Yap said the experience sharpened her wish to be safer and more present for her children; the profile later connected her real-estate career with high-profile recognition and a family fondness for Ferraris.
The robbery that prompted a change
PerthNow published its profile of Yap on 27 February 2020. It portrayed her as a pharmacist who had been “shy, quiet and very timid” before her career transition. The article recounts that several pharmacists were held at gunpoint during a robbery, and attributes the account and its significance to Yap.
“I had a moment, like a realisation, that it was my time to take charge … and I think at that time, I needed a change in my life,” she said.
Yap connected that realization to motherhood: “I think the realisation came when a few of my pharmacists were held at gunpoint in a robbery, so it sort of made me think, ‘oh my god, I’m a mum — I don’t want to lose sight of my children and I definitely need to see my kids’.”

The profile also described the pressures of pharmacy security: guards walking her to her car, break-ins, repairs, and encounters with thieves. Yap said, “It made me think, I don’t really want to deal with 3am in the morning, getting glaziers to fix my windows and the doors of the pharmacy, and having fights or catching thieves stealing in my pharmacy.” She added that martial arts would not have been enough against someone carrying “a syringe, or a gun or a knife.”
From a quiet pharmacist to real estate
The profile frames the robbery not as a complete explanation of Yap’s career, but as a catalyst for a decision she associated with taking charge of her life and making more time for her children. Its contrast is between her earlier self-description as shy and timid and the confidence needed to build a public-facing real-estate career.
