When the U.S. dollar strengthens against the euro, each dollar buys more euros. If a trip’s euro prices stay the same, those expenses generally cost fewer dollars—but the exchange rate is only one part of what you pay. Card or ATM conversion rates, fees, and the prices of hotels, meals, and transport can change the final bill.
What a stronger dollar means for your trip
“A stronger dollar” is a comparison over time: one U.S. dollar buys more euros than it did before. The reverse is also true: when the dollar weakens against the euro, a fixed euro-denominated expense generally costs more dollars.
This effect applies to expenses priced in euros. It does not mean every destination in Europe uses the euro, or that local prices will stay fixed while exchange rates move.
How to convert a euro travel budget into dollars
First check how the rate is quoted. The European Central Bank (ECB) quotes currencies against the euro. Its reference rate for 6 October 2026 was EUR 1 = USD 1.1269—about $1.13 for each euro. To estimate dollars from a euro price, multiply:

Dollar cost = euro price × dollars per euro
At that dated reference rate, a €1,000 expense works out to about $1,126.90 before any provider charges. The reciprocal is about €0.8874 per dollar, but that is a different quote direction. If a rate is shown as dollars per euro, multiply the euro price; do not divide by that quote.
How the exchange-rate move changes the same bill
For illustration only, suppose the rate moves from $1.13 per euro to $1.08 per euro. A fixed €1,000 bill would go from $1,130 to $1,080 before fees. This hypothetical example shows the arithmetic, not a forecast or a claim about a particular recent move.

What the dated rates show—and what they do not
Federal Reserve H.10 observations put the rate at EUR 1 = USD 1.1403 on 26 June 2026 and EUR 1 = USD 1.1259 on 2 October 2026. Comparing those two observations, the dollar bought fewer euros in early October than in late June: it had weakened against the euro over those dates, not strengthened. Rates are dated snapshots; this comparison does not predict the rate on a future booking or travel date.
Always retain both the date and the quote direction when comparing rates. The same currency pair can be expressed as dollars per euro or euros per dollar, and the figures are reciprocals rather than interchangeable numbers.

Why your card or ATM charge can differ from a reference rate
The ECB says its reference rates are generally updated around 16:00 Central European Time on working days, based on a daily concertation among central banks that normally takes place around 14:10 CET. They are published for information, and the ECB says using them for transactions is strongly discouraged. A reference rate is therefore a benchmark for an estimate, not a promised checkout or ATM rate.
Your card issuer, bank, ATM operator, cash-exchange counter, or transfer provider may use a different conversion rate, add a spread, or charge a separate fee. The ECB currency converter uses ECB reference-rate and Bloomberg exchange-rate datasets, with ECB rates prevailing in its conversion logic; it is useful for a dated benchmark, not a transaction quote.

To compare payment options, look at the total dollar charge for the same euro amount, including any separately listed charges. A headline exchange rate alone does not reveal the full cost. Current fee schedules and provider rankings are not established by the cited official rate sources, so there is no basis here to name a cheapest card, ATM, or exchange provider.

- List the euro-priced expenses. Use the actual euro amounts for lodging, meals, transport, and other planned purchases.
- Choose a dated benchmark rate. Record whether it is USD per EUR or EUR per USD. For USD per EUR, multiply each euro amount by the rate.
- Keep the estimate separate from payment costs. Treat the benchmark conversion as an estimate, then account for the rate and fees your payment provider actually applies.
- Recheck close to payment. Exchange rates move, so a rate used for planning may differ from the one applied when a booking or card transaction is processed.
A stronger dollar can make the same euro-priced trip cheaper in dollar terms, but it cannot by itself tell you what your total trip will cost. That depends on the euro prices you face and the conversion rate and charges applied to each payment.
