PocketGuard’s available-to-spend figure is an estimate, not a guaranteed cash balance. In the current PocketGuard help documentation, the figure is called Leftover. It represents what the app calculates should remain after planned income is offset by expenses and goals. Its usefulness depends on whether your accounts, transactions, recurring items and budget choices are complete and correctly classified.
PocketGuard does not publish an independent accuracy percentage, error rate or audit for Leftover. Therefore, there is no evidence-based answer such as “it is 95% accurate.” The practical question is whether your PocketGuard plan reflects your actual financial situation closely enough for the number to guide spending.

What PocketGuard’s Leftover number actually measures
PocketGuard describes Leftover as the amount you can safely spend or save after accounting for the items in your plan. Its documented formula is:
Recommended Free Tools
Income − Expenses − Goals = Leftover
The Dashboard Plan card uses estimated and actual income received, then subtracts actual and planned expenses. Those expenses can include recurring bills, category budgets and debt-payoff plans. Goal contributions may be displayed separately, but they are part of the planning picture that can reduce what remains.

Leftover resets at the beginning of each month. You can view it on the Dashboard Plan card and in the Plan tab. It is therefore a monthly planning residual, rather than a live statement that identifies exactly how many dollars are uncommitted in your bank accounts at this instant.
PocketGuard’s illustrative calculation
PocketGuard’s Help Center gives an example using $3,000 of income, $500 in budgets and $1,000 in bills:
| Plan item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Income | $3,000 |
| Budgets | −$500 |
| Bills | −$1,000 |
| Leftover | $1,500 |
This demonstrates the arithmetic only. It is not a performance test, a measured error margin or proof that the app’s inputs match any particular user’s bank account. The Help Center article containing the example was last updated August 31, 2026.
So, how accurate is it?
Leftover can be a useful estimate when the plan is complete and transactions are categorized correctly. It cannot be assigned a supported accuracy score from PocketGuard’s published documentation. The company does not provide an independently measured percentage, sample size, error rate or audit showing how closely Leftover tracks users’ spendable cash.

That distinction matters because the formula itself is straightforward; the uncertainty comes from the inputs and from decisions about what counts toward the plan. A mathematically correct subtraction can still produce a misleading result if an account is missing, a paycheck is estimated incorrectly, a bill has changed, a transaction is pending or a purchase is assigned to the wrong category.
Why Leftover can differ from the money you think you can spend
Missing or incomplete accounts
PocketGuard advises connecting all checking and credit accounts relevant to the budget. If an account is omitted, spending or income in that account will not be represented in the same way as activity in connected accounts. Cash spending can also fall outside automatic bank feeds. PocketGuard’s guide describes manual tracking through cash accounts as an option when cash activity is part of your plan.
Incorrect recurring income or bills
The app can detect recurring income and bills, but a detected amount or date may not match what you actually receive or pay. A changed salary, variable paycheck, cancelled subscription, annual bill or one-time obligation can leave the plan out of date. Compare the entries used for the current month with the amounts you expect to arrive and leave your accounts.
Transaction categorization errors
PocketGuard explicitly says that its automatic system sometimes identifies a merchant or category incorrectly. A restaurant purchase assigned to groceries, for example, can distort both a category budget and the remaining plan amount. PocketGuard recommends reviewing transactions, including pending transactions, editing incorrect assignments and creating a transaction rule when appropriate so future activity is handled consistently.

Transfers and exclusions
PocketGuard says transfers between accounts are excluded by default to prevent the same money from being counted twice. You can change whether a transaction is counted. That setting matters when a transfer represents a genuine spending event, a debt payment or money moved for a goal rather than a simple movement between your own accounts.
Transactions can also be marked “Don’t count.” Excluding an item may be correct, but it changes the calculation. Before relying on the headline amount, inspect why excluded transactions and transfers are absent.
Timing of pending and posted transactions
A pending card transaction may not yet appear in the same state as a posted transaction. If you make a purchase near the end of a month, or if a merchant changes the final amount, the plan can temporarily show a different result from your own expectation. Reviewing pending items is part of PocketGuard’s recommended checking process.
One-time expenses and spending from savings
Leftover can become negative when planned expenses exceed income. PocketGuard also notes that a negative result can follow a large one-time expense or spending from savings. A negative number alone does not establish that the app is defective; it may be accurately reflecting the items currently included in the plan.

How to verify your own Leftover figure
The following reconciliation checks the inputs behind the estimate. It is a practical method based on PocketGuard’s documented controls, not an independent accuracy test of the app.
- Open the Plan breakdown. Confirm that every checking and credit account relevant to this month is connected. If you use cash, add the cash activity or account needed to represent it.
- Audit income. Compare the income shown for the month with income actually received and income you reasonably expect to receive. Check each recurring-income entry for amount, frequency and timing.
- Audit bills and planned expenses. Review recurring bills, category budgets, debt payments and any one-time items. Remove cancelled obligations and add upcoming expenses that the app did not detect.
- Review transactions. Inspect posted and pending transactions. Correct merchant or category mistakes and add a rule for recurring misclassifications where that option is available.
- Inspect goals. Compare goal contributions with the amount you intend to set aside this month. A contribution included in the plan reduces what the calculation treats as available for other purposes.
- Check transfers and “Don’t count” settings. Confirm that excluded transfers are genuinely internal movements and that any transaction marked “Don’t count” should be omitted from the plan.
- Reconcile against reality. Compare the resulting estimate with current account balances, pending charges and known obligations. If they differ, trace the discrepancy to an account, transaction, planned item or classification instead of treating the headline number as settled cash.
What a positive or negative number means
A positive Leftover
A positive value means the current plan leaves that amount after the income, expenses and goals entered or detected by PocketGuard. It does not mean every dollar of that amount is immediately spendable. A pending purchase, an unentered cash expense, an incomplete account connection or an upcoming bill outside the plan can reduce what is truly available.
A negative Leftover
A negative value means the plan’s deductions exceed the income represented for the month. Common explanations include an unusually large bill, spending from savings, a debt payment, an over-budget category or income that has not yet been entered. Check the plan items first; do not assume a negative result proves a synchronization error.

| Feature | What it measures | Main inputs | Best question it answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leftover | Current monthly residual after planned income, expenses and goals | Connected-account data, detected income and bills, budgets, debt plans, goals and tracked transactions | How much does my current plan leave after its listed deductions? |
| Pace | Progress against a monthly spending plan | Budgets, bills, goals, debt-payoff plans, typical spending patterns and actual behavior over the previous six months | Am I spending faster or slower than my plan expects? |
PocketGuard says the Pace chart can show a day-by-day category comparison. That makes Pace a progress and spending-rate view, while Leftover is the plan-based amount remaining. Neither description supplies an independently validated accuracy percentage for the other.
When should you trust the number?
Use Leftover as a planning signal when you have recently checked the underlying data and your finances are relatively predictable. Confidence is stronger when:
- all relevant checking and credit accounts are connected;
- cash spending is recorded;
- income and recurring bills match current amounts;
- pending and posted transactions have been reviewed;
- category assignments are correct;
- budgets, debt payments and goals reflect your actual intentions; and
- transfers and excluded transactions have an understood reason.
Use more caution when income is irregular, bills change frequently, you use several unconnected accounts, you make substantial cash purchases or you are recovering from a large one-time expense. In those situations, maintain a separate check of account balances and upcoming obligations rather than relying on Leftover alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat PocketGuard’s documentation establishes—and what it does not
PocketGuard establishes the definition, formula and controls behind Leftover. It also acknowledges that automatic merchant or category identification can be wrong and explains how users can correct transactions. Those statements support treating the number as dependent on data quality and user setup.
The documentation does not establish how often categorization errors occur, how quickly every account updates, or how close Leftover is to users’ actual discretionary cash across a tested population. Without that evidence, a precise accuracy claim would be unwarranted.
Bottom line for budgeting decisions
PocketGuard’s available-to-spend number—currently labeled Leftover—is best understood as a monthly, plan-based estimate. It applies the formula income minus expenses minus goals to the information in your connected accounts and budget setup. It may be highly useful for organizing a plan, but it is not an independently verified cash-balance guarantee.
Before spending the amount shown, reconcile the Plan breakdown with your accounts, income, bills, transactions, transfers, goals and pending obligations. If those inputs are accurate, Leftover can be a reasonable guide. If they are incomplete or misclassified, the number can be wrong even though the arithmetic is correct.
