or that all of them last five years—is not reliable.

For credits or vouchers covered by DOT’s refund guidance when offered in lieu of a refund, validity must be at least five years, and material restrictions must be disclosed. That five-year minimum is tied to the covered category; it is not a promise that every ordinary credit has five years of validity. The DOT’s 2024 final rule also provides for transferable credits or vouchers valid for at least five years in defined circumstances involving a serious communicable disease, subject to the rule’s eligibility conditions. Those protections should not be generalized to unrelated cancellations or to every credit an airline issues.
Check what the deadline actually requires
An expiration date can govern different things. It may require you to book by a date, or it may require you to complete travel by that date. Those are materially different: a ticket booked before the deadline could still involve travel after it. Read the credit’s terms for the precise deadline and confirm with the airline if the wording is unclear.
Southwest’s current “About Flight Credits” support page says travel must be completed by the flight credit’s expiration date. It also says disruption-related credits may take up to 48 hours to reflect the accurate expiration date. If a Southwest credit arose from a disruption, check the account again after that period and verify the displayed deadline before relying on it.

Make an expiration record
- Write down the exact date shown for the specific credit.
- Record whether the terms require booking or completed travel by that date.
- Note the airline’s stated time frame for correcting or updating a disruption-related credit, if applicable.
- Set a reminder early enough to compare eligible travel and complete any required booking or trip before the relevant deadline.
- Save a screenshot or confirmation showing the balance and expiration terms; check the account again before booking if the deadline is near.
Who can use a credit, and can it be transferred?
Do not assume that a credit can be transferred just because it has a dollar value. The ordinary credit’s terms determine who may use it, and the answer can vary by credit type and circumstances. Some federal protections do require transferability for a defined category: under the DOT’s 2024 final rule, credits or vouchers offered in specified circumstances involving a serious communicable disease must be transferable and valid for at least five years, subject to the rule’s eligibility conditions. This is not a universal transfer right for every airline credit.

Look for the eligible passenger, whether a name change or transfer is permitted, any process required to complete it, and whether the rules differ for the particular kind of credit. If the terms do not clearly answer the question, ask the airline to confirm in writing before choosing a replacement flight.
What flights and charges a credit can cover
A credit’s usable value depends on more than its balance. The terms may limit eligible airlines, routes, marketing or operating carriers, and the types of charges it can pay. A credit that appears sufficient for a ticket may not cover every item in a booking, and a travel credit should not be assumed to pay for non-flight products or charges.

American’s published Flight Credit terms, for instance, limit redemption to air travel on specified American-marketed or operated flights and eligible partner itineraries, and exclude certain non-flight products and charges. The exact terms for a credit can be narrower or different, so use the issuing airline’s current policy and the credit-specific details as the authority for your booking.
Verify these details before searching or booking
- Issuer and credit type: Confirm which airline issued it and the exact name of the credit.
- Eligible passenger: Check whose name is attached and whether another traveler may use it.
- Eligible itinerary: Confirm permitted airlines, flight types, routes, and any partner-flight conditions.
- Eligible charges: Check whether it applies only to air travel or also to other items; do not infer coverage for fees or extras.
- Deadline: Confirm whether travel must be completed, or merely booked, by expiration.
- Remaining value: Ask how any balance is treated if the replacement ticket costs less.
What if the replacement ticket costs less?
There is no established one-size-fits-all residual-balance rule for ordinary airline credits. If the new ticket costs less than the credit, the unused amount might be handled according to that specific credit’s terms; do not assume it will remain available, be reissued, or be refunded. Confirm the treatment of leftover value before purchasing, especially if the fare difference is significant or the credit is close to expiring.

Refund or credit: compare the actual trade-offs
When the airline offers a credit, assess it against the refund option and your likely ability to use it. A credit may be practical if you expect to travel on an eligible itinerary and can meet its deadline. A refund may preserve more flexibility where you qualify for one and do not want to accept the credit’s limitations. The decision should be based on the applicable rights and the written terms—not simply on the credit’s face value.
| Question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Why did the trip change? | Whether you canceled voluntarily or the airline canceled or made a qualifying significant change. |
| Is a refund available? | For an airline cancellation or qualifying significant change, DOT guidance provides a refund if you choose not to travel or accept the offered credit. Voluntary cancellation depends on fare rules and airline terms. |
| When does the credit expire? | The exact date and whether the deadline is for booking or completing travel. |
| Who may use it? | The eligible passenger and whether transfer is allowed for this credit and circumstance. |
| What can it pay for? | Eligible airlines, itineraries, flight products, and charges. |
| What happens to any remainder? | The credit-specific rule for residual value after a lower-cost booking; no single rule is established for all ordinary credits. |
A safe workflow for using a credit
- Locate the credit details. Use the confirmation or the issuing airline’s account tools to identify the credit number, balance, passenger, type, and expiration terms.
- Check refund rights first if the airline changed your flight. If the change may qualify, review the refund option before accepting a credit.
- Confirm the usage rules with the issuing airline. Verify passenger eligibility, transfer rules, permitted itineraries, excluded charges, and any booking process required for this credit.
- Check the deadline before choosing dates. Establish whether travel must be completed by expiration. For a Southwest disruption-related credit, allow for the stated period of up to 48 hours for its accurate expiration date to appear.
- Compare the full booking cost with the credit. Review what the credit covers, what you must pay separately, and what happens if the ticket costs less.
- Keep the transaction record. Save the credit terms, booking confirmation, and any account information showing how much value remains and its deadline.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Accepting a credit before checking for a refund. If the airline canceled or made a qualifying significant change, first review whether you can decline the credit and receive a refund.
- Assuming every cancellation has the same rights. A voluntary cancellation of an unchanged flight does not automatically qualify for a refund under the airline-disruption guidance.
- Treating five years as a universal expiry period. That minimum applies to defined covered credits and vouchers, not every ordinary airline balance.
- Assuming a credit can be transferred. Check its terms; the special transferability protection applies only in defined circumstances and subject to eligibility conditions.
- Reading an expiration date without its mechanics. Verify whether the deadline applies to booking or completed travel.
- Assuming leftover value is preserved. Get the residual-balance rule for the specific credit before buying a cheaper ticket.
- Booking based only on the face value. Confirm eligible flights and charges so that the credit’s displayed amount is not mistaken for unrestricted payment value.
Sources and policy scope
The federal refund and covered-credit protections described here come from current U.S. Department of Transportation consumer guidance and its 2024 final rule. They concern defined circumstances and should not be read as blanket rules for credits issued in every situation. Airline-specific examples reflect American Airlines’ published Flight Credit terms and Southwest Airlines’ current “About Flight Credits” support page. Airline policies can change, so check the current terms from the issuing airline and the details attached to your credit before acting.
