How AI Server Demand Affects Data Center Power and Cooling Needs

AI servers increase data-center electricity demand and concentrate more heat in dense racks, while cooling’s energy share varies widely by facility.

AI server demand raises data centers’ electricity needs and concentrates more power—and heat—in each rack. The cooling challenge grows with that heat, but cooling does not consume a fixed share of server electricity: the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates cooling and environmental control account for about 7% of electricity use in efficient hyperscale facilities and more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise data centers. These are facility-level ranges, not a universal rule.

How AI server demand increases electricity use

Servers are the largest electricity-consuming component in modern data centers. The IEA estimated that they used about 60% of data-center electricity on average in 2025, with the share varying by facility type. As AI adoption grows, operators are adding high-performance accelerated servers, including GPUs, which can draw substantially more power in a given rack footprint than less-dense equipment. IEA: Energy demand from AI

Recent growth illustrates the scale of the change. The IEA reported that data-center electricity demand rose 17% in 2025, while electricity use by AI-focused data centers rose 50%. Its central outlook estimates total data-center consumption at roughly 485 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 and 950 TWh in 2030—around 3% of global electricity demand by 2030. Those are global estimates and a scenario-based forecast, not a guarantee about future consumption or a measure of any one facility’s needs. IEA: Key Questions on Energy and AI

Why denser AI racks raise the cooling challenge

AI changes not only how much equipment data centers install, but also how much power—and therefore heat—is concentrated in a smaller space. The IEA says AI server power density increased 11-fold from 2020 to 2025 and is projected to rise a further fourfold by 2027. It compares a possible advanced rack’s peak power demand in 2027 to the power used by 65 households. That is a comparison of peak power, not annual energy use, and should not be read as a typical rack specification. IEA: Key Questions on Energy and AI

  • Model: DV4600-492
  • Bearing Type: Ball; Fan Diameter: 120mm; Maximum Fan Speed: 2650/3100 RPM; Material: Plastic; Type: Axial cooling fan
  • Packaging: Carton; Power Connection: 2-Pin; Voltage: 115VAC
  • Fan size: 120*120*38MM

Nearly all electricity consumed by computing equipment ultimately becomes heat that a facility must remove. Higher rack power therefore increases the heat-removal challenge. It does not mean cooling electricity rises one-for-one with server electricity: the cooling system’s energy use depends on design, climate, equipment utilization, and overall facility efficiency.

Why cooling electricity varies by facility

The IEA’s estimated cooling and environmental-control share ranges from about 7% of electricity use in efficient hyperscale data centers to more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities. The figures describe different facility types and efficiencies, rather than a single benchmark applicable to every site. IEA: Energy demand from AI

For an operator or investor assessing a facility, the useful questions are whether its cooling system can handle planned rack density and how its electricity use fits the site’s efficiency and power constraints. The global figures do not establish which cooling technology is best for a particular building, nor do they provide a head-to-head comparison of air, direct-liquid, or immersion cooling.

Annual electricity and reliable power are different planning problems

Annual energy consumption, instantaneous power capacity, backup and redundancy, and access to a local grid connection are related but distinct requirements. AI training and model use can create large, rapid swings in power demand. The IEA says energy storage can help ensure reliable electricity supply as those loads fluctuate. It also reports bottlenecks in equipment supply, grid connections, and approvals, which can constrain data-center buildout even where demand is rising. The IEA’s global outlook cannot determine whether a specific region has sufficient grid capacity, what cooling design an individual data center requires, or how much water it will use. Those questions require site-specific information rather than a global demand projection.
