That can put upward pressure on the cost of imported electronics and components in India—but it does not mean every device’s retail price rises immediately or by the same percentage. Customs valuation, duties, freight, inventory, sourcing and pricing decisions all affect what shoppers ultimately pay.
How rupee depreciation reaches an electronics price
When an import is priced in a foreign currency, a buyer needs more rupees to pay the same invoice after the rupee weakens. For example, a hypothetical invoice of 100 foreign-currency units converts to ₹8,000 at ₹80 per unit and ₹8,500 at ₹85 per unit. This is simple arithmetic, not a market quote or a prediction of a shelf price; it excludes freight, insurance, duties and commercial adjustments.
Indian customs valuation adds another important step. Under Section 14 of the Customs Act, the import transaction value can include specified transport, insurance, loading, unloading, handling and other costs. The conversion uses the exchange rate in force on the date the bill of entry is presented. That date need not match the day a retailer sets a list price or a shopper buys the product.
After customs valuation, the rupee’s effect on a device depends on how it is made and bought: it may arrive as a finished import, or be assembled in India using imported components. Contract currency and timing, hedging, inventory, applicable tariff treatment and the pricing choices of importers, brands, distributors and retailers can also shape the outcome. These factors explain why currency movement does not translate mechanically into a matching change at the checkout.

Why the retail-price effect is not automatic
In a written answer to Rajya Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1998 on 10 March 2026, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said on behalf of the Ministry of Finance: “While a depreciation in rupee and rise in the prices of raw materials in the global market can put an upward pressure on input costs in certain sectors, the final effect depends upon a host of factors including the extent of the pass-through of international commodity prices to the domestic market, availability of substitute input goods, measures to contain inflationary pressures and volatility in the exchange rate movements.” The same distinction applies here: a higher rupee cost for a foreign-currency invoice is a cost pressure, not proof of a particular consumer-price change.
Companies may absorb some cost changes, adjust prices at different times, or be affected by other costs and policies moving in the opposite direction. The available evidence does not establish a current, electronics-specific percentage increase or a dependable lag between rupee depreciation and retail price changes in India. It is therefore not sound to claim that a particular fall in the rupee has raised every imported device’s price by a stated amount without dated, product-specific evidence.

Electronics duties vary by product
Tariff changes can add to or offset currency-related pressure, but a change for one category should not be applied to all electronics. NITI Aayog’s Trade Watch Quarterly: July–September (Q2) FY 2025–26, published in February 2026, reports that the 2025–26 budget raised basic customs duty on interactive flat panel displays from 10% to 20% and reduced duty on open-cell panels and related display components to 5%. The report also describes the 2024–25 budget reduction of basic customs duty on mobile phones, mobile PCBA and chargers to 15%.
Those are category-specific policy examples, not a universal electronics duty schedule. The applicable rate for a particular product depends on its customs classification and the current rules. NITI Aayog also describes the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme as an effort to increase domestic value addition and reduce import dependence for selected components. That policy context does not mean domestic assembly eliminates imported content or currency exposure.

What to check when comparing devices
A broad label such as “imported electronics” is not enough to predict which product is more exposed to a weaker rupee. For a meaningful comparison, look for evidence on each of these points:
- Import structure: Is the finished product imported, or is it assembled domestically from imported components?
- Currency exposure: What currency is used on the invoice, and when is conversion documented?
- Tariff treatment: What is the exact customs classification and applicable current duty, rather than a general electronics rate?
- Retail-price evidence: Is there a dated, documented list- or retail-price change in India, rather than an assumed pass-through?
Current product-by-product evidence for these comparison points is not established by the sources cited here. The Department of Commerce’s TradeStat import database provides commodity and country views and reports import data through FY 2025–26, with a last update dated 7 August 2026; it can be used to investigate import exposure, but no specific electronics import total is cited here.

How to interpret claims about price increases
The Reserve Bank of India’s study, Import Price Pass-through to Domestic Prices in India, explains the relevant two-stage framework: exchange rates and foreign prices affect import prices, and import-price movements can then affect domestic prices. Its numerical analysis is historical, including data from decades ending in 2007–08, so it is useful for the mechanism rather than as a current estimate for Indian electronics.
When assessing a claim that a weaker rupee has made a device more expensive, distinguish the customs valuation from the retail price and ask whether the claim identifies the product, dates, tariff classification and actual price evidence. Without those details, the exchange-rate move supports a possibility of cost pressure, not a precise conclusion about what shoppers now pay.
